Civilization: Beyond Earth - Tutorial - How To Start

I've heard some questions get repeatedly asked this weekend as to how to start a new game of civilization. What should a player be going for? How can you tell a good start vs a bad.
This tutorial should give you great advice on some very nice starting ideas and why they're so good.

I liked the starting location with the nest three hex away. (1) Build fence (2) Buy the nest hex and avoid Aliens until they turn blue (3) Go Harmony. This strategy will spawn lots of friendly Aliens that will vex your Purity/Supremacy opponents. They will not be able to clear the nest without declaring war on you. Plus it will allow you to explore the planet without worrying about Alien attacks. I usually have to wait till Midgame to employ this strategy. Being able to start this strategy so soon would be a great advantage!

I came here looking for a tutorial. You explained a lot in the beginning (thank you), but the last 15 mins were more watching you play and not understanding what is going on.

wow, a really good tutorial, thank you ! I am playing the free version this weekend on steam (Jan 17th-18th) before I watched this tutorial. I was surrounded by 2 nests ! I invested in armies, and result, my AI totally advanced and me lacking behind... as nests respawn!!

Well now, things aren't as black and white as you put them during the pregame setup.. -You could definitely go for the Engineers and couple that with a hill start for a good production bonus in the Capital. Aristocrats aren't really that bad either, the gold is quite hand in purchasing buildings/colonists/workers faster - All of the spacecraft options are viable. You can reveal the coasts and go for some sea based trade routes for more profit, the 100 energy will net you a purchased colonist faster and the revealed Alien nests goes really well with the Might virtue tree and just farm some aliens near their nests for some easy science. Retrograde thrusters is the safest option imho though, as it can give you a better Capital location and is easiest to use - Also Polystralia man, 2 more traderoutes early game are insanely strong, especially against higher difficulty AIs cause you can get a lot of science from them Also, i strongly recommend newer players to turn on the Tile Yield option (from the eyeball icon on the minimap) to ON as they can actually see what tiles are good when placing cities. And for newer players, FOOD is the most important thing in the game next to science. When you decide what hexes you want in your city borders, always go for the most food you can find.

Some of what you said is true, but not for new players which is the aim of this video. A good, strong, easy way to begin learning the game is what a new player needs. I would say energy for purchasing units probably doesn't fall under that category since that is a rather huge investment early on and you need to know what your purchasing, be it tiles, buildings, units, and why you're doing it. That's probably more for someone who has played the game once before, in my opinion. Thrusters I still say are more for multiplayer than single player. If you don't like a start, you can always re-game. The two trade routes can be quite good, but that is also a bit on the rng side. I've seen starts where you don't have multiple options for trade routes just due to bad luck. And if you're playing on higher difficulties anyway, then you're probably not a new player ^^. As for food, I of course agree with that. I did emphasize that in the video when I showed how quickly a city can grow depending on the amount around you.

dwyrin Oh, i didn't realize this was targeted for complete beginners to civ. If someone has played some civ5, i doubt purchasing settlers/workers is not already ingrained in their blood though :) Also, about the retrograde thrusters, you are definitely right that you can re-roll, I literally didn't even think about it cause I never do.. Feels like cheating.. :) To be fair, from what I've played of Beyond Earth, even Apollo difficulty is manageable with a less than optimal start. The AI seems weaker than civ5's Immortal, let alone Diety. I won't even mention civ4's AI... Have fun with the series!

Yeah there are already mods to make the game harder and everyone is waiting for patches to come out to do the same. Thanks though! Despite all that i am quite enjoying it so far.
