As someone with experience of nuclear power station design, I noticed a few things off about your nuclear power facility: - Security: These facilities are usually designed as cul-de-sacs to have only one entry/exit point to guard. Also it needs a security fence. - Access: I've yet to come across a nuclear facility that does not have a rail connection. Though I know this has no functionality in-game. Rail is preferred as it is easier to secure and less likely to have accidents when moving nuclear materials. Plus it is used during construction and decommissioning to move large parts, such as primary containment. - Fire: A small on-site fire station could act as the facilities hazard response. When I build these in-game, if I'm not using a mod to add a more realistic scale of facility, I like to use the geothermal station along side and pretend it is an auxiliary part of the facility. I do like that you've grouped the reactor together, which is the normal way of locating reactors to improve security, reduce local opposition and concentrate professional expertise. Really enjoying the series, can't wait for the transport build!

@@1bigfoe Take a look at the Bruce B. Nuclear Generating station in Ontario, the Palisades Nuclear plant on Lake Michigan, the Saint Lucie Nuclear plant in Florida, and the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Tennessee is right on the water. Plus there’s a neighborhood less than a mile from the plant. Fukushima Nuclear Powerplant was maybe too close to the ocean though…

I don't think any of the nuclear power plants in my country have rail access, so rail access might not be a universal thing for nuclear plants. I don't see why rail access wouldn't be a good suggestion for this city though, since it already has a railroad going through it.

Hey Phil, professional astronomer here, your observatory placement is pretty good! Its actually a pretty interesting problem and the approach to placing these structures has changed significantly over the past ~100 years. Most observatories in major American cities are historic artifacts from the late 19th/early 20th century. The Griffith Observatory is a good example, although it was built originally with public education in mind. A nearby example of a research focused telescope, which actually fundamentally changed the way we build telescopes, is the Mount Wilson Observatory! At the time the main point of concern was altitude. Atmospheric turbulence can "smear" out the light from stars, so the higher up you build, the less atmosphere you need to look through, the better. When the Mount Wilson Observatory was built they actually had to use a mule-train to climb up several miles of footpaths to get the materials up there. Not only was there no road, but at the time automobiles shook so violently that they couldn't transport the mirror without breaking it! Looking at the landscape, that hill seems like a pretty plausible location for an observatory built by a university in the ~1910-1930s. At that time there would be no sky scrapers blocking views and light pollution would be far less of a problem. In fact, at that time astronomy was largely focused on studying stars and the planets, which are bright enough that light pollution isn't such a worry. We didn't even know then that other galaxies existed! We thought that they were just strange looking clouds of gas very near by. It wasn't until Edwin Hubble used the Mount Wilson Observatory to measure the distance to the Andromeda galaxy at the end of the 1920s that astronomers realized just how big the universe is, and how important it was to be able to see faint, big structures like galaxies! At that point observatories started being constructed far away from cities, in the darkest possible conditions. On your map that would probably be on the other side of the mountains in the background, they could use the mountains to block some of the effects of light pollution, and be very high up at the same time. Unfortunately, a good example of this would be my institution, the University of Hawaii. In the 60s the newly formed state government gave the summit of Mauna Kea, the largest mountain on the planet from base to summit and a sacred site for native Hawaiians, to the university to build what is still one of the most advanced ground-based observatories in the world. I say unfortunately because of this, the fact that the observatories were built as a part of colonization and the striping of native Hawaiian's rights. This is all too common, those "remote", "untouched", "empty" places often happen to coincide with the places where previous inhabitants are being kicked out of. And given the fights that have happened over the Thirty Meter Telescope, and what I have heard from colleagues, we still haven't learned our lesson. These days most major observatories are either put into space where there is no atmosphere to worry about, or placed on the grounds of already existing observatories. I would be really curious to hear what ideas you might have for working with local communities to build something like an observatory with the consent of all interested parties!

When you said U Hawaii's observatory was misplaced, I was interested in how it was pragmatically detrimental to the science. Instead, you revealed that the scientific practicality wasnt lacking at all, the reason you disapprove of the location is because of your low self esteem projected on a societal level. There's a reason native Hawaiians never built a state of the art observatory and Western culture did. Only one of these cultures is capable of such engineering. You don't need the "consent of all parties" to go buy groceries for your children. A high tech observatory is beyond the "scope" of native Hawaiian culture. To advocate the compromising of Western innovation to overcater to the sensibilities of cultures that can't even comprehend its accomplishments is a projection of your low self esteem onto the society disguised to yourself as a noble morality.

