Honestly, there isn’t a single victory type Pericles is outright bad at, since he has so many suzerainships he can pursue any victory type they encourage. He just doesn’t need to worry about the civic tree, since his culture will always be so high.

Stephen Drummond wouldn’t acropolises be the right term? If you say acropoli, wouldn’t that mean the original singular term should be acropolum or acropola? Also how does acropoleis work? Just curious.

Saikhnaa “Acropoleis” comes from the Greek, where singular “polis” becomes plural “poleis” in the nominative

Ah OK. Thanks!
@V0r4xiz6 жыл бұрын
Acropoli is simply wrong. The word is neither Latin, nor does it end in -us. So -i cannot and will not ever be its plural form. Acropolises is really bad form and ignorant but not wrong. Acropoles/eis is the correct pluralization, the former being the anglicanized form and the latter being the Greek form.

I feel lucky to have picked up Civ 6 with a focus on Culture. I hear it's the second hardest (next to faith) to win with, but every game I've played - even with multiplayer/allies, I've managed to take the cake. If you can swing the Potala Palace and Forbidden City, then you'll have THREE Wildcard Policies... It's literally wild.

Here's a thought: rush mysticism. Plato's Republic grants you an extra Wildcard policy slot, and mysticism has two policies which give 2 great scientist or great prophet points per turn. This would give Pericles an early lead in science or in founding a religion without having to build Stonehenge. I could be wrong though. I'm not quite sure how valuable craftmanship and foreign trade are for a civilization compared to an early great scientist or prophet. Would be interested to hear thoughts on this.
@WizoIstGott5 жыл бұрын
You simply can´t build stonehenge on deity (or at least i can´t), so the great prophet points are allways worth going for. You want to have a religion so you can have the option to go for mont st. michel and reliquaries for some sweet tourism. Great scientist points are only really worth it early when you can get hypatia. So yeah, Mysticism is great on pericles. Foreign Trade should be next to get missions done with city states that want a trade route, the sooner you get that 5% boost to culture the better it is.

The problem with Acropolis is that it has to sit on a hill...which can make it annoying to place and even more annoying to land manage district placements and so on. On Deity, AIs always kill off city states, so he's pretty useless.

Great video! On the facebook-page 'Civilization community' we recently had a poll about all wonders, enabling people to vote for each one whether they'd be tier 1, 2 or 3. Turned out that the wonders giving extra policy slots (Alhambra, Potala Palace, Big Ben and Forbidden City) where the most popular, so the Greek ability to have an extra wildcard slot (obviously the best category) might be one of the best single abilities in the game. Oh and uhm... Suppose you had to choose a new leader for an existing civilization (just because you like the Civ-abilities, but the current leader not so much) which Civ would it be? (And maybe, what kind of new leader?)
@RatchetSly5 жыл бұрын
Spain - A leader based less on religion and more on colonization and gold or loyalty? Or, for another take, something based on the Spanish Moors? Would fit the other continent flavour of their base ability well, as the Moors came from Africa to the Iberian peninsula. Georgia - Mostly because Tamar's leader ability seems too easily played around, and does very little if done so. I admittedly know little of their history. Persia - I'm not too sure what an alternate would be - I've not brushed up on Persian history - but something less backstabby than Cyrus and more culture/gold/religion focused, as the Persians were followers of Zoroastrianism. Russia - Something more military/loyalty focused, perhaps? Based on the USSR, of course. Rather than Peter's inherent catchup mechanic. Norway - These poor guys need a rework in general. Religion/culture focus with minor military bonuses would work as an alternate flavour for them. Germany - A more diplomatically-focused German leader could work, although that would admittedly be straying much closer to the modern day than the devs likely want, since this suggestion is more based on their position in the EU.

Pericles is S is domination too. Hoplites are extremely overpowered early, making him stronger than Macedon. You can expand quickly, get lots of campuses up, and overwhelm neighbors as game goes on. Use loyalty to grab a handful as you continue to expand.
@ninjashot374 жыл бұрын
I'd personally argue that he should get higher rankings for science and religion due to being able to almost instantly get late game governments faster than anyone else, such as theology, can make winning religious games relatively simple and the extra wildcard slot means you don't need political philosophy to get the extra great prophet points for a religion. For science Greece is almost always guaranteed to get to the late game policy cards that boost science first, though it does fall off later in the game.

