There is an app you can download on your phone. It is called parking mobility and if you follow the directions you can actually report handicapped parking violators and they receive a ticket in the mail.

Thank you for your work patrolling the parking lots in Spokane! It's so frustrating when people use other people's disabled parking passes or park on the lines between disabled parking spots. We are always looking for a parking space with enough room next to it for the wheelchair ramp and the extra room necessary to maneuver my chair at the end of it. Even most disabled spots don't work unless they have those lines next to them.

Growing up I knew a kid who was in a wheelchair. He was with his mom at the PX and someone had a Mercedes parked diagonally across two spots. His mom had to drop him off at the curb. While she went to park in a regular spot he wheeled himself to the Mercedes and he yanked the Hood ornament.

A bunch of cyclists parked their bikes in the last disabled spot at a garden centre and chained them to a post so they couldn't be moved. When they came out forty minutes later they found every singe tyre was flat. After trying to pump them up they realised that they had been punctured. (I wonder what the cost of replacing 16 tyres was?) Surprisingly nobody saw anything, all they got was "well you shouldn't have parked there !"

Once I saw a lady park in a handicapped spot and no sticker or placard. I confronted her and she tried the 'just for a minute' excuse. I told her that wouldn't do, and that if she didn't move I would block her in and call the cops. Quite a crowd had formed by then. She actually cried and asked why I was being so mean. People started saying "you can walk without trouble", "my grandma is disabled", " it's against the law!" I'm not proud but I think if regular people made it their business it would help. Places where selfishness and inconsiderate behavior is not socially acceptable are better places.

I WORK AS A PARKING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN DENVER. Yes, I'm one of those that tickets people for not feeding the meters. But I also cite people for misusing those handicap placards. I've heard every sob story and excuse in the book. "I only went into the Walmart for a minute". Ok, it'll only take me a minute to write you up. "But this is my grandmother's car. She didn't remove the placard" Placard or no, you have no right to use a handicap space dummy! "But I had to use the space. I'm in a huge hurry!" Well, you're going to be a few minutes late now. You could have saved time if you used a regular space! "But I didn't see the handicap marking on the pavement because it's covered with snow". There's a vertical sign also there that clearly marks this as a handicap space. Open your eyes! Perhaps the worst excuse I heard was the day after Trump was elected. A 20 something woman started crying, said "I'm sorry. I've been so upset about the election, I didn't have the strength to walk all the way from the regular spaces". My response: "Too bad snowflake". Handicap space violations carry a $420 fine. I don't have sympathy for selfish able bodied people using them. Hopefully this stiff fine will teach you a lesson!

I imagine you're obese from your name, job, and avatar. People shouldn't park in handicap spots and they should be jailed for 24 hours for doing so. A simple fine isn't enough. But handicap spots are also out of control in some areas, and nonexistent in others. Why does homedepot need 20 handicap spaces? What happens when their parking lot is full to the brim and not a single handicap space is in use? Why should a handicapped person be given a defacto personal parking space everywhere, despite normal people often not having a single legal place to park? The current handicap system is a problem, and the current mind set of the abled is also a problem. In my experience in Denver, women and negros tend to be the people abusing the handicapped spaces. Two "Victim" classes. The system is imperfect, and I don't have a solution. But pretending that there is never a reason for someone to park in a disabled spot is blind to the realities of the world.

I am physically disabled. I'm Canadian. The maximum fine is $5,000. But somehow people in general think they can use the parking spots designated for people with disabilities for a couple of minutes or they think they can just park there and sit in the car and wait. Of course they're not allowed to but they think they're above the law. I was in the strip ball ones I parked my vehicle no problem a police officer was giving tickets out he checked my wheelchair permit and I asked him why he says because people misuse these permits quite often he says wait till this guy gets back to me he said he went to go pick up his disabled mother this man will be getting the full fine because his mother was deceased and was not available

Carl, if I remember correctly, some places have 2 separate offenses relating to wrongfully parking in disabled parking spots. The first is simply parking in the disabled parking spot when you're not disabled. And the second is something like fraudulent use of a disabled parking placard. Last I heard, each offense was for around $900 in San Francisco, so if you get nailed for both offenses, you're looking at about $1800 in fines.

