Seriously, if the game developers are smart, they will offer to buy this mod from the creators. This is so well done, probably the most well done user friendly mod ive seen. So slip them a fat pile of cash and offer to hire them as well. This mod being in the base game, would be a win for everyone. We had some amazing road tools before in city builders, but this hands down blows them all out of the water and it's not even done yet.
@Xiyng3 ай бұрын
The average player probably doesn't want this kind of complexity (it seems quite intuitive, but it probably looks quite complex to most players), and as you can see from the video, the mod has issues (at least with wide roads), and CO would have to find ways to find ways to fix those issues (if you sell something, higher quality is expected of it). I'd 100% love for this to make its way into the game and think it should be a real consideration, but this is probably not even nearly suitable to put in the base game as-is, even with some finishing touches.
@RMJ19843 ай бұрын
@@Xiyng You could easily make it a toogle under setting. Advanced road control on / off, it doesnt have to replace the current, as we see with the mod.
@Xiyng3 ай бұрын
Yes, that's a part of what makes this not suitable for putting in the base game as-is. That said, I don't imagine CO would be happy with such a solution, so they'd probably try to look for a solution that integrates better in the game, which is even more work (because frankly that's the right approach for most things you want to put in a game). And some of those quirks visible in the video might not be something a modder can easily fix, so that's even more work.
@Swarm5093 ай бұрын
@@Xiyng I expect the base game will get more complex as time goes on though, they did that with CS1 to the point where it was suggested to new players to ignore some DLC as is could get overwhelming. I could see a version of this being added, but much closer to what we have now with basic selectable options instead of this full editor. This is a perfect example of why we have mods, if someone wants the complexity they can find it and try it.
@toddblankenship71643 ай бұрын
why would they waste money when they can just sit back and the modders do the work?
@unclemikeyplays3 ай бұрын
Here's one of the big takeaways, I think: assuming that the Road Builder Mod is ONLY creating new roads from the pieces available and not actually changing any other underlying code...this always would have worked. Colossal Order have done something almost 100% right, because all these modular pieces were just waiting for ways to put them together without needing a separate mod for each road type, and they all just work when you build the networks. We've spent a lot of time criticizing CO the last 9 months since launch. But this? They got this right, and if they didn't include the actual road-builder capability in the base game, they made it possible for one to work!
@LadyLucyna3 ай бұрын
CO got a lot right with the game, they did say the main focus was on future-proofing and enabling modders wherever they can. I've been saying since day 1, the game has massive potential, but CO seemingly spent so much time on the underlying systems that they then couldn't finish the game itself before the launch.
@TypicxlSortOfOdd3 ай бұрын
They couldn't even implement stop signs, yield signs, or stopping for oncoming traffic properly - we don't even talk about lane switching; if this was base and they allowed this to be manipulated in such a way, they could have given us the best road tools ever but they didn't.

My main take-away here is that C.O. is making a game for the masses. I do not think for even a moment that this functionality is wanted by most casual players. They will get overwhelmed and never touch it. That's not something a company can afford to spend its development budget on just for a few crazy people / planners / engineers that like to go for realism.
@deltak54573 ай бұрын
@@Nixy23 That's correct to some extend - one has to keep in mind that the audience for the game is pretty diverse in age, interests and hardware. If you add in all micro management aspects possible menus will get cluttered, tutorials won't find any end and some people which will just casually play will just quit. The most important point however is that the developers support modding to build upon the games foundations and that the game itself is designed from 0 to support such things. The mod previewed is only possible because CO decided to create networks lane based and not segment based like in C:S1 (which they could also have avoided and for most players it still would be fine). As the base is pretty flexible it's possible to extend and alter the gameplay into any direction using mods to make it your own game/simulator.

