Sauron's power doesn't just come from manipulation. He was a powerful sorcerer, probably second only to Morgoth in the black arts. He had a powerful will as one the most powerful maiar and could easily dominate the minds of others. Lastly being a maiar, he could shapeshift and take on any form he pleased for physical combat and combined with his powerful will, makes him a deadly opponent for almost anyone.

Morgoth used a lot of his power to inject evil into Arda, but he lost a lot of Ainurian attributes (he felt pain and couldn't assume a fair form, for example). Tolkien, even though his writings created or standardized many tropes of modern epic fantasy, didn’t completely come up with every single idea 100% in his own mind. He was a huge mythology, literature, and history buff, and many of the stories in his world were inspired by his love of classic works, history, and occasionally his own life and contemporary events (which is one reason why people should chill out when newer fantasy shows some inspiration from Tolkien, because as long as it’s respectful and stands as it’s own creative work instead of being a shameless ripoff, then it’s the same sort of reference that Tolkien himself did when writing his world). For example, the origin story of Tolkien’s world drew heavily from various mythologies and religions. The Fall of Gondolin was one of the first things he wrote, and was an outlet for his experiences in WW1. Don’t quote me on this, but I’m pretty sure I’ve read somewhere that the story of Turin (and more broadly of Hurin and his descendants), along with Beren and Luthien, was one of Tolkien’s attempts to bring some Shakespearean tragedy into his writings. There’s definitely some traces of darkly ironic tragedy to be found in Turin’s story. Being able to see the bits of inspiration and nods to older literature, fairy tales, and myths, across dozens of different short tales inspired by those classics, all set in his own made-up world and all forming a cohesive and deep history spanning thousands of years, really enhances the Silmarillion for me. That’s the reason that my appreciation for it grows with every reread, it’s so fun to think about. The Silmarillion was dozens of small stories written over many years, often out of order, each with its own writing process and inspiration, that as a whole created the mythological/worldbuilding basis that Tolkien referenced as a sort of ancient history/backstory when creating the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Only after his death were all these writings arranged into a the Silmarillion (which is actually 3 or 4 “books” including the Silmarillion in one package). The Silmarillion might not have the better-polished, more plot-driven structure of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but to me it’s infinitely more interesting to revisit and dissect. Almost every little tale in that massive fantasy-bible has some sort of real-world, mythological, or classical literature inspiration or reference. I read the book in middle school, and it’s been so rewarding to revisit it every now and then to see what new details I can pick out with every reread as I go through college literature and mythology courses. I love the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, but Silmarillion is easily my favorite work of Tolkien’s just for how deep and interesting it is, both within the confines of its own canon and as a piece of literature to think about.