Finally! A city that gets it! I approached the Student Resource Officer at my son’s school about people illegally parking in disabled spots. I asked if I could take photos of the offending people and their vehicles. He said no because there’s nothing he could do unless he saw it for himself. He continued to say it just a misdemeanor. Really? Just a misdemeanor? The fine is supposed to act as a deterrent, unfortunately, I don’t believe that it’s working. In my opinion what needs to change is the law making it a felony to park in a disabled spot and allow citizens to capture proof and report to police.

Wish we had more enforcement officers here in the U.K. and higher instant fines. I have a steel and 4mm acrylic, blue badge holder which locks onto the steering wheel with a steel, plastic coated cable and high security lock. It’s police approved. Stolen badges go for up to £500. It’s a good deterrent.

My mobility scooter comes out the back of my car, but I need the extra side space to open the door fully in order to get in & out. Not all spaces afford that extra room. A few local ones only give it on one side meaning I have to park facing the wrong way so that the ramp blocks the 'road'.

My nephew was crossing train tracks and was dragged by a passing train. He lost his left arm and leg and qualifies for a handicap placard. However, her refuses to use it because say's he's not handicapped. Just missing an arm and a leg. Now 31 years old today, he stands (on one leg) at 6ft 1". Lucky to be alive and full of spirit.

In Southern Calif, I see a lot of very expensive low profile sports cars, Mercedes, Lexus, Corvettes, BMW, parked in these spots. Usually doctors or family/friends of doctors who get them to write whatever notes are necessary to get a placard.

I have the same concerns that this gentleman has but I am quite a few years older. Over the years I have used techniquesnakes such as parking further away at the end of a row so I can't be blocked. I also have parked next to posts which sometimes works. If you don't need to be up front and close try other methods. Even a regular space might work if you park along the line on your right and that will increase your space on the driver's side. I drive a Tudor Monte Carlo and pull my wheelchair out of the back seat. I am a quadriplegic and it took a long time to figure this out but it works.

Before back surgery a few years ago, my wife had a disabled hang tag. She needed a close space, but not one with room for a wheelchair. Maybe we need two types of handicapped designations. One with a Wheelchair logo and the other with crossed crutches for those who can walk, but not far.

At the Walmart and other places with big parking lots most of the cars in the handicap spaces are parked half in the space and half in the crosshatch, or parked diagonally. I don't think there's any such thing as parking enforcement in South Jersey, except maybe in the cities. I don't know.

Must tell this story,after a men’s league basketball game we all went foe a beer,a friend of mine drives a sport car he parked in a handicap spot we all told he should not park there,he did .when we came out all four tires were flat,no air no harm to them.he had to call a tow truck for air,as air was being put back a police man happened by.say no more big fine and a breath test,he got home very late.

I think there should be a number that any disabled person can call if someone is illegally parked in a disabled 🅿️ spot. It could connect to the police and a tow company with a contract. Maybe a number like, TOW- 869, or something easy to remember like 111.

I see this constantly and have recently caught a postal worker parking in the crosshatch area. I admit I never knew what that was for until I myself became disabled. I never parked there and even when transporting my disabled parents I would park in a regular spot after dropping them off. Now i try and inform as many as i can on how important it is not to take a handicapped spot if your not disabled and not to park in the crosshatch

I sat near a chic-fil-a waiting for my daughter and watched 6 cars park in the 2 handicapped spots in front of the store to run in and grab their to-go orders. The parking for to-go is directly across the parking lot, maybe 50 ft away. The major were young adults, late teens/early 20s. Absolutely dismal to watch. No thought to anyone else.