As an armchair urban planner, this gave me goosebumps. Being a Chicago native, I've always tried to build the rail between the highway in all of my builds, and this will make it so much easier. Such a ground-breaking mod -- literally removes the need for custom road assets since you can make basically anything you want! The UI is so easy, and it looks like everything just works! Not to mention, Paradox built the game in a way to make mods like this possible, so props to them, too. I can't wait to add this to my new build, perfect timing! Thanks for the great overview as always, and I can't wait to give this one a try.

One factor that plays into this is the open nature of the engine they used: Unity. It's not easy to learn, but it does have an opinionated way of organizing code and swapping stuff in and out. By not choosing to build their own custom engine, more people are able to get into the code quickly and start modding instead of hacking their way towards what they want to accomplish.
@Swarm5093 ай бұрын
The official asset tools have not even been released. Maybe this guy had seen them or had access to the beta tools but very possible he made this work without them. @@ThylineTheGay sure, but a custom engine does require learning a bit about the environment you're working in and it might not be familiar right off the bat. I think all the amazing roads that this mod is going to allow is going to necessitate finer control over crosswalks. Also agree on the assets part specifically things like being able to have grass under the tram tacks would be amazing.

This is an absolute game-changer and should be in the base game! They would still have a bunch of standard roads so people didn't need to get this in-depth if they didn't want to, but having this for people who really want to dive deep into customising and detailing is amazing and doesn't require CO to add new road types/combos in the future. I just wish plots could have this sort of flexibility and were more procedurally generated - such as generating a hedgerow or fence around the edge of a plots boundary and spawning house/garage/ garden furniture depending on size and level, etc.

Your Chicago test was one of the first things that popped into mind. For example, on the Dan Ryan and the Ike, the roads pass over the at-grade rail, so that would simplify your handoff to the rail station. Here in Houston, there are commuter trains sharing vehicle travel lanes downtown and through the Texas Medical Center, and on Post Oak Blvd in Uptown, there's a BRT with bendy-busses going down the center of the boulevard. The BRT has some of its own unique signaling along with the commuter trains. On the Hardy Toll Road, there are dual and triple freight rail lines running right down the middle of the toll road just like with Chicago's commuter rail. And like Chicago, the toll road will cross over the at-grade rail lines. It would be interesting to see if this mod could combine with a traffic light mod that would allow you to set separate signaling for each transportation type. Nice mod and demo!

