People completely underestimate the power and versatility of a 22 long rifle. I can shoot quarter's at 100 yards all day long. So a 25 round magazine at 1000 rounds of ammo will serve anyone very well.

A lot of youtubers say guns shouldnt be among your main prepper items. Thats not true, especially in the US. Guns have multiple functions as a prepping item. Security being the main one. If you pile up all the food and meds and fuel in the world and you cant stop a robbery then what was it all for? I say that guns are the first and most important prep item. You dont have to be a gun nut to see that.

I think as long as they keep making .357's, the .38 cartridge is pretty secure. And in a prepper scenario, if you have a couple where one member is recoil sensitive, you can get 2 .357 revolvers, the sensitive one shoots .38's, if you have a mechanical malfunction you can still use all your ammo. I'm kind of on the fence about pistol caliber carbines, but if you had to travel you would only have to pack one type of ammunition. So 2 .357 revolvers and a .357 carbine for our hypothetical couple. You could do worse.

Honestly I think a high powered air gun like an Edgun or AirForce would be perfect for preppers. They're probably not going to be much use for defense, but as long as you had access to a compressor and electricity, and a means to caste pellets, you'll never run out of ammunition. No need for power or brass or primers. Capable of taking down small or even smaller medium size game and target practice to save your ammo for your firearms for bigger game or defense. They're also much quieter than firearms.

Don’ get a weapon that you fit into... get those that fit you best... that you are comfortable in controlling. Go to ranges where you can rent... try out even those you are skeptical of... you might be surprised ! Then buy, practice w/ barebones & get proficient. THEN get the “toys” (scopes, lazers, lites, etc) When (NOT if ) they fail... you already have the skills to take them off & go barebones if necessary to be efficient. Get on some nuisance store’s lists to find ammo sales ...THEN use your budgeted pittances to stock up.

While I don't disagree with your picks, I have gone a different route. We decided to limit the ammo diversity. We now purchase 9mm, 5.56, and 22 lr firearms exclusively. All these are common, and having multiple firearms in the same configuration makes it easy to share magazines/parts, etc. While I still own others, we will concentrate on these three for future purchases. (we have a shotgun and x-caliber inserts in case we 'scavenge' ammo calibers for arms we don't own.) I would like to suggest, if you haven't tried one, the Primary Arms 1-6x24 scope for your 308. I am a Vortex guy, but recently purchased some PA products, and have really been happy with them. Thanks for the video, keep up the great work!
@GeorgiaBoy1961

Vortex makes a good product, but Primary Arms reticle designs - especially the ACSS - are state-of-the-art in the industry right now. PA's reticle designs are so good that Trijicon, having failed to top them, licensed the ACSS for use in its TA31 ACOG line. Vortex is something like Leupold used to be - an American firm which makes high-quality, affordable optics. Leupold's optics are still great, but they've gotten quite expensive in recent years if you want their premium-grade gear.

There's no wrong answer here. You can stick to common rounds but you risk that everyone else is also looking for those rounds. Or you can go wild cat, but most local ranges don't carry those. So you could wind up with a paperweight either way.

Plus 12 gauge is 10 rounds per pound, 5.56 30 rounds per pound, .22 over 100 r/lbs. While you could loot anyone who might attack you. Factoring in affordability, the Savage Model 10 beats the Remington 700 for a .308 bolt action. The money saved would help you get that overpowered scope. Similarly, a Mossberg 500 gets you all the reliability of the Remington 870 and saves a $100.

I think the nosin nagant is a bad 2nd option as a "prepper rifle" since the bulk ammo is corrosive and the factory ammo is made over seas. Ruger, mossberg, and savage make rifles close in price to where mosin nagants are at now, and in standard US cartridges like 30.06 270 308 243 223 338 300 win mag etc. Also as an alternative to the vortex scope you mentioned saving up for an swfa fixed power mrad or mildot is very hard to beat, and will hold up which is important for the type of situation you're describing.