@TheSaxyGamer6 жыл бұрын
They can work decently if they're adjacent to another hoplite, yes. With the adjacency combined with their bonus vs. cavalry units, they would be at 45 Combat Strength against a Knight's 47, so they do a fairly decent job

You mention Kilwa Kisiwani, but not Apadana? If your capital can build a lot of wonders, that can get you a whole lot of envoys. Here's an image from a game on King difficulty with Pericles, where I have ten wonders in Athens, most built after Apadana: imgur.com/a/3mTo6QK On higher difficulties, it's obviously harder to get as many wonders, but even then there might be some ancient or classical wonders that no one wants, and if they're still available in, say, the renaissance era, it's probably a pretty cheap way to get yourself another two envoys.

You underrated Pericles! But you are not the only one. Nearly everywhere you check for Tier lists Pericles lands somewhere average. I highly disagree that he is not versatile. You have no special abilities that boost science, but there are some neat science boosts on your civics tree. Regardless of what game you play it usually ends up either in an early territorial war or in sim city eco-whoring where production and high science overall till certain milestones counts. If you have enough cities with pericles you will have a high amount of envoys extra. You can go on 6 envoys at almost all science/economy/culture/production city states that you find. And you can outbid all others. That alone is a big advantage over other civs. And not just for your culture play. In the past I picked him often in multiplayer rounds. At times where other equally strong players are around 120 science pericles can be easily at 300 culture and 80-100 science at the same time. Getting merchant republic, Nationalism, Mobilization and Democracy MUCH earlier than the others will boost the eco/sim-city game a lot. The culture victory is too fragile for me in multiplayer games. One other player going for some culture as well and you have nearly no chance to get it before someone else gets his science victory. So powering through the civics tree you will have the ultimate cards to pick when globilization is researched. If the culture-whoring went well that is around the time the first players researched rocketry. Once globilization is researched you can pick the +10% science per suzerain card as well as the card that gives you +5 production per trade route. Together with Arsenal of democracy you can get +11 to +14 production per trade route then. This will make your space port city the single most producing city in the game which is essential for science victory AND you will have more science than anybody else. So the only counter to Pericles for me is war. You can't beat him on late game with any other faction, except war stuff. And nuclear war is not always an option as it comes late.
@TheSaxyGamer6 жыл бұрын
I did not place Pericles near average, as A-tier is the second highest tier. C-tier is my "average" tier. Although those things that you pointed out can be true, they are more of a "perfect scenario" type of thing and rarely every play out in an actual game on deity. While you can indeed get an incredibly high amount of culture, keep in mind that the AI on deity gets +32% extra culture for free (as they get +32% to all yields except food, gold, and production). This means that you will only pass the AI"s bonus once you have become the suzerain of 7 city-states. This means that you often will not be too far ahead, and the AI will normally still gain a pretty big advantage over you early on. In regards to their versatility, they simply don't have enough things unique to them to help their versatility. Sure they can rush policies, but any other civ in the game could also rush those same policies and receive the same benefits, so that doesn't really make Pericles stand out. And the rather unfortunate thing about all of this is that even if you do manage to get suzerain of a lot of city-states, it is almost guaranteed that the AI will take them as the game progresses. In a recent game I played on stream, I believe I had 12 or 14 city-states in the game at the start, and by turn 200 there were only 6 or so left, which further got taken until there were only 3. Pericles is definitely an above-average civ, but his total reliance on city-states keeps him from being top-tier.

The Saxy Gamer Okay, my focus was different. A few friends and I usually play competitive. So against each other. Or in teams vs diety AIs. So there is plenty of room and no alone vs 10 diety AIs. Which will leave some city states. Also the map type would matter. On island maps you will have a higher percentage of the City states surviving. I wrote this from my mobile phone. I hope yt handles it right
