I feel like this theme really captured humanity's struggle throughout its history between progression for the good of mankind (during the escalating notes) and between the battle of corruption and destruction (the deescalating notes). But the collective will for peace and progress is stronger and becomes more prominent notes in the song as it goes on.

@MidasRK1 I think you're confused with scales and instruments; the pentatonic scale is pretty frequent in this song. For instance, from 4:08-4:20 the song follows a strict pentatonic scale. The same theme shows up several times in the woodwinds and low brass. Debussy composed countless songs on the piano (100% European instrument) but used pentatonic scales. Clair de Lune and First Arabesque are great examples. Its the scales and harmonies that make the music; not the instruments.

I have no clue as to what all of you people are saying. You're all acting as if you're music geniuses when you haven't got the first clue about music. If you like Baba Yetu, go listen to it on another page. CIV V's theme song is excellently written. It gives an eerie feeling with the low strings and when the muted horns swoop in I get chills. It combines Asian themes and Western themes to produce a great piece of music that has a lot of culture. Simply put, it sounds epic.