As always, a commendably sane, reasoned discussion on prepping topics, this time on the highly charged subject of firearms. Props for putting firearms in perspective in terms of priorities for prepping. I personally own a Palmetto State Arms AR-15. But I'd like to give a shout out to the lowly Hi Point carbine, which you referenced as a budget alternative to the more popular (and expensive) AR/AK options. It's sort of apples to oranges because the Hi Point uses a pistol cartridge and the AR/AK variants fire much more powerful rifle calibers. But I've test fired the Hi Point at a gun range and was very impressed. It happened to be the same caliber as my handgun (9mm) so the owner let me shoot it quite a bit since I was providing my own ammunition. He, I and another range shooter ran it extensively all afternoon with zero malfunctions and we all agreed that out to about 75 yards, it was commendably accurate. For a firearm newbie on a very tight budget and who isn't interested in concealed carry, the Hi Point nicely bridges many of the roles of both a handgun and carbine. A novice would certainly be far more accurate and comfortable shooting it than a handgun in the same caliber.

Bit of advice for people regarding shotguns, don’t rely on them as a bug out weapon. If the situation is bad enough you need to bug out on foot, hauling around a shotgun is not the way to go simply because of ammunition size and weight. You will not be able to carry a lot of ammo on hand, forcing you to rely more on another weapon which would take up even more space and weight. Shotguns are best used when either bugging in, or bugging out with the help of a vehicle. That’s because you can have much easier access to ammo than you would just hoofing it. Still, won’t deny that having access to powerful/versatile 12 gauge ammo is useful. Think I remember there being a 2 barrelled rifle that shot 22lr and 12 gauge that would work well.

Remember a AR 15 comes in many other calibers besides 223--556 X 45. Uppers even are offered in 7.62 X39. And if you put one together from parts you can save a lot. As in pistols the Glock 19 is great and I put one together. Don't forget the Hi Point pistols that do go bang & cheap.

City Prepping I'll be back home soon. Yeah, the CMMG kit is a good buy. Pretty reliable, and shoots 1" groups at 25. Accurare enough for what I use it. I mostly shoot suppressed, so it's really quiet. I have a video of what it sounds like from the target. They're well worth the money and is an advantage the AR has over other guns. Between 5.56 and 22lr, everything from squirrel, birds, rabbits, and deer cam be effectively killed.

I have a Glock 32 slide and barrel so I can turn my .40 caliber Glock 23 into a .357 Sig Auto for that scenario, in case I ran out of .40 caliber and came across some .357 Sig, but I didn't know that about the .45. For handgun and carbine I chose the Glock and the AR platforms. Mostly for availability simplicity and reliability. But also because both platforms have readily available 22LR conversion kits. Which allows for cheaper plinking or the takedown of smaller game. And while the Glock 19 is an excellent choice. If you choose the Glock 23 you can get a 9mm or a 357 Sig conversion barrel. Which will make it much easier to find ammunition in the event that it's hard to find. So essentially with the 22lr conversion kit and the two conversion barrels you have a choice of four different rounds.

I like the DD rifle. That's a good one. If I might give you two minor suggestions. (Make that 3.) 1. Your rear back up sight in on backwards, flip it around so that it is going over that section at the back without picatinny rail when folded. That will then let you bring your EoTech back and closer to your eye for a wider sight picture. 2. Ditch that quad rail, unnecessary weight. You can find something that will still let you attach your light. Find the right fore end and you can easily drop half a pound off that rifle. 3. Ditch the Magpul BAD lever, I know it's cool but it clogs up the trigger well and can cause you to accidentally lock the bolt open while firing, especially if you are wearing winter gloves. Practice reloading so that your thumb is automatically over the bolt release when you insert your magazine. Hope this was helpful.

