This was awesome. I am 14 and homesteading/farming is my dream. I really want to do this stuff I plan to move to Canada and start my new live when I'm older. I live in the city of philly now but i am working to reach my dream of homesteading and owning animals and birds. When I get the farm I also want to record it and post it on KZbin. I hope people can learn of what I do in the future.

My wife and I retired to the country. Starting small and cutting yourself some slack is key to moving forward. It took us at least a year to adjust to the slower lifestyle and be comfortable with it. The key is not to give up, learn from your set backs and press on. It's about the journey not the destination. It is well worth it.

I was born & raised in the SW part of VA & although life has taken me a different direction, I still love to listen to the sounds of the farm, animals and insects, breeze flowing through the trees and fields - no planes, trains, automobiles, or music from your neighbors. So peaceful. I love watching your videos. Take care.

I love your down to earth manner. I've been a suburban backyard homesteader for decades and live a semi off the grid lifestyle for about five years. With all that experience I feel comfortable about taking the plunge to homestead off the grid. There are somethings I jump in with both feet but mainly I'm a dip-the-toes in first kind of gal. Knowledge both experience and book learning are key to any successful venture. Be aware and be prepared.

Hello from the tiny mountain homestead in Bulgaria. I am so greatful that you took the time to explain all this to us. I started out with 3 garden patches 2 dogs and 3 cats. Then came my first meat and compost rabbit . Now i am getting 2 goats and then come the chickens and rooster. your advice is awesome. Thank you again! Blessings to you my dear. I wish I had good neighbors like you.

When we moved to the country, we had the most friendly & wonderful neighbors who taught us a lot. It was nice having my parents who built next door too. Dad grew up during the Great Depression and my mom who is now 90 grew up in Spain in the mountains during the Spanish Civil War. She knows everything about living off the land, raising food, animals, etc...We would all help each other out when needed. It was a lot of fun while we lived there.

We are wanting to be self sufficient as much as possible, to know where our food comes from, knowing the meat is from happy healthy animals, and just getting back to basics. We have watched so many channels and we always come back to yours. Thankyou for making them and keeping them real and true, not sugar coated.

thank you. that was a real inspiration. it's daunting when looking at it as a whole rather than a step-by-step process for someone like me who has not homesteaded but knows that is where life has pointed them. i've gardened and had cats and dogs. i have worked all my adult life in food service, cleaning and maintenance but find myself physically disabled at 55. my debts are paid off and i have a nest egg to get me started without a mortgage. i've been downsizing and am starting to look for property. i know that this is the way to get my health back and regain control of my finances and freedom. and this is my legacy to my sons as well, because there just aren't the same opportunities available to them that i've had. my physical abilities and skills are limited but im determined to do this. i know it will be easier with the help of people like you who are so generously sharing their time and knowledge.

Thanks Patara. Some important points you made - ...being prepared on a homestead means LOTS of things. It also seems that being prepared to undertake homesteading means LOTs of things too. Seems one of the biggest causes of failure in homesteading is about making wrong decisions up front regarding how to transition and what to transition into. People too often just follow others and fail to ask themselves important questions assessing themselves and their situation. We're in the midst of a how to homestead series on 4 DECISION PHASES, just getting to the details and questions in Episode 3. The core is that one has to KNOW THEMSELVES and THEIR SITUATION, and from there learning, and planning phases come in. Ya just got me cranked up!! Anyway - really enjoy your vids, and I sure think your videos have likely helped many 'steaders!

