Civ 5 Managing Happiness While Expanding

When playing Tradition, how soon should you expand? Rush a Settler at 2 population? 3 pop? 4? Do I need to build a worker first? How do I deal with happiness while trying to claim all the lands that I want?
Hopefully, this video will offer some insight on things to look for when making some of these crucial early game decisions.

Waiting for a long time to expand only works until Emperor. When you play in Immortal and Deity it is necessary to have at least 4 cities before industrial age because the AI will overwhelm you with settlers.

@@jonathanbauer2988 i have to agree jonathan, on deity the AI expands way top aggressively, and you have to hope you get a money/happiness themed religion to help expand very quickly while remaining viable for the early-mid game. I find the problem is then, that i upset the AIs and they tend to declare war before i stabilise enough to build a defensive army.

@@Mindhumble Its nuts, to be honest winning on diety requires a perfect start, which means restarting over and over again until you have it. Perfect start with a civ that can make huge early game strides

It's not an explanation, it's a demonstration. If you want an explanation, seek a text guide you can consume at your leisure. This is Civ 5, not checkers. There's many things in the world I receive no value from, but that doesn't mean shitting on it will somehow provide value for me.

Yeah it's a tradeoff, a huge early game advantage versus an insignificant advantage later on. Always settle on luxuries when the terrain allows you to do it without gimping your city.

I know this video is a bit old, but at 26:00 with 3 wheat in your capital and several other wheat or cocoa tiles within expansion range I would have been really tempted to take Sun God as the pantheon. Sure, it doesn't generate faith, but the ridiculous growth would have allowed you to grow pop in fewer turns when you wanted to and work fewer food tiles when stagnating for happiness reasons or just focusing on production.

Short version, it's tied to Unique luxuries. 99% of my maps offer 2 at the capital, the first Unique outside the capital is always, always, always one tile to a city state and will get eaten. I can scout multiple maps and based on Unique luxuries be left with no place to settle. I've seen AI Civ's spend 200 turns and not work their luxuries, buy them from me even though they have one in their borders. Another thing I figured out with Honor is, you kill a barb camp and another will spawn the very next turn. There are always a specific amount on the map until borders reduce the numbers. Where they spawn and how close to you is pure random. If you end up dedicating disproportionate amounts of time to repair, it drags you back and that's pretty much the Barb objective. Eat your turns. So much of this game AI is devoted to 'poke ya in da eye' horseshit. Finding maps that reduce that is gold in starts.

See, I like settling on a mountain, rather than a gold lux, the extra hammer is helpful early. (I rush settlers.) I think I'd've put a the capitol on sheep hill, there. Later on, I'd've put another settle on the hill at the river mouth. (After I'd placed border cities.) That "bad expand?" It'd be GREAT if you can nab desert faith and petra.

Hi, it seems like you are doing everything right (and better than me), but if I watch top top players like Moriarte, RezoAcken, FilthyRobot etc it seems their numbers are better. I can't figure out what they are doing different to you that makes them do better, except for playing on Deity. As I understand it, Deity gives you some edges like earlier workers and more trading opportunities, even though relatively your civ is fighting an uphill battle from the beginning because they have 2 cities, writing tech and all the other advantages.. For example these top YT players often have double the science you have at t60, they even get super early National College sometimes, plus they've built settlers and archers. I am genuinely impressed with this video and your others like the liberty examples. But I want to get better hence this post. Any clues?

I started making KZbin vids for Civ 5 very early in my own exposure to the game. So basically the later the video, the better I play (I'd like to think). At this point, this is one of my earlier vids. You are right though that in experienced hands, Deity can actually make the game easier in the ways you describe.

Note that those guys play multiplayer with a mod called NQMod, which drastically adjusts the game to be more equitable between not only civs, but various social policies, wonders, and religious tenants as well. Happiness is heavily affected. It's a great mod to play with even in single player, however, and I recommend you try it out! It makes the game even harder in many ways, which is quite fun

Depends partially on civ bias and map. Poland has a plains start bias.

It's required for a large number of other diplomatic interactions, like declarations of friendship and open borders.

On higher difficulties it is often a good idea to hold off giving your embassy to warmongering civs, it basically let's them know where you live. (this only really applies if they don't already know where your cities are.)

I can manage 3 cities no problem, the shit hits the fan when I set out to conquer, I start crushing on a pre-set path and soon my happiness plummets to -5, -6, -7.... I conquer like 3 city states on the path to an empire I want to destroy, I get to the empire and my army is for shit because the unhappiness penalty is making them weak I'm about to quit this game, the mechanics of it are fucked up

+Kersey Kerman these are unallied city states that I absorb in my world domination scenario and are very easy to conquer, the amount of unhappiness gotten from this simple and pure expansion (by pure I mean almost no troops lost, cities in background protected and everything within my borders functioning perfectly) is stupid as I acquire additional luxury resources, set up additional trading routes and generally make my empire stronger and better, yet unhappiness rises like silly, makes no sense, I am not razing these cities , lol I even improve what has previously been unimproved in their tiles BTW I don't mind the hate from the other empires, they are going down anyway, but the unhappiness of my people is totally unfounded and therefore plain dumb

Alen S. Whenever you conquer a city you kill off like half of their population, so the first big unhappiness boost is pretty understandable. The rest of the unhappiness is just due to the amount of population that constantly produces unhappiness just by them possibly not having certain buildings that make your citizens happy. Seriously, if you just work hard for your happiness from the start and have like 30 when you start your killing spree, it shouldnt be a problem at all.