I agree, move out of California. Personally, I choose the AR15 in 5.56 AND a CCMG .22lr chamber insert, This gives you small game harvesting options with large ammo cache possibilities AND standard 5.56/ .223 increased fire power Handgun wise, I go with my G22 AND my lone wolf 9mm conversion barrel. This gives me the option of two different calibers in one handgun. I have many other options including a 12 guage pump shotgun but the above two are my choice for my prepper firearms.

you should look into the Kel-Tec Su-16. It takes Ar- magazines and is chambered in .223/5.56 but is operated by a piston system like an AK. Not to mention it is incredibly light and folds in half for storage. It makes a great packpack rifle that can still reach out and pack a punch. I put mine through 2 years or moderate to heavy use without cleaning it once and it continued to operate flawlessly. It might not be what you're looking for but it is a solid option that not many are aware of.

The noise will call in your killers, and you'd havre to clean that pos bp gun EVERY time you shot it, then reload it, and still have to worry about the clunker drawing moisture and misfiring, or having a weak charge. There wont be any game left, 2 months after shtf. A silenced .22lr auto is FAR superior choice to any cap and ball gun. You get only 170 shots to a lb of BP, and the lead balls are heavy.

A great “inside 100-yard” option is one of many 9mm rifles. Kel Tec has a folding budget model, Colt, Beretta... all are easy to afford, easy to use, and they feed off of the same ammo as your Glock 19. And if you’re willing to keep an eye on your used guns in stores and online auctions, you can find a Marlin 9mm Camp Rifle. Every person who wants to be prepared should get themselves a double barrel 12g and a single barrel 20g. Then get caliber chamber reducers/adapters. With my double barrel 12g an 20g I have various rifled and smooth bore adapters that will allow me to fire 12 different calibers through them. You can get pistol and rifle adapters.

I liked the video, and my choice for a very affordable rifle is the Ruger AR556 which went for $ 499 and i love it , its very reliable, never experienced a malfunction, and as of this response to your video i am making some improvements to it , wish i could share a picture.

On carbine length rails, some put the front sight backwards to save top rail space which is generally occupied by a PEQ or pressure switch for it or a laser. Those with 40mms also may favor the inline iron sights which also take up more rail space.

I prefer shorter weapons to keep someone from grabbing or wrestling the barrel away from me. I would not be using my firearm for hunting animals. It would be for personal and property protection. I also am concerned about recoil. I appreciate your bringing attention to the cost of ammo. I would also opt for an automatic as well for the reasons you have stated. I would go with the 9mm or the Glock 19 you just mentioned.

@@christianmetzger7074 Well there really is no "best" or "most practical" rifle, you can a lot of good arguements for a 556 AR-15 but it is in no way a "powerful rifle" cartridge. It is imtermidiate as far as rifles rounds go. Round has decent KE but is rather lacking in knock down power, especially when compared to other popular rifle rounds like 30-06, 308win, 300blackout, 44magnum, etc.

@@StoutAdventureCo well yeah, but you named marksman, thug, and dirty harry rounds lol. The m416 in my opinion is the greatest adaptable rifle possible if your looking at an overall tactical rifle. Maneuverability, precision, distance, accuracy, even damage plus it looks gorgeous. There's a reason our military adopted that round in the 60's.

@@christianmetzger7074 my original point still stands, 556 is by no means "one of the most powerful rifles", it is a fairly weak cartridge compared to other rifle rounds. You have done nothing to prove this point wrong and instead just rant about qualitiea you down redeeming about 556. I dont care if you like 556, shoot all the 556 you want, it is still by no means "one of the most powerful rifles" as this video states and it is comical to even hear such a thing.

I recommend a Springfield socom-16. It's much like an AR-15 with a couple exceptions. It is light, small, and use hunting caliber (.308). I will say they are expensive but worth it. Long lasting.

Have to agree with the training. A $2500 custom AR with no training is a dust collector. a $700 base line Bushmaster with a few thousand rounds and a good veteran friend is an effective tool for defense, hunting or just a fun day at the range.