On a similar note , I carry around a tubeless tire valve stem and a Shrader valve remover ( available cheap at many auto parts stores ) Yes, I'm permanently disabled . The easiest thing to do is not even vandalism because nothing gets destroyed like the bicycle tire incident below. You quickly go to one side of the vehicle violating the handicapped spot and you use your tool to remove the Shrader valve that instantly deflates the tire and go to the diagonally opposite tire and deflate it too. Then the fun really begins. FIRST, you lay the removed Shrader valve right next to each tire so no charge of any kind can result in your arrest, Air is free, right? You call 911 and say that my handicapped spot is occupied by a violator and please send out a patrol car immediately. By this time the owner of this vehicle knows he/she/it has to call a tow truck to move the vehicle ASAP. a cop arrives and hiding a grin, writes that $400 ticket. That tow truck driver arrives at that point and can add a special surcharge for " rescuing a vehicle " from the handicapped spot. I'll bet that person never parks in another handicapped spot again...

I never ever place my car on a disabled parking slot. I rather walk a lot than doing that. Why I do this? My father is in a chair. I know how much people struggle with this problem. There are many, many, many architectural barriers that makes the life of a handicapped a painful torture. This HAS to change.

I don't ever park in handicap spots but the other day during a blizzard I did park in the drive thru! It was snowing hard and I couldn't see!!!

The three most common excuses: 1). I was in a hurry. 2). There was nowhere else to park. 3). I'm only going to be a minute. None of those entitles you to use that space. You're lucky you don't need it. But you might, one day: 85% of Americans will become disabled at some point, either permanently or temporarily. There are only two situations in which a police officer can cite you on private property, without permission of an owner: handicap parking violators, and parking at a fire lane.

As an MSer with a placard, I rather not park in a handicap spot cause I know there are others who need it more. Plus, the longer I struggle to walk the less I will need the placard.

Where do you apply for this job? I'd do it in my spare time for free. I've been around disabled persons my entire life and I always see cars parked illegally in handicap spots, especially here in Vegas. I can only imagine places like Chicago and New York it's even worse. I know I have had encounters in the past with people I've seen just running in to get smokes or supposedly only going to be there for a couple seconds... and actual disabled people would have to park further away or circle around waiting for these people to get back and leave the spot. Put the fear into them, a few 200-500 dollar fines would most definitely stop most of these parking spot pirates from doing it again. Heck, the same can be said for people that park in two to three parking spaces.

I've found that a lot of people use someone else's placard. One man who parked in one wearing a tennis outfit threatened me when I asked if he was disabled. I took a picture of his car and his license plate and went to the police station. He didn't get in trouble for threatening me, but he did get fined for parking in a handicapped spot.

Don't know what your blue disabled cards are like in the USA but in the UK along with the cards reference number there is always a photograph of the disabled person who was issued the card It seems that you don't do that in the USA at least if there was a photograph on your disabled blue cards the police or whatever could see if the person was in the car or not

I had my hip replaced, I sure did like parking in those spots. But once healed, I went back to normalcy. I'd like to see the fines being doubled or tripled. One ticket would make you a believer

Years ago. I picked up my grandfather, got lunch, drove him around for his errands. After, discovered he left his handicap placard. Per law, hung placard when parked, we'd placed in the glove box before driving. The following day I go to pick up my cousin who is excited to have the first outing since having a broken leg and knee surgery, still in a full leg cast. Decides the Library will be a good starter. Narrow long sloped parking lot with no drop off. Cousin doesn't want to chance the distance nor the slope of the available far parking spaces of the lot. The building entrance has it's own distance and slope to deal with. I say wait I have grandfathers Handicap Placard. Placard and space only used for that scenario, without grandfather.

It’s not about educating those offenders. They absolutely know what they are doing is wrong and illegal. In order to stop this action from happening should be easy, hire more people to site tickets and charge more for fines. Minimum of $750.00. Double it for the second offense, three times for the third offense and so on. If the driver is not the person the handicap placard was not given to, then charge that person to. They had to give them the placard. Hit them where it hurts, in their pockets.

I'm handicapped and have a license plate that has the emblem but don't use a handicapped spot unless I'm having a hard time getting around that day.
