@@ethanmcfarland8240 It's said that, all else being equal or close to it, it takes at least 3:1 odds to beat a determined defense. For most major battles before the Petersburg siege the Union bought at best 2:1 odds with the results being similar each time. The only major battle in the East that was different and came closest to breaking the ANV was Antietam. As for the ANV, they were simply worn down and whittled away while confederate forces elsewhere were simply poorly served. If they wanted a win by Atlanta, a last gamble of pulling everything into the ANV and striking north was their best chance. Grant may have been a war winner but his greatest advantage was in quantity (which they say has a quality all its own) which he leveraged mercilessly... for his ranks as well as the enemy. No doubt, had the overland campaign lasted another season with that level of losses, the Union would've been ready to talk peace.

@A_003 They are traitors because they lost. Treason under US law is exceptionally difficult to prove and adjudicate. Granted slavery is inherently morally wrong and the states should not have seceded and especially should not have attacked and ransacked federal forts before or after secession, nor as a reason for secession, is retaining slavery a valid reasoning, in my mind. However, I do not agree that a state that has entered into a contractual union under one sovereign national name should be disallowed for leaving said contract. But such an action would require way more than a few weeks to properly function: whereas to remove all aspects of the United Sovereign, funding, law enforcement etc. Even back in the 19th century it would have taken years to properly leave. Look at Britain and Northern Ireland wanting to leave the European Union and Greater Britain not wanting to leave. That example is a union within a union, but can still show how difficult it would have been; yet the steps needed to have lawfully severed ties. Now since it was decided by the supreme court at the time that secession is not allowed under the Constitution, we have to all accept that that is the precedence and thusly the States had no lawful way to secede. which is wrong, but not wrong enough to threaten violence, commit violence, nor seize property that is not your own. tldr: disallowing secession is bad contract law, imo. But more importantly Slavery is worse and states have no rights to federal supplies of forts, especially not after claiming to have left the Union.

@@josephg.1.130 lmaoo nah the US was one of the *last* countries to end slavery. Most of the rest of the world already saw slavery as either morally repugnant or just no longer economically useful given industrialization. Besides, the US didn't have the kind of global influence it has now - that only came about after 2 world wars. Before then, the US was seen as some backwater country only just beginning to develop its industrial might. It's true that many here in the US didn't see it as "bad" but getting rid of slavery didn't exactly open their eyes to the evils of slavery.

It's lame af. They made the guy say ni- to justify the robbery but they already had the guns. So they were always going to rob them. But all southerners are at minimum closeted racists as implied by the sketch. Lame af. If it was closer to reality they would have just rolled up and robbed them, no false pretenses.
