Body armor is legal for civilians. I do not recommend running around with it day to day. But when things go bad, like WROL, it would be good to have it in your system. Integrating it into your existing plate carriers is recommended since you will be carrying other stuff. For neighborhood security or check point you may have to run, it may save your life. In this video I will introduce you to some of the best, LIGHTEST body armor plates known to mankind and I secure special TNP pricing for you as well.//////////////////////www.firearmsprostore.com

Nutn - Not sure if you or TD checks comments on older vids like this, but the phenomenon you mention at 2:55 - things being made illegal by protectionists - is one of the greatest challenges to getting my systems squared away. On the one hand, I want to go by highest priority in a "tactically squared away" mindset. Get my AR's squared away, stockpile some ammo, etc... The other hand is I feel like I should make sure I go after things I worry about being made illegal first. It's damn frustrating. I currently have a bunch of rifles waiting for optics, lights, slings -- pistols waiting for decent holsters, trigger jobs, new sites, all that stuff, Because I feel I am forced to go after mags and stuff like body armor that is in greater danger of being made illegal in the near future. I want to enjoy this process, because in many ways it (squaring your systems away) can be a fun hobby, but common sense is always making me think of future availability first, and it can be severely limiting to current satisfaction.

Time for an update Nutn . $165 for level 3a that only stops pistol rounds? How about $65 for the AR500 level 3 that stops 7.62fmj and 556fmj and also 7.62 and 5.56 API. Sure they weigh 7.5lbs so your looking at 15lbs front and back but it's an armor everyman can afford. If you add the side armor it comes to a total of 20lbs. You can get all sides armored and a good plate carrier for under what it costs for a single DKX level 3 plate. Talk about value, yes I understand weight BUT cost is every bit as important as any armor is better then none.

Size and Weight Constraints apply here. You have 15 pounds for armor, a likely 8 pound rifle, weight for all the magazines, your pistol, and other gear you may want to carry. You're looking at easily 30 pounds of gear to carry around all day. Can you carry/run/fight with all that weight all day? Maybe, if you're really in shape (which is a good idea anyway) but even then you'll get fatigued. Why not invest some money reducing the weight of your loadout and improve your physical ability to fight, should that awful day come?

why not? Your not married are you? My point is some armor is better then no armor IF you can't afford $900. You can afford $130, yes it's heavier but at least you will have some. Yes if money is not an issue by all means the dkx is the lightest , just not the most affordable.

Thank you for making really good videos. I used to work at Tactical Tailor and we supplied carriers to LE, Military. I got a plate carrier and used soft for range time. I have seen several instences where ricochet hit folks when bullet jacket fraged. Most people have a medical deductible and one trip to the ER costs more that a set of 3A. I have my set up with a trauma plate that I could ADD in front of the soft.

+SmokeRingsPipeDreams You’re right. My life is worth a whole bunch, so I want a home built like the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in CO, an army of at least five thousand heavily-armed soldiers to guard me, a convoy of armored vehicles to transport me around town, and so on. Sadly, I can’t *realistically* afford that, so how much is my life *realistically* worth? With any purchase, even a small one, the benefit must be weighed against the cost. At the moment, the chance of me (notice myself only here) encountering a situation where chest (not body) armor would truly save my life is so very unlikely, a bullet-resistant vest just isn’t worth the cost to me. Even the video author’s vest hasn’t, so far, served it’s intended purpose (stopping a bullet at him), and I’m not around shooters nearly as often as he apparently is. Don’t get me wrong. If you want a vest and can afford it, it’s certainly not my place to dissuade you. However, it’s not really my place to persuade either.

Besides your whole argument is ignorant. That home you described and and all those armed soldiers LITERALLY would cost millions of dollars. I just recently bought an eagle spc rig with 2 ar 500 plates for only 250 bucks total. If you look online on classified sites like backpage or craiglist lots of guys sell them for a great price.

JohnnyBoyCali Oh, good grief. Stop twisting my words, jerk. I never said anything at all similar to “because the videos author hasn’t been shot at yet its not a useful product.” I simply pointed out the video author as one part of *MY* thinking of why a vest isn’t worthwhile *TO ME*. To repeat, I’m just not in situations, where a vest would be useful, often enough to justify the cost. That includes situations the video author used as examples. Actually, to expand on that (since you provided the opportunity), I really don’t see a whole lot of situations where a bullet-resistant vest would be useful *TO ME*. I’m certainly not going to run around the house or the yard, or even around town (stores, etc), with a vest on. I’m just not that paranoid yet. And, if a bad guy breaks in at night, there’s only a slim chance I’ll have time to dress up in tactical gear. And, no, I’m not sleeping in the vest either. In the end, it’d just be a waste of money - that conclusion should really give you conniptions. LOL.