Yep, this mod is a game changer. Completely revolutionizes the means of putting cities together in this game. Roads are one of the most fundamental aspects of planning communities and by removing almost every limit, cities are going to start looking a LOT different in this game pretty soon. Two key takeaways I had from this mod: 1. The modding potential of this game far exceeds cities skylines if we are getting something like this in YEAR 1 of the release. 2. There is something concerning about CO's development studio if a single modder on unpaid time was able to create this in such short order when the actual devs shipped the second game with so little that there are even stuff missing from the first game. I'm obviously not surprised, considering how the launch of this game went, more broadly. But it really makes me wonder exactly what it is that is holding CO back. I don't think it's a lack of passion or desire from the dev team, I would hope. Is it a lack of funding? Do they just not have enough developers on the team? Don't they have Paradox as a publisher? Surely they gave CO a big enough investment to rapidly expand the team due to the success of the first game to make 2 even bigger and better, right? We aren't ever going to get answers to these questions, but one thing is for sure, be it lack of competent leadership, lack of developers, or lack of funding, CO is currently banking HARD on mods just like this one to completely transform this game into a finished, refined product.
@ThaJay3 ай бұрын
A lot of the work CO has done is on the architecture level, making a backbone that is ready for the next generation. This mod even being possible now is a sign of them doing it right. That work takes many hundreds or thousands of hours to get right without any visible improvements. They want to make everything we want possible, while still keeping the vanilla game accessible to casual players. That's why the game does not ship with things like this.
@AyyyGabagool3 ай бұрын
@@ThaJay I get it. I really, really do. Game development, especially for simulation games, is incredibly difficult. But my friend, you are kidding yourself if you believe that CO couldn't have put out a more finished and refined product with a solid publisher like Paradox and many years of development. It's not like they made the launch version of CS2 in 12 months on a skeleton crew. This game was not sold as a "buy now, get content later" Early Access title. This was a fully fledged, major release. To put things into perspective, and I know many people have already forgotten, but this game was supposed to come out in 2020. Yes I know, that sounds crazy. but it's true. If this game came out half -baked in 2023, what could it have possibly looked like back in 2020? Was it even more than a sandbox at that point? What caused the devs to completely miss the mark by 3 whole years? Well the truth is that these are all obvious signs of deficiencies in the development team, which goes back to my previous comment. There was something seriously wrong with the CO team back then, be it incompetent leadership, improperly scaled dev team, improper use of funds, ect, and I'm willing to bet not much has changed since then. Even if the desire and drive to make the best city builder possible is in the hearts of every CO developer, there is something significant holding them back, and this is inarguable at this point. No matter how you slice it, the story of CS2's development has "troubled" all over it. And comparing the state of the first game's release to this one is no excuse. They were supposed to learn from the mistakes of the CS1 launch, not repeat them with the launch of CS2. But here we are.
@ThaJay3 ай бұрын
@@AyyyGabagool You don't have to tell me they should have released at least a year later. Especially not with that many words. I know, I have over 1000 hours in CS1 and almost 300 hours in CS2. Please don't trauma dump on strangers on the internet. Most of us realize they have a shitty publisher and a mediocre pr team. Doesn't change the fact they CHOOSE to rely on mods for advanced / power user features like they always have. The backbone is here. Stop playing until next year if you want polished. They have my money already so might as well enjoy what I have. This mod is the game changer I have been waiting for for years. Now I can finally implement the correct junctions everywhere in my city instead of going for creative but imperfect solutions.
@AyyyGabagool3 ай бұрын
@@ThaJay Well I'm not really sure why you even replied to my comment in the first place then if we were in agreement already. My biggest takeaway was that CO, for better or worse, is banking on mods to finish their game. My point is that they have demonstrated that they have no interest in finishing it themselves any time soon.(Which SHOULD very much be a cause for concern). As to a casual player myself, the stuff that is missing, broken, or poorly implemented are still beyond disappointing. I don't even plan on using this mod, but even a fraction of the customization this mod offers in the base game would be amazing. Do not get it twisted, catering your game towards a casual playerbase is NO excuse for pawning off incomplete projects as a full game with the promise of it being better at some unknown future date.

This is the kinda stuff I assumed C:S2 would come with from the start. Glad to see the modding community saving this game

I'm glad it's finally happened. Years ago I thought that roads should be essentially just a path, and edge connecting two nodes in a network and on that edge you can place whatever lane types you want. The toolbox in CSL shouldn't be lanes, lanes which can be configured (which direction, parking, bikes, buses, tram tracks, no heavy traffic, etc. - want a road where each lane alternates directions? knock yourself out) Then at nodes it uses some best-guess algorithm to automatically join up lanes in the intersection or allow you to do it yourself. Nothing new or crazy even at the time, but glad to finally see something like it.

I haven't been to Chicago. But my hometown Perth Australia has the metro rail down the centre of our main highway. So I love this. And I grew up thinking this was a completely common and normal thing.

Seeing a mod like this really makes you wonder what CO and Paradox were doing for all those years while CS:2 was in development.

Making the code robust enough to allow for this.

Do you think this kind of modularity happens by accident?
@Shwafta3 ай бұрын
This is what I was asking for a few weeks back!! I posted on the forum talking about modular roads where instead of the weird hard-coded roads they release, just have a modular road where you can choose what lane everything goes. I'm SUPER stoked to have this soon!!!

