I do have to play around with the demo more... being a big fan of Blood so far I really like Cultic... but I have noticed trouble with my eyes picking up on distant enemies. I've been running along and all of a sudden they are in my face because they just aren't visually registering to my eyes. I'm not sure right now what to blame more, the colour pallet or the pixelized art style. I can't say I've ever had this problem before with any other game. Maybe if there was an option to toggle model outlines?

@@faceless2302 It was probably put in for playtesting purposes, for times when you gotta just kill immediately for whatever reason, or to get through to whatever part. You can things like that in the betas of a lot of games, or just tucked away in the files. For instance there's a "Debug Pistol" that exists in the game files of Fallout : New Vegas, and it's just the regular 9mm pistol, but it does like 9999 points of damage per shot. The player was never supposed to have it or anything like it in the finished game.

If you've played a few video games you've probably explored most of hell by this point. Between Doom, Diablo, Devil May Cry and all their imitators, few genres have been spared. Hell isn't "played out" by any means, but new games need to get really innovative with it OR just accept "it's been done" and just focus on polishing up their execution. For the former, you've got Ultrakill creating uniquely themed layers that each provide their own flavour, few of which are "traditional" video game Hell. For the latter you have Doom 2016 and Eternal, which give us the classic "blood and fire and brimstone and spikes and skulls" but focus on delivering it with gorgeous visuals and technically amazing gameplay.

Problem I have with many of these new retro shooters is that the Doom, Quake, and Build modding communities have all created so many visually impressive and mechanically complex works that play and look much better than lot of this early access stuff. Shame about the 3DR buy out, not thrilled by the continued consolidation of all games studios under just a few companies.

It's a shame so many of these demos are starting to feel repetitive. If there's one thing I can give the "first wave" of boomer shooters, it's that despite taking obvious influence from many retro FPS games, they all had their own distinct style and twists. Some of these games are so janky they're starting to remind me more of high-effort asset flips that are each just different combinations of all the same design ingredients, Taco Bell style.

(Sewer Count actually sounds like a really filthy vampire lord, so look forward to that in whatever game I make that ends up having a sewer level) *5:* Cultic: aka YUP I'm getting this. This looks very Bloody, and right up my alley. AND it has occasional Zed Time? *6: Project. Warlock. 2.* Another very much YUP game. Also, the game's sprites mess with my mind, since I thought they were 3D at first, but it turns out that they are indeed sprites. *7:* Kur looks kinda fun too. And VERY Aussie. *8:* I've already got Dread Templar, mostly on Civvie's earlier recommendation on Twitter, and it felt like a grand old time. Though I feel like that Stun Bomb weapon would be better off bound to a grenade key, since I never really used it all that much due to how it functions.

Hmm, I liked Project Warlock II. in this video, tbh, the first one didn't get my attention. Cultic would be very nice, but that's too much pixel for me already. Retro FPS creators, please understand, that old games' charm were not the ultrasheit graphics, but the fact, that they could not do better, so they had to be creative instead. So a new retrolike game's best part won't be the ultrasheit graphics either. Dread templar looked nice too. I'll try it once for sure.

I wanted to love Project Warlock 2 and Celtic but they put me off for similar reasons. Both try and emulate Build games despite lacking any interactivity in their environments. More importantly, the demo level in each case feels long for the sake of it. Unlike the best levels from old school and retro shooters, which build up their encounters to a climax and are designed around a particular idea or landmark, Cultic and PW2’s demos meander and repeat themselves.

As much as I love the classics, and wished for more of games like them in the past, I'm a getting bit tired of the boomer shooters. All of them goes for the same look, pixelated, blocky, reduced colors with filters, but they also have a lot of modern visual effect and often gameplay unlike any of the old games. It's like making a black and white horror film, but you do the monsters with CGI, use heavy metal music, introduce superheroes into the plot, etc. Take Cultic for example. Do you remember playing Blood in 64-color EGA mode with a dynamic palette? Yeah me neither. I'm not sure what to expect from the late 90s/early 2000s era of boomer shooters, if we get to that point.