What an amazing writeup. Thank you for sharing so we could all learn more! It's really a shame how often people use "scientific advancement" as an excuse to disrespect other lands and cultures. Scientific progress is important, but only because it helps us better our communities as a whole with education and understanding. The minute we step on other cultures and people to pursue research, we are stepping on the principles of believing science is important because of the betterment of all, and reveal that we're willing to take away from the wellbeing of some, to advance the wellbeing of others. I would also love to see a future where we find a way to combine our love of learning and science with our abilities to work with other people collaboratively instead of in a controlling and colonizing way. I think it would make the results of the work that much better. But more importantly, we would be treating each other better. What good is the science if we step on other people to get there?

The mountaintop observatory area would be an amazing place for a technical university instead of the single high-density university building on the highway. Also, I think the space elevator makes the most sense on one of the islands next to the airport, or an artificial island.
@IONATVS
@IONATVS Жыл бұрын
I’d place it a little farther away from the airport than that, because a space elevator would naturally require flight path restrictions around it-even in its barest bones form it’s literally a cable reaching from ground to space with elevator cars riding up and down it, after all-an island or artificial island is a very good call though.
@ReCrofnead
@ReCrofnead Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine that the ideal place for a space elevator would be a large open plain to prevent obstructions to air traffic, while also giving the elevator the space it needs to remain safe for the local populace. Possibly as the epicenter of a larger facility that surrounds it.

I know it would be a lot of work for a silly monument, but I think it would be really cool if you could put the space elevator on an artificial island off the coast a bit. That would fit more to the concept of what a space elevator is, and honestly I think it would be quite dangerous to have an airport near a cable going to space
@IONATVS
@IONATVS Жыл бұрын
This. A cable running from the ground to geostationary orbit would need massive flight restrictions around it, since its liable to be both a target for terrorism (broken cable = very bad day for a lot of people, even if very difficult to pull off) AND by being the one obstacle a plane can’t go OVER, liable to cause of a lot of accidents if planes get too near, especially in high wind or low visibility conditions. Plus the initial cable drop into the anchor would be a scary, loud, and potentially-risky-to-the-immediate-surroundings operation, so probably best to keep it a little out of the way. And an island or artificial island would also give it controlled access more generally, making it easier to lock down for a credible terror threat.

I think one of the largest issues w/ the old "monument area" (Summit Square?) is that you are lacking PARKING. There is basically no street parking, given the road you chose for the area. Therefore, people are parking anywhere they can (up that road to the observatory!). Might want to consider some parking lots or a parking structure :)

Hey Phil, this was a great video! My only suggestion is I don’t think that the airport would allow the space elevator to be developed so close to where planes are landing and taking off (especially with the elevator going upward into the sky and potentially in flight paths). You’d probably see a lot of concern for the safety of planes or people using the elevator.

@IONATVS
@IONATVS Жыл бұрын
@@piersnivans5983 Space elevators are perfectly plausible under known physics. We can’t currently make materials with the massive required strength-to-weight ratio to build one at anything approaching the industrial scales require yet, and even if we did it would be an extremely expensive endeavor to pull it off, but we know such materials exist and once we can mass-produce them, we could build one with known technology. Essentially the concept is you launch a bunch of prefabricated components into geostationary orbit, assemble them into a big counterweight/space station and a massive 22,000 mile/36,000 km cable, then slowly lower that cable down to the surface somewhere on the equator, where it gets grabbed by a massive anchor. Then you just latch some vehicles onto the cable that can ride it all the way to space, meaning you’ve basically just replaced the most expensive part of getting stuff into space-the launch-with a vertical train. The only part of that couldn’t be done today with the (admittedly tremendous) infrastructure capital and political will it would require is the cable itself, which with current mass-producable materials would collapse under its own weight (or alternatively, would need to be built with active support structures, where you constantly apply forces in the right areas along the cable to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight, which could be done today, but would be even more expensive AND make it so it would collapse if it ever lost power for an extended period of time, so nobody sane would make one that way while passive options are on the table). But again, the technology is well within near-future capabilities, so it’s Science Fiction, but HARD Science Fiction. The politics and funding (likely tens to hundreds of trillions that would be made back eventually because of how much cheaper it will make getting people and cargo to orbit, but not soon) parts will likely make it remain Science Fiction for a long time yet, but people can and do discuss what it would take to actually build one, and if the money and will materializes we could absolutely see them turn into Science Fact in this century.

