Another hovelax banger, the chariot info bar colors represent the teams/groups. The greens and blues were a major cause of the rebellion in Constantinople during Justinians reign due to their rowdy behavior during chariot games.

Ah yes, that riot. 30 000 people killed and a quarter of the city burned to the ground, all because one person started shouting the N-word.

Justinian and Theodora, there the last great Emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire. By the time we get out start date, that Empire is dead. Egypt was lost, and the Empire was reduced from what it was and it's potential, to a fading artifact. Chariot racing, by this time, is mostly out of fashion. The most important element in Byzantine politics now, is meddling of Venice and trade disputes. Syracuse was sacked by the Arabs, ending the ancient "marble" trade network, what once linked the entire Roman Empire, and the realm is in a social crisis, politically unstable, and at war. There is one last great dynasty, about to rise... The Komemnoi... The last final hurrah, before oblivion. That marshal dynasty will stabilize Imperial possessions in Anatolia and the Balkans, for about a hundred years, before they too fail, and the Empire enters it final twilight. Fascinating period if history. Trade is an important element in all of it. How to accurately represent it, without Italian City states, and trade... Not sure.

@@theflame5919 ERE got other golden ages after Justinian & Theodora. Like the "Byzantine Golden Age" one century after them during 641 to 1025 ... Basil 2 , Alexios 1, Heraklios, .. They are a lot of great emperors during medieval time. And diverse important elements other than meddling of Venice and trade disputes. Like pushing into east Europe, and converting them to orthodoxy. Pushing back the Sicilian Normans which settled colonies in greece, etc ... And other influencial events. Komemnoi are only from 1081 à 1185. Justinian and Theodora are ruling 527 to 565... There are lot of interesting centuries between them. The oblivion started with the sack of the 4th crusade which irreparably weakened the Empire in 1204. Even the poeple of that period found that event weird and a turning point. The empire lost a lot of its wealth, relics, population, and was never able to be again ahead in term of technology. Too poor to afford the Hungarian engineer centuries later, which built cannons for Ottomans instead. When Ottomans conquered the city, it was almost an empty place comparatively to the previous centuries.

@@hellshake3848 that's the point, Empire of Justinian, just isn't there anymore. Egypt was the single most important Roman province in the Empire. The royal monopoly created by the Ptolomy dynasty was inherited largely intact, and unaltered. Egypt not only generated massive amounts of inexpensive grain for Rome, Constantinople, Athens, so on.. it was also a tax farm, even more efficient then Anatolian provinces, paying for about 3d of all provincial running costs of the old Empire. Loss of Egypt, was beyond catastrophic. Comparable perhaps only to Turkic settlement of Anatolia, in negative impact and consequences for Byzantium. Effectively unrecoverable. The map doesn't translate that well. After loss of Egypt, the very best case scenario Byzantium could realistically hope for, if everything worked perfectly, was to retain Anatolia and the Balkans. The wider Empire, after loss of Egypt, was done for. This loss of revenue, as well as a very important Hellenic hub of culture, industry, trade and religious practices, fundamentally transformed what was left of the Eastern Roman Empire, into Romanic medieval Greece.. Byzantium we normally think of now. The languages, customs, and large part of identity of the ancient Roman world, and it's society, which still survived up until that point, died in little over a century, fallowing the loss of Egypt. The impact was more severe and intimate then loss of southern Italy for example. So, the Eastern Roman Empire of up until mid 8th century, The successor Byzantine Empire after, and it's dieing shell after 11th centuries, are almost three different entities, the latter two being more similar to each other, then either similarity with the former. The Eastern Roman Empire, as glorious as it was, was well and truly dead by the start of the game. It's economy, influence, technology, martial prowess, architecture, law, social complexity, and others, all decayed beyond repair by the time game starts.

After the disaster of 'Legends of the Dead' I'm waiting for a while before thinking about buying another DLC from Paradox.

I am a certified Byzanboo so I’m excited for this. What the modders do with landless and administrative gameplay will be interesting. Hopefully there are ways to use that government type in the base game without being the ERE, like restoring the western empire would be cool as an Italian character

@@Hovelax it’s my understanding that the caliphates started out as pretty bureaucratic and only during times of weakness would their governors become more autonomous and de facto hereditary so that would make sense that would be a cool mechanic if your influence got high enough in a governorship it becomes yours by right

19:20 "Maybe they'll be an alternative form of mercenary company" Or maybe, if we think really big, maybe the landless characters will REPLACE the current mercenary companies, who already are an example of "landless rulers" in the current state of the game. Mercenary companies usually have noble leaders and you can even get a marriage alliance with them, allowing you to call them in like you could a landed ally instead of paying them. What if they decided to finally expand on that and require you to have actual diplomatic relations and negotiate a contract if you want a freelance mercenary band to help in your war? Maybe with added possibilities that the mercenaries could doublecross you or do their own thing on the side? Instead of just clicking any mercenary company that isn't already hired in the army tab and they instantly teleport to your rally point, it would now also matter where their camps are located, because they'd have to travel to you to take your contract? Also their troops wouldn't be random anymore, but depend on how well they fared in previous wars and how much gold and supplies they could hoard? That could be a really interesting breath of fresh air, especially for late middle ages when lords typically have more gold and like to use more professional troops - thus also mercenary armies getting more important, like they actually did in the late middle ages and renaissance era. The fact that this one screenshot showed that you have a new contracts menu also as a landed ruler supports the idea that it could be something like that. Maybe we get an all new much more intricate contracting system for mercenary companies with the free part of the update (and the DLC only part will be actively playing a landless ruler), similar to the complete overhaul of the traveling system they did with the tours and tournaments update.

for context on the chariot race: the byzantine chariot races were made up of 4 teams: red, blue, green, and white who all often had political ties to various factions within byzantine politics, you see this via their coloring on that (assuming) chariot race results page so I'm assuming that you are inclined to pick a "team" and then spend resources on that team to get as high a rank as possible leading to more influence gain due to public works and games being a MAJOR part of roman/byzantine legitimacy, and also making friends out of your fellow team supporters and potential rivals out of opposing team supporters, or strait up having a Justinian esque riot that spirals out of control due to team shenanigans

I’m skeptical of influence as mana… influence organically arose as your recourses, your armies, peoples opinion, control, and hooks.

I was somewhat hoping for some granularity when it came to government types and forms. You could have unique options for certain cultures or tags, and options you unlock via technology. Just think it would make the game more dynamic and interesting. Obviously don’t know what they are going to do with the next patch, but I don’t think it’s gonna be what I was hoping for.

no imperial garments (loros or chlamys) which is a huge disappointment, the emperor is wearing the generic western cloak that existed since launch...
