Never cared for HL2, shit is way too boring and half baked compared to the first game. Less variety and choice through the entire experience.

Why there is no Episode 3 or HL 3??? Well, nobody tell Gabe that after 2 there is a 3, like in HL3, or HL2:E3, or Portal 3, or L4D3!

34:29 The poison zombies don't respawn infinitely at any point in Ravenholm. There's one area in the streets where regular zombies do, but the poison and fast zombies spawn in at certain points, making it seem like they're spawning in at regular intervals if one's progressing at the intended pace -- but they're not endless.

It's a tremendous relief for me to hear that even Civvie nosiders Max to be difficult as hell. Replaying it just now I thought that maybe I just really suck at video games.

So, I have questions about the thought process behind the game: 1) Since when is flem (properly spelled 'phlegm') the antithesis to breakfast? How did they get from here to there? 2) It would appear, if you peek below the doctor in the intro's coat, that the Chex cereal shape is... like, the people's exoskeleton? In which case, how is picking up Chex a boost to the armor? Or the doctor professor is wearing armor under his coat? So, he put his labcoat on over the top to make sure everyone knew he was a professor doctor? It's not like the Flemoids are going to care, they're trying to kill the people?

I completely get why people get frustrated by the whole "One Free Man" messiah complex being shouted at them throughout the game and feeling like it ruins Gordon's (and by extension the player's) "everyman" image. But I for one always found it a funny, ironic part of the whole subtext. Everyone treats Gordon like he knows what he's doing and what's the best course of action at every given time... but you basically don't and the game being completely linear you (and Gordon) just do what the task immediately ahead of you is and things just work out. And Gordon being treated the most capable person and given help by everyone around him also makes it a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy: with so many resources being thrown at you by the resistance (including a fricking power armor just being kept in storage for some reason) of course you're going to be the best one of them all.

Having an episode be based around a song from Meet The Feebles really made me realize what a completely overlooked and unknown masterpiece it is. And that damn Pentagon Wars or whatever it is HBO Original movies back when those weren't really good, damn dude we're probably the same age.

While I love the innovations of the Episodes I still despise how they killed the whole thing around gman putting you in into a situation for obscure reasons and in the end pulling you out. You could do an entire series around that concept, everytime changing the setting and the time. I think Marc Laidlaw liked that idea too, so I could see how they wrote themselves into a corner by the end of Episode Two, remember how the story, written by Laidlaw, is all in service of the game, not the other way around

I actually like, no LOVE the airboat section. It's frustrating like nothing else in this game and feels tense. It's almost like a glimpse into the fact that Valve doesn't actually love you and it's all a farce and it makes my joyless little black cynic heart sing. BTW, Civvie, thank you, for Meet the Feebles. It's amazing

ok i know the diss on the bridge setpiece was likely bait to get someone to write multiple paragraphs, but....... to me, the part where the music starts is just utter beauty. It feels like a moment of respite Gordon can take from just, everything. The framing of a seemingly endless serene view of the ocean builds on top of this. It's a place you could just sit down and stare out at the view, look at the birds flying around. As you move across the broken pieces of supports the bridge shakes as a train rides above, almost as if it shakes the whole world, signifying something much larger than you, there are forces in this world that limit you, that control you, that are stronger than you. It makes you feel so small and humble, yet it gives you a feeling of peace, and of determination, this beautiful world will only be torn to further ruin if you do not fight, as the Combine soldiers across the bridge begin firing at you you realize, if you do not put your best foot forward, this view will become a barren wasteland, this world will be but a massive planet sized graveyard. Everyone you know, everyone you care about, will die a painful death. This is why you must try, because everything is at stake if you do not. If you feel like you don't have reason to play the game, you don't care about the characters maybe, maybe this will give you a reason to keep going. The platforming may be "bad", but it doesn't take away from the moment for me. It's an amazing moment, to me at least.

Civvie doesn't really go for reflective atmosphere. He goes for gameplay, defined as shooting (because it's an FPS), and anything that actively prevents the occurrence of shooting is getting in the way of the point of the game. He praised Quake's atmosphere (particularly Trent Reznor's soundtrack contributing heavily to foster that atmosphere) but had nothing to say about HL2's because he dislikes that HL2's atmospheric moments are more passive. Notice that his praise of Ravenholm is more about the design decisions that frame it (insistence on the gravity gun being the game's actual workhorse weapon aside) than the actual experience of progressing through it. Same deal.

Thank you for introducing this awesome game to me. I'm just bummed I never heard about it or played it when it came out. Definitely the best boomer shooter back in the day.