On one node of the alleyway going to the Observatory you should enable the TMPE option to turnaround in the middle of the street, they go all the way up there just to turn around and park at the bottom, or park at the bottom and need to go up then down to leave. Although it makes the observatory feel like a real interest point. (It is a button like the one to allow lane switching on a node)

A couple things. 1st: You can disable parking on the road going up to the observatory using TMPE 2nd: Something to consider with the space elevator.... I think I've said it before, but the city tours in these abandoned city builds are my favorite of all the city tours. Usually they're a fun way to see how an area has changed, but usually that's a monumental change or, at the very least, a preplanned one. These ones are a lot of fun because they show what are usually minor changes- or at least changes that don't impact the character of the area, like tapering the skyline- but that have a huge impact of taking the build from good to beautiful.

The Griffith Park Observatory in LA *USED* to be used for real science, but as the city has grown and since more bigger and more isolated observatories have been built, the light pollution has *relegated* it to be mostly a historical/tourist/interest-building monument. I think the same can be the idea here: it was built before downtown got so tall, at the time being shielded from the lights of downtown by its position, and by the time downtown got that big, other, bigger telescopes had largely superseded its scientific value anyway, so the scientific community didn’t fight the buildup in downtown as much as they would have had it still been serving its original purpose, and the telescope used more to inspire the next generation of scientists instead.

Hi Phi, THe Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles is still in use to this day! Just ask @GriffithObservatory. It is free to the public and you can still look though its telescopes. They also host events when there are celestial events (e.g. a solar or lunar eclipse) and they have staff out there to help the public. Parking is a bit tight but there is a shuttle bus. Given its hillside location they also have a ton of hiking opportunities around it so you can view not only the mountains, but the LA basin and the Hollywood Sign. Maybe think about making the telescope a little more of a public attraction by constructing some public trails in the surrounding areas, put some parking lots and a shuttle bus from the downtown transit center.

The New Mombasa Orbital Lift (space elevator) from Halo 3 was built on a small artificial island approximately 1.5 miles away from mainland Kenya. It had a large parking and drop off area for public transport and three ferry terminals. The land around the space elevator was used as a city park, and the closest shoreline to the space elevator was part of the New Mombasa Uplift Reserve, the largest natur reserve ever created. I hope that gives you a good idea for where to put the space elevator in Lake Valley.

One of the buildings in the downtown district is kinda bothering me, its the trump tower (the big tall blue one) and it is kind of facing towards a mountain. I get it space limited but what the people working there looked to see a side of a mountain 😅. It is ok though, great episode can't wait for more.

Frank "The Tank" Battaglia got his nickname because of his over 6' beefy frame, the way he gunned down base stealers, and his high hitting average during his career in Little League, Escanaba High School, the University of Michigan, the Milwaukee Brewers and Minnesota Twins. While Frank went to university, he took mostly business courses, and he invested most of his major league salary. A few years ago, he retired from Major League Baseball, and went back to the University of Michigan to get his MBA degree. Recently, Johnson Aggregates CEO and Superior Governor Sheila Johnson got into a bit of controversy over the fact that she owned a part of the MLS' Verde Beach Meteors, but she's not even attracting minor league teams to Superior, so she sold her part of the Meteors to Frank "The Tank" Battaglia, and his new company, Superior Team Management. Hiring experts in soccer and marketing, the Meteors are gaining ground in the MLS standings. Lately, he joined with Gov. Johnson to buy and relocate pro sports teams to Superior. The partnership bought the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, and moved them to Van Buren's Superior State University Buccaneers Stadium. They've also bought the NHL's Arizona Coyotes, and the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves. Also, with Major League Baseball's expansion coming up, they are proposing a bid for one of 6 expansion teams. Ground is being broken for the new Johnson Aggregates Center, featuring a pro-level baseball stadium and a pro-level arena for the Coyotes and Timberwolves (the pro-level basketball stadium will work).

30:25 Because of fine particles and just regular air, there is extreme amounts of light pollution in cities. This makes any city observatory scientifically useless. This can be seen by looking up at the night sky in dense areas, suburbs, and countryside. Light pollution is a really big thing. In the UK, for instance, there are only two black sky areas left. So that observatory would be turned into a museum/place of learning. Perhaps the hotels DLC might be a valuable addition here, like with the Pic du Midi in France?
@op8288
@op8288 Жыл бұрын
As an aside, Earth based observatories are becoming less and less scientifically useful. As science progresses, we demand more and more precise observations. For example, our understanding of the speed of light increases in accuracy over time, with each new measurement demanding more expensive and higher quality equipment and personnel than the previous. All this means is that observatories which aren't affected by light pollution, or atmospheric disturbance, or satellite interference are the most cutting edge laboratories possible: space telescopes like Hubble and Webb. In particular, it means that the most valuable science is aligned with existing power structures, and is only allowed to be published if it is politically convenient to do so.