Mr. Fancy... i must respectfully disagree. I literally agree with about 99.98% of your philosophy and thinking but on this one i must say i think going with the highest level of protection is best. If your gonna be a sheepdog that is mentally and emotionally committed to action to defend your fellow Americans/Constitution if and when that day should arises skimping on the body armor will be an unwise move. This is our life we are talking about here. Pony up a little more cash and go with the multi round level 4 with a rear trauma pad, back plate and side plates. Is it gonna suck moving in this kit... yes, but thats why its called" the suck"... If we ever have to strap on a plate carrier it means shit just got real and its time to stop bitching and go to worj. This same philosophy should extend to your rifle... the AR15 while fun to shoot is not a battle rifle or caliber. C39V2, Arsenal AK's, FAL, SCAR, some AR's etc... in 7.62. If your gonna spend the money why limit you capabilities on both defense and offense. I junked all of my AR15's and evolved to the 7.62... Lastly there are some really nice 100% American AK's on the market right now, check em out.

For soft body protection, I use two layers. The first being a Level IIA police type vest that I picked up at a pawnshop for $90 and the second being a never used PASGT vest over that. I also practice close quarter drills in my house wearing the PASGT vest while holding the Level II vest in my non-firing hand that is also supporting my pistol or shotgun and is a shield of sorts. They key is installing interior locked doors along with a good dog and or alarm system to buy time to put it all on.

I have changed the attack protocol to neck/head and upper thigh/hip joint/femoral artery shots. No one can take those shots and not be stopped for a few moments...enough for you to advance and finish the issue. Consider the presentation aspect with the target being turned sideways, offering up the exposed areas under the arm down through the rib cage. Take spine shots when presented with this aspect. Blasting away on plates is essentially useless...as is using toy guns like 5.56/.223.

+Eric Miesbauer I hear you, it is definitely expensive. I've seen tests done on old soft armor, there's pics floating around of 11 year old vests stopping multiple 9mm rounds and a 12 gauge slug from 2 feet away. So you may check into used armor on places like Ebay. It might not be the best, but it's better than none and should be much cheaper.

Take a look at how steel targets react to getting hit by bullets. They fall down but do not go flying with any significant energy. Sometimes they even fail to fall down if they are a bit heavy for the caliber used. As for ceramic tiles, they certainly can't be trusted to stop bullets but on the other hand some have stopped some calibers when tested in layers or when backed by another material. Mythbusters tested some fabric backed 1 inch bathroom tile in layers and it did stop some calibers.

As to your first point, 20 year old kevlar has been tested to handle the full threat level it was originally rated for. Expiration only occurs with moisture contact. If the inner panel was dry underneath the moisture seal outer, then the kevlar shouldn't expire. Any warranties are legally obligated to exist and are around 5 years simply for the sake of convenience.

Yes, they do. I'm running a standard plate in the back, and a shooter's cut in the front. In regards to side plates, I just ordered two 5"x7" plates for the side pockets. They are an inch higher than the standards, but I was worried that the 6"x8" wouldn't fit due to thickness (don’t want to modify the MOPC; will be ran with the longer dimension going vertical). Even though there was a long wait, I'm very happy with the Level 3 DKX plates. Thanks to nutnfancy for putting this out there.

There are some high speed videos available of steel plates being struck by bullets. There is virtually no deformation. Actually, a heavy blunt object can easily carry as much foot pounds as a firearm projectile. A 20 lb sledge hammer swung at 60 ft/sec produces about 1,100 ft/lbs. A .357 mag produces about 600 ft/lbs. M855 5.56mm produces about 1,200 ft/lbs.

Drop-ability is a very useful and underrated attribute of a plate, especially in a tactical plate. If you're having to slide around, hit the deck tacking cover, slamming into concrete etc... the last thing on your mind is the damage/integrity of your plate, even though it could prove vital to survival.

These would be a great backup option in case your primary plate was damaged by either rough handling or even taking a few hits. Less of a concern with the polyethylene plates which are pretty durable for rough handling anyways but definitely a concern with ceramic plates which can be seriously damaged just by dropping them on the floor.

The "trauma plate", at least when they were newer products twenty years ago when I was still a cop, were not intended to stop bullets. They were a supplement to the bullet-resistant kevlar and were intended to protect against pointed weapons like knives, which can punch right through kevlar. Perhaps modern kevlar is now more resistant to knives, but that's what the metallic plates were originally used for.

