Course to Steer - RYA Day Skipper

I'm a bit lost at 6:15... At this point we don't know the speed of the tide or the direction, so how do we know our speed over ground/how long it will take? I kept watching and I think I get it... I'm making flashcards to study - does this mini description makes sense: "Measure A - B, calc speed & draw line past B. Use tide diamond & if Spring/Neap to calculate C position. Arc from C to B line to find D, use C to D for Course to Steer" Is that right? Thanks!

You need an approximate time of the passage to the nearest hour or half-hour to be able to predict the CTS, it does not matter if it is too big or small as it is an approximation. Draw a line from your start to your finish A to B, and add the tide from A for the time (the one you guessed to the nearest hour or half-hour) you are on the passage. Then add the tide for this time (calculate this from the diamond or tidal streams), from the end of the tide measure the distance you are going to through the water and arc it on the A B line, this is your course to steer. I hope this helps
