UPDATE 2022: After using this scoop off and on for a year I can say that while it could make a fine dry sand scoop, the thin shaft doesn't inspire confidence in the wet or water. There are a couple guys here locally that use it without issue, but for me, I would opt for something with a little more girth and stiffness. Yea, your gonna pay more but, the peace of mind is worth the cost for a good quality scoop that will cover you in all conditions.

Maybe a hexagon handle would prevent slipping !
@CrustyClad Жыл бұрын
Maybe. Good idea. I haven't used this scoop since I posted this vid 2 years ago. Like i say in the pinned comment, the skinny handle doesn't inspire confidence in the conditions I hunt. I'm very happy with my Extreme Scoop ... it has served me well for many years and I would replace it if needed. But, with Extreme's 10 year warranty, I don't see that happening anytime soon. Thanks for the comment ...👍

The welds are where the biggest problem lies. I think they are welded with carbon steel rods. The welds rust badly but will last about a year and a half if you rinse with fresh water after every hunt. For 150 bucks well worth the money.
@therealjasonr65943 жыл бұрын
Oh and a couple of wraps with electrical tape around the shaft where you insert it to the scoop tightens up the looseness

I highly suggest this scoop if you love sitting home on the weekends when you have time to detect. I've busted 6 scoops in the last 2 seasons here in Iowa. Better products out there for serious diggers

Agreed. It's ok for occasional very light use but, not gonna hold up to much abuse. Mine hasn't seen action since this vid posted.

Very disappointed with my CKG sand scoop. I use my scoop exclusively on the east coach beaches of Central Florida. After just 8 months of using my scoop twice a month, I discovered the welds on front of the scoop (both sides) had failed.

Hi There - Great video review. Could you tell us how you would insert the bolt into the dowel filler? Size? Thanks!
@CrustyClad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I would use maybe a 1/8 x 3 inch bolt. Something along those lines. Predrill the scoop before hand and then use a long bit that after everything is assembled. It would take a little fiddling to get it done. I'll post a pic of my Xtreme Scoop in the "community" section later today.

Looks like youve already got a slight bend to the scoop on the top bar that goes across the scoop mouth opening. Mine got that same bend and popped the welds in the corners. It lasted two years. Probably got what i paid for
@CrustyClad3 жыл бұрын
It does have a small bend. I'll agree, it might not be the most durable in the long run. I think it's a good scoop on a budget and I use mine as a backup or I let people new to detecting try it out and compare it my main scoop to appreciate the difference. Thanks for the comment Derek

Does the brake apart shaft have any wobble
@CrustyClad2 жыл бұрын
Just saw this comment Rob (You Tube glitch I suppose). Yes, there is a fair amount of wobble after some use. Others have reported failures of the scoop welds. There's a couple hunters around here using them. One hunts the soft dry sand and never had an issue. The other water hunts and has replaced that scoop after close to a year of use...he upgraded.

If you are a serious beach hunter the ckg will last about 4 years.I like the smaller diameter handle and very light. The welds failed after time.But I LIKE This scoop

I bought this cf shaft handle in June 2021, 4 months later after using it in the water every weekend the upper shaft has become loose the hole now wore down to oval shape that the upper shaft slides back and forth about 3/16th of inch ,it’s just get worse with use , I contacted CKG who I bought it from the said if it brakes then let them know . Last time I buy from them , imo don’t buy from them
@CrustyClad3 жыл бұрын
I use the CKG as a back up scoop or let beginners use it and then compare to my Xtreme. imo, the CKG is fair for the money. That said, the one and done solution IMHO.... Xtreme Scoops. 👍 Thanks for the honest comment 👍

I really needed more info on its strength. I can read Amazon myself and didn't need that. You mentioned angle of attack but didn't really clarify against your other scoop.
@CrustyClad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Joe. Ya can't compare the CKG to an Xtreme, apples and oranges my friend. I've had the CKG for some time now and it basically gathers dust. The thin handle and weak connection doesn't inspire confidence imo. There is lots of flex in the handle. Actually, I'm afraid I'll break it in anything other than soft, dry sand. That said, I have a hunting buddy that's had his for a few years now and uses it as his main scoop in the dry and the wet...no prob. He doesn't see the need for a high dollar scoop and it works well for him. It's a perceived value thing. This budget scoop can work for some but for me...I'll stick with my Xtreme and consider it one and done 👍👍.
@CrustyClad3 жыл бұрын
I think CKG has redesigned this scoop since this video with a stiffer connection and beefed it up a bit. I'm not certain about this however. To be fair, this video was posted some time ago.

@@CrustyClad sounds good. I can’t afford the titanium ones so I’m looking at the stainless and my next question would be how do you find that long 13 inch scoop to work for you? I’m just thinking it seems to be a couple of inches longer than most others and I’m wondering if that would be too bulky or heavy.

That's a LOT of bottle caps and foil (@ .13/lb), smaller holes, and the extra money to sturdy it up... It is way overpriced compared to other possibly equivalent options. I'd buy the scoop and put a different handle on it - the carbon handle is $80 of the overall price. I like CKG. My big detecting shovel is made by them. They are higher but most of the time it is justified, this time it is not! Just getting greedy! They're hoping Detectorists will get what Photographers call "GAS" - 'Gear Acquisition Syndrom' (Gotta have the newest and most expensive)!