I carry a M&P 9c. I was debating between the 9c and 45c originally. Decided on the 9c due to my other 2 considerations. Cost to practice and capacity. I also own a 1911 in 45, and it definitely hurts the wallet to shoot. 9mm is much more affordable. And as a defense pistol, its something you are going to want to practice with a lot. As far as capacity the 45c has 8rds and the 9c has 12. Doesnt seem like a big difference, being only 4rds, but percentage wise its quite significant.(cont)

Hey Nutnfancy, I think you need a clarification... Spalling is not only fragmentation material from the back of the plate, but "splash" off the front of the plate from the impacting round itself. Hard plates, depending upon construction, can cause a round to disintegrate upon impact, just like if one was shooting a steel plate. If the impacted target is a chest plate, typical spall wounds could include fragmentation injuries to the lower chin/jaw and forearms.

Nutnfancy may not care about bulk too much, but with prior service I can tell you, when you're at the range or in the prone in a fire fight, you don't want a 1/2" of material between you and the ground, let alone an 1", not only does it make it more difficult to get into a proper shooting position, but without padding it can be quite fatiguing if not down right painful. So if you expect to be shooting from the prone a lot, consider a thinner material option for your level 3 or 4 needs.

Some fatoids: Dyneema if you think you will encounter water, swimming etc. UHDP's usually are very water resistant and have a density close or below that of water (you float). Best material for a marine environment. Polyaramid (Kevlar) is much heat resistant and is usually i component in FR clothing. However the protection level may be lowered when contact with water. *If you get hit by a riffle round when wearing IIIA you will most likely sustain more injures than when wearing no bodyarmor

Note that nonhybrid plates that are pure Dyneema/UHMWPE are NOT rated to stop XM855/M855 green tip SS109 light steel penetrator 5.56 NATO. Those plates require hybridization with an outer layer of ceramic or steel in order to defeat those rounds. Examples are the AMI TAC3S that uses MARS 300 (AR650) steel on top of Dyneema or the Tencate TenH/TAP Gamma+ plates that use ceramic oxide/carbide on top of Dyneema.

They were affordable and although they are 7.5lbs each I have to just grit my teeth and keep pushing. Prone, to kneeling to standing it is an insane work out. Another reason I have chosen steel plates is because they are multi hit rated. I planned on buy the soft armor sides but when I watched a video of slug rounds vs soft armor I decided the extra weight would be worth it. Great video. It was educational, not just a lecture on your gear and you.

The 5.7 and the 4.6×30mm used in the HK MP7, even the military rounds (except the MP7 is a proprietary round EG no civilian round) are both about the equivalent of 17 winmag. Hence why the P90 and MP7 have such high cyclic rates and large ammo capacity and their only used for CQB type stuff. In my army reserve job Im a weapons instructor. We teach the MP7 and have tested the P90. Their basically high velocity varmint rounds hence why you need to shoot a lot at a high rate of fire when engaging.

If I'm wearing hard armor (which is invariably less comfortable than soft) I'm gonna just pony up the weight difference and get rifle protection. If I'm wearing soft armor I'd like for it to potentially be concealable (hence my plate carrier carries plates, and my soft armor is concealable and can be worn with an independent chest rig)

OK yes if someone is shooting at you from an upward angle there is "chance" that a round could slip between the plates and penetrate the armor. (greater the angle higher the risk) I believe that the benefits of mobility and more coverage out-weight this risk. This is just my opinion but the only serious flaw I see with Dragonskin is the weight.

Nope. They just released them with a protective coating called Line-X that eliminates spalling and frag. Coating is standard on all new plates, or if you have old plates they have a sleeve that you can fit over.

Nutn, thanks for the review (very informative) and pricing. As other TNP'ers have already pointed out in the comments, pure Dyneema plates do NOT defeat M855 (mild steel core 5.56). What makes this such a significant issue is that MASSIVE amount of this ammo has been sold as surplus over the years all over the US. If it weren't for M855, I would be all over this deal--like NOW. Regrettably, that ammo is the monkey in the wrench.

After watching your review, I placed an order for a set of the DKX pistol plates from PFI. I was told it would be 10-14 days from order ( ordered and paid on 3/19). Well I still got no plates and no reply from email inquiry twice and a phone call and message left to them went unanswered. Just FYI.

Up to level 3A (large pistol caliber protection) is legal in the U.S. and can be exported. Levels 3 and 4 (rifle caliber protection) are also legal in the U.S. but are subject to export restrictions. Convicted felons are just about the only ones not allowed by law to buy body armor. The best readily available body armor product I know of is Goldshield based armor which is very light and thin compared to traditional kevlar vests but expensive. Check it out and judge for yourself.