W mod. Why do game company's sell their games for like 50 buck each, when they dont heve features like this in to the vanilla game?
@VinceP19743 ай бұрын
Hmmmm... maybe because a smallish team can't do 160 things simultaneously. They designed the game so that people can hook into it to provide the functionality. So you use it or you don't. What's so hard about that concept?
@simongeard48243 ай бұрын
@@VinceP1974 Exactly... the number of modders is *much* higher than the number of people employed by a typical game developer. And many of the latter *are* modders... quite a few notable CS:1 modders ended up getting jobs out of it.
@KaitouKaiju3 ай бұрын
Making a game as polished and functional as even CS2 with all its flaws, complete with extensibility for mods like this, is a lot of work on its own. Too many people think something is easy just because they can't see the part that isn't user facing.
@prorussianman3 ай бұрын
THIS IS INSANE!!! Changes the whole game, you're going to have like 20 episodes now realizing the vision of Magnolia County with this tool!!!

I’ve been waiting for one the content creators to pick this up and really put it through its paces!
@TheDrew20223 ай бұрын
@23:05 Love that you can do that with train tracks as there's a lot of places across the USA where a railway line runs right down the middle of the road. Speed limited but the ability to simulate that in our city builds is kinda cool.
@GuySilva-rk2fe3 ай бұрын
I can't wait to try this one... One thing i noticed though, was that when you finished the train track, on the crossroads near the station you placed, there was one of those moving road gates (i dont really know how you call it, but its a barrier that goes up and down to allow passage or block it), that strangely was set on the first lane or the road, where it makes no sense at all. I guess its either because is still a work in progress, or maybe you needed to tweak it a little more ;) You can see it at 22:46 on the video.
@Subreon3 ай бұрын
this is an absolute game changer. the complete and total on the fly creativity you can squeeze in that only works in one space is now possible without flooding your pc and game with a million road assets with very limited use cases and needing the search mod just to find them. now you can just make them as you need them, and with none of the extra nonsense they include in them, like side parking. holy crap this is GLORIOUS

This is SO EXCITING!! It would be cool if CO would add certain mods under official support. That way it wouldn’t break every update lol

When you swapped the tram direction on that one segment, it made me realize you could use this to make a super easy diverging diamond interchange.

This will be even better than it already is once bikes are in the game, and you can use this mod to build protected bike lanes.

This mod makes me very happy for many reasons but mainly because I’ve always had a vision for what an ideal public rail system would look like and this gives me the opportunity to build it in the sim.

This mod is absolutely insane. This also opens up for a lot more real world city reproductions, since they usually have weird road configs.
@brittanyvancamp93963 ай бұрын
I would love to see the ability to add concrete barriers as one of the "shoulder" lanes. I don't mean sound barrier walls like we have in other areas of the game, but those concrete barriers that you see during road construction. It'd add a level of realism to the visual representation of roads, especially the highways. Traffic cones would be another fun cosmetic addition so you could make it look like a traffic lane is blocked for construction. Not sure that anyone else would want to have this, but I kind of like the idea of my sims having to live through the same urban hellscapes as I do in real life.

A lovely mod to start up my new city with. Everything I've made up until now has just been boring 'let's plays'. I'm still not very creative, but I hope with the vastly flatter terrain of my own custom map, I'll be able to make something people might want to watch, including my 4 subs that I've acquired since November '23. Anyway, thank you TDW for your awesome contribution, and to you CPP for the demonstration.

OMG on this! Like this si perfect. I had always thought it would be cool to be able to design like a super 'here is everything in theory' type road and with this tool you can. Super wide sidewalks, tree lanes, bike lanes, bus/taxi lane, tree lane, main road, center lane, and then on repeat. So much potential! Especially if you add main road, green space, monorail line, green space, main road, etc. So much potential. This is brilliant. I wonder what sort of 'futuristic' utopia-style road systems you can build using this tool. hehe

I've been waiting for a mod like this since the first Cities: Skylines. The possibilites this opens up are incredible. I've recently been working on recreating my home town but there is *so much more* variety in road layout than even a heavily modded game can offer. This will be an absolute game-changer.