My wife just sent me this and I couldn't agree more with you 110%💕 as a commercial Carpenter certified in green construction AKA solar panels wind and hydro I will tell you she's 100% right wood is the most reliable for heat and just cooking in general... And if you do not know how to do major repairs on your outbuildings fencing home etc you should go get certified and something like a trade as carpentry, welding etc even one of these things learning how to do then you can a strange trades for I'll fix your roof or all weld something and you can fix my engine on the car

Good tips. We live on 5 acres that was told to us this area would be sold in 5-10 acre plots. We put in a pond, fencing, etc. (Spent a lot of money so we have it all invested but at least we are almost debt free) It was great for several years. HOWEVER we never expected that 1 plot would not sell so it was broken down. We now have 2 trailers with 'questionable' behavior and we see police cars there about once a month. Then the 5 on the other side decided to put 5 rent trailers on theirs. That just never occurred to us that they would or could do that. So we are kind of stuck. If we could pick up our place and move it elsewhere we would but right now it's just not in the budget. We have thought about putting it up for sale but now the location is just not desirable. Hopefully one day. Just something else to keep in mind.

fzfamilyhomestead Where did you originally purchase you home at, that changed so? Hope it has calmed down and is better? Does the neighboring land ownets have permits fir all those living/ rental trailers? Did they do perk tests and get permits for septic systems on them? Did the have the well water certified and tested for drinkability... legally through county jurisdiction?

Hello: If I had got the farm I bid on this spring I was going to put a Pioneer Princess Wood Cook stove in the basement. It would heat the house, cook and heat water. I think I like the Flame View Cook stove better. When Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989 due to where I live I was out of power 6 hours. I live between 2 major truck stops so power is never out long. But people I know that lives on the lake was out of power 7 days. Some of them moved in with family or friends that had Electricity.

I am very happy that she said safety. There really are some odd people that live out in the country, trust me, I have seen them when I live out there. Trust me, you do need a wood stove. It will heat the house and will cook your food at the same time. We did loose our electric in the winter time and used the wood heater all the time. Learn to can and build you stock yard. You should have atleast, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but you should have 6 month of food storage. OMG, at 8:30, I just about died. I used to work at Weigles. Know you neighbors, she is very right about that. You may just need help one day from them and if you don't know them, why would they do anything for you? We did the bardering system and it works. Our neighbor would use our barn to dry his tobacco and would plow the garden for us. One hand washes the other. She is very right. get your kids involved. If you get them involved, you will teach them some very valuable tips. I know that most of you are thinking way? Well, if we go into a depression, again, your kids will know that things they need and the ones that don't, they will die.

+Katherine Taylor I live in a small town and hoping to get a homestead very soon. Learn to garden, planting from seed. It's just wonderful to see plants that you planted growing from a seed. If you don't sew, learn how. There is much you can do with this skill. You can make extra money if you want, and also save a lot. I just finished shortening about 15 pairs of jeans that were given to me, all in nice condition. Learn to fix thing with you own two hands. Hope this helps a little.

This information is so helpful! Quick question, we're curious how to get to know neighbors when all properties around are gated and far apart. We would love to meet the neighbors, but never see them, and don't want to trespass to introduce ourselves. Any advice for new-to-the-country folks?
@franniefargo9454

as for meeting neighbors the best place to be would be working in a school and joining a church, next working as a waitress in a restaurant or working in a store someplace close to where you live. the school and church thing worked for me. met scads of children who recognized me at church or in the stores. the children were usually accompanied by their parents and the child would proudly introduce me. met a lot of new friends that way.

I want to do this, but neither my husband or I would ever be able to butcher or eat our animals... so I think I would grow our food, have chickens for eggs, maybe a cow for milk... but I would have to keep buying our meat. I would love it if you could talk about that a little bit. Because I really worry about it.
@Apathymiller
@Apathymiller 7 жыл бұрын
MsChannigan not everyone can take an animals life. im 39 years old and i still remember taking my 1st deer when i was 10 years old, butchering it and not wanting to eat it. it was tramatic for me. Im still an avid hunter for some of our meat. its never a fun thing to have to take a life, but you have to if you want to eat meat. whether you actually do it yourself or if youre picking up a pack of meat in a Styrofoam container a life has been taken in order for you to eat it. wouldnt you rather have an animal that has been feeding in the wild or an animal you controlled what they ate and how it was raised? It never gets "easy", but its something you learn to do if you want to control what youre eating.

About the meat questions, i read or heard that other people who homestead are willing to do trades, like they will give you deer meat and you give them jams,vegetables examples like that. Does that work?
