1. Observe thoughts through mindfulness (breath work); 2. ID your thoughts (negative or positive) & body sensations; 3. Use the emotion wheel to name your emotions (practice builds emotional vocabulary ); 4. Keep an emotion journal to see patterns in emotions &/or ID triggers; 5.Respond to the emotions whether that means expressing it, allowing it to pass, or making changes. Practice responding to difficult emotions in a new way and give yourself some grace ❤

I used to be an over-thinker. I would think through everything. Think before you act. They say. I've found that what helps me is to actually, act. Because my tendency is to identify and suppress my emotions almost automatically, to the point where I later feel confused about what I feel, because I disconnected from it so quickly. Acting, helps me to stay in touch with the emotion.

I do this all the time. It's like being chained and made by an oppressor to do something you don't even understand. In this case, though, I'm the oppressor. In other words, this has grown to an unconscious habbit that I don't even know why I am doing it anymore. I want to break free but it feels like I'm in a constant war with myself.

I think that emotions take control over us when we're trying to control them and stuff them down, not hearing what they have to say. The way is not controlling, but recognising and managing emotions, treating them as signals from the body (which they are) with curiosity, not as our enemies.

great content. I have found..... that for those of us from significantly dysfunctional families where there is a lack of basic respect, lack of love, lack of compassion, and an excess of controlling behavior, constant ignoring of boundries, etc..... It is exhausting. To set and maintain boundries you need emotions and these people constantly push on and ignore boundries, which leads to not being able to just be and relax. Like constantnly being around irresponsible teenagers. Constantly being the target of induced conversations (Ross Rosenberg term) ..... exhausting.

Dr you read my mind or something lol. I have problems identifying anger, frustration and emotions in that spectrum. But 2 days ago I hit my arm with a door handle and I just yelled and cursed! and you may think: that's wrong.. but for me it was such a relief and I could realize: :damn, there's so much anger inside me! I was having a bad day, a really bad one crying and feeling so hopeless and sad, and that situation just changed my perspective and made me think about how I disguise anger. You see in my family it's always been punished and silent (specially for women) to express anger and speak loudly about injustice. I'll take your advice. Thank you so much Dr.! Ps: I'm not sure if my comment makes sense since English is not my first language 😅

Hi, I've discovered that I feel numb and the worst when I am in and have been in the vacinity of people, where normal boundries are not allowed, especially my family of origin and/or my husband¨s family, where they have dysfunctional patterns, they constantly push at my boundries, basic respectful behavior for other people is lacking, passive-aggressive bahavior happens, etc., yet normal healthy boundry setting is not allowed, is shamed, etc. These environments do not allow for healthy normal emotions and/or healthy normal boundry behavior....

Even just having a once weekly check-in outloud with yourself, a friend, or in your journal has helped me so much! Looking up a list of possible feelings to have accessible is a great tool, then try this prompt: Right now, I am feeling ______ & _______ For example, if I'm about to go see a friend, my response might look like this: Right now I feel *anxious and excited* Notice your urge to say "but" instead of "and", and be sure to use "and"! This teaches your brain you can feel two seemingly contradicting emotions at once When we feel like we can only feel one thing at a time, the more recognizable (usually the feeling with a more negative association) will overpower the others, so while we may be anxious and excited we'll only recognize the anxiety, which is generally less empowering than it would be to notice you're also excited!

States require that clinicians has a in the license in the state where you live in order to perform clinical services. So my help is limited in being able to steer you in the right direction for a clinician in your state. I usually recommend looking on psychologytoday.com where people post information about the kind of practice they have and you can see see if they may be a good fit. Psychological testing is expensive. I don’t treat children, so I don’t know of any resources to recommend for a less expensive intervention.

LATER, when i've reached a certain level of calmness or i am completely fine, maybe i'll reflect on what the trigger was, etc. this is what i believe works for me, at this point in time ...

Busted! I know it’s from growing up in an alcoholic home where you numb yourself, and as a survival skill push your feelings down. My son said, maybe I’m autistic, so now everyone’s autistic? Also, I hate to say, I’m burned out on hearing phrases such as “Mindfulness” it feels so much like a Buddhists gig. Anyway, not sure how the AI found I looked something up like this, but here I am and if God is trying to get my attention, then that’s great. I need to ID these issues so I can be a better help to our patients.

Our high school's guidance office had a resources room, mostly a small space for kids to hang out in for short periods of time. The room had words for emotions all over the walls in large letters, I realise now they had modified an emotion wheel up with the text size getting smaller to signify the words on the edge. It was too complicated for me, plus the subject made me intensely uncomfortable and mocked the whole thing. I was just behaving as I was shown to. :(