Love the series, there is a long stretch of 1 or 2unit buildings along the river near the IT cluster. I think it would be really cool idea to turn that area in a bit of a river waterfront, as I don't believe you have any in the city. (added benefit of removing the 1u building line)

I like playing with the monuments, but I typically have really high land values long before hitting the milestone that unlocks them. I tend to build my schools with an eye to coverage, not capacity. And my schools are almost always viewed as a community asset for me with parks added more often than not. The monuments certainly break "realism" but I play games to escape reality, not be reminded of it. :) The unique buildings are great, too. Some of them are required to place some monuments, but others also give some nice perks (increasing tourist stay length, buffing ship/air/road capacity, etc). I enjoy attracting tourists, and those unique buildings go a long way toward creating lovely tourist traps.

27:26 A question about that residential, wouldn't one have to basically make some kind of circuit to get back home when they head out for any specific reason? There're no schools, parks, clinics, stores...like if they were self-contained, I'd let it go, but right now as it stands, leaving the apartment for some groceries could end up being a half-hour to an hour drive / 2 hour ride.

Can't wait for your transit episode where you build the subways! May I make a suggestion? Since your downtown has the Metro Plaza Hub I would like the downtown called Tearantula Point, since it's on a point obviously and Tearantula is Biffa's name for the Metro Plaza Hub. Thanks. PS Excellent makeover! Now the monuments won't bust your budget.

As I said in the last episode; I'd really see a metro viaduct get out into the air between the Upper Downtown and the road leading to it from the port district. It would go serving the undevelopped part of the bay. Add a ped facility to link better the two parts of Downtown along with a forest on the mountainside. A cable car transit could be in order to serve the observatory, just saying. Thanks for the Cathedral/tower swap.

Phil, I don't think the space elevator makes sense near the airport, and may not make sense in this city at all. Here's why: -Building height: the building as it is shown is too tall, and probably breaks height restrictions for the airspace. -What is a space elevator?: Conceptually, a space elevator is composed of an anchor point on the ground, attached to a cable , which is attached to a counterweight in high earth orbit. In theory, we would be able to send cargo and people into geostationary orbit (meaning the object in orbit remains constantly above the same point on Earth's surface). Not only could this function completely replace an airport, but the giant cable into space seems poorly located where a plane could easily crash into it. -Where can a space elevator be built?: A space elevator must be able to remain geostationary, otherwise the cable would certainly strain too much and inevitably snap. By definition, a geostationary orbit MUST be equatorial, because if you change the orbit's inclination (the angle of the orbit with respect to the equator) it could pass over a specific location on earth's surface but could only do so once per day at a specific time. Based on the climate theme of this city it seems unlikely that it is located on the equator, as opposed to Verde Beach, which, due to it's tropical climate, could be equatorial and so it makes sense from the standpoint of realism.

The space elevator should be on top of a mountain. Haven’t you ever read “Fountains of Paradise” by Clark? Right on top of a monastery. Lol. Or get rid of it, as it is kind of misplaced being the only futuristic building in a non-futuristic city. Love the video. 😊

A lot of people have already suggested moving the Space Elevator to one of the islands (or to an artificial island), and I second that. It definitely should _not_ be anywhere near where planes might be flying! But more importantly, a space elevator (as envisioned in science fiction and real-world concept plans) is supposed to be an enormous (and enormously expensive and complex) piece of transport infrastructure that connects the Earth's surface into orbit, allowing (relatively) cheap transport of people and cargo from Earth to space and back. Basically imagine the biggest international airport you can imagine, then imagine something even bigger. Of course the game doesn't model it like that, but that's basically what a space elevator is supposed to be. And of course it should also be connect to an actual airport close by - but not too close, because as mentioned you _really_ don't want airplanes anywhere near what's basically a very tall and _very_ expensive cable hanging from the sky.

Great video. 😊 You are right that 1x1 are bad, they should just be gas stations and convenience stores. Clearly the observatory predates the modern city, like Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Good name for it by the way. 😊 I still think there is not enough high rise apartments in downtown. I keep thinking of Hong Kong with buildings on steep slopes. The land value is high enough. I also think you should get rid of the single family homes in the second downtown area. That area would be full of brownstone row houses in a tight grid of small streets.😊

I really commend you for what you do in this game. It takes skills of different kinds. I've been attempting a beautiful and sensible city this week. 31:49 Why not put the space elevator on that small island near the airport? It would be dramatic and one can probably put in a small parking garage even. And it would be interesting if there was an option for a neighborhood to do a transition of density. I wonder if it will be in the new game coming out.