Excellent review as usual! I run heavy level 4 rifle plate currently and train to use it but its hheeaavvyy regardless of physical training. However I run plates that can defeat what I'm going to carry in a WROL situation. Which I'll definitely have some AP rounds on me. Certainly going to look into this though, thanks!

Shoot, that's amazing that you can have that level of protection in something that lightweight. The sapi plates we wear weigh about the same as that plate you showed early in the video. Throw in two side sapis and you get a really heavy rig. Hell, you could even stack those and get better protection with less weight.

As far as I know it wont give any rifle protection, even lvl 3 and 4 plates usually require lvl 3a soft armor behind them to actually be considered lvl 3 or 4. Other than stand alone lvl 3 or 4.

Also according to the BATF has their own definition of what is AP for rifles there are exceptions as it depends on the metal type, thickness and core material etc So what you may think is AP or advertised as such may not be according to the BATF and what makes it even more confusing is it varies by state as well BUT this only goes for rifle rounds and most I see are not true AP military rnds. But for pistols it's a out right fed offense, it does not matter what it may contain so be aware.

Just put in an order for some body armor for work from quartermaster. Yesterday I got an e-mail from them saying they needed proof of occupation. Wasn't a problem but if your not LE or private security QM won't sell it to you.

Thanks for the updated body armor vid Nutn. I'm stoked to hear you've changed your philosophy regarding civilian ownership. The purpose of the 2nd amendment was to protect a citizen's right to EQUAL armament of an infantry soldier. The government does not deserve special exemptions. Keep up the good work bud.

In the footage the level III plate was shown surviving a regular 30-06 round, that is pretty comparable to 7.62x54R. It's still just ball, not AP.

I know right, its ridiculous.. Be safe while out on the lake and always carry a long gun and a side arm in the boat. After all it is legal to carry fire arms in your boat in the great state of Texas Glad to hear you made it out of your sticky situation, have a nice one!

I have no experience with these but I do have experience with body armor. In my law enforcement job we have a vest with one layer of soft plate that stops pistol rounds (about 9 mm), but it does not protect very well against slashes with knife, or hits with baseball bats. So on top of the soft plate we have a metal plate as well for that purpose. So based on that information and that the plates in these videos are hard, I think they will protect well against slash and penetrations with knife.

Great Video Nutn, I understand your reasoning on not running the plates all of the time because of the weight/mobility issues that may come up, but I like to run my armor with the plates in just so I can train the same way I fight, so I can get my body stronger and accustomed to conducting drills and movements with the extra weight. I think not running the plates may be a disadvantage. Just my two cents though still a great and informative video.

I really appreciate your reviews and its products like these that I would have never found without your assistance that I’m truly appreciative of. Hope we never need them...

to fracture one of those and you won't likely get as good of results with level 3 ceramic as you would with level 3 steel. Though the trade off is weight obviously, steel is gonna weigh more, which makes you slower, while the ceramic is fragile and fairly bulky. As for Polyethylene, like the stuff DKX sells, I dono, from the looks of it, it actually catches the bullet inside the casing, meaning less chance for ricochet, but also higher chance of penetration through. All in all as Nutnfancy said

While steel or even titanium (if you can afford it), tends to collapse or completely deflect, creating relatively small concave craters around the impact zone without affecting the structural integrity of the rest of the plate like a ceramic one would. However, unlike a ceramic plate, steel/titanium plates can also deflect the round completely without deforming, which may not be desirable as you will not be able to control where the now massively deformed round is sent after impact.

There seems to be a lot of new Level IIIA armor coming out. AR500 Carbon Nanotube, Spartan Armor UHMWPE hard and semi-flexible armor are a few examples. Both companies have options at $300 (or less) for a pair of plates. Any plans on testing some of the new products?

having two of the IIIA plates back to front would be a interesting test to see how effective it would be, but the cost would be prohibitive, maybe get a kickstarter style funds collection to get this test done? see just how effective it would be? I'm sure the TNP can help and to see this test done by nutnfancy, I'd contribute for sure.

Yup body armor is a must in any carbine or pistol class. I use one for work as I work in LE and heavier armor in the military reserves. 5 years ago I got hit by a new German army recruit where a 5.56 round ricocheted of a rock and hit me in the lower left of my torso. Even in US Ive been to ranges where new shooters actually have shot other people by mistake on the line. My 2 daughter's have started entering in pistol competitions and they wear em. Nowadays you can hardly feel em level depending

The 3A definitely won't and it's unlikely the level 3 will as usually a level 4 plate deals with armour penetrating rounds, which is what a steel core round is. The Level 3 will stop standard rifle rounds and pistol rounds (i.e. your standard FMJ rounds.)
