0:40)Shoulder straps.The army officers' hats had cords. An officer, without his coat, could be taken for an E-1. A retired US Cavalry Squadron Sergeant Major told me that it was easy to know who the 2nd Lieu Tenants were.They had blank shoulder straps because they have blank spaces between the ears. A 1st LT had a gold bar. In militia units, a 2nd LT may have a single bar on the collar or a stripe all around. 2 on a 1st LT. 3 on a captain. Some countries still use 3 collar bars for a Capt. Others have bars near the cuff. He mentioned "Austrian Knots". They were from cuff to elbow.6 strands for Colonels. Militia units decided what gear and uniforms were used. The 2nd Mississippi and the 7th New York Infantry Regiments wore the same gray uniforms.The North and South haad Zouaves. Colonels and lower ranks wore the same uniform. Commissioned US General Officers wore a different coat and hat.The boots were the same as the Infantry, Engineers, and Artillery wore.Hiram U. Grant,AKA US Grant, usually wore an unmarked coat.

In the 1870's the Infantry started to wear mounted overcoats, the longer cape was better insulation on the plains. Foot overcoats were also modified.

Black colour in the Bars is for Staff…. Staff is officers that never command men directly… such as Medical/paymaster/substance/quartermaster/signal corps, US military Rail Road and… generals and higher…. All those have black. Regulations say a Staff officer in a regiment may, at their option, wear dark blue. The Field Staff of a regiment (Colonel, Lt. Colonel and Major) would have regular colour shoulder boards. But the Staff Captain/Lt can have the dark blue. Btw, an officer commanding a company get $10 a month extra. Detached Staff officers also get the $10 a month extra. Pretty sure SS units officers would be Dark to light Blue colour within the bars. Red is Artillery (joke is brake lights), yellow Cavalry, sky/light blue infantry, dark green sharp shooters. The “Dark Blue” for everybody else (see originals not faded) is so dark, it looks black.
