The only reason anyone is questioning celebrating the rising is because the proclamation has not yet been fulfilled
@robertmcdonald83423 жыл бұрын
Maybe it is not a statement but a standard. I'm part Irish American and I just read ur proclamation, and I thought of our Pledge of Allegiance which I think should be viewed as a standard of what should be not as just a statement of what is
@1969JohnnyM2 жыл бұрын
@@robertmcdonald8342 That would make sense if a third of America or lets pretend 15 US States in the wealthiest part of America remained under British Rule and the US Founding Fathers were left with the remaining US States watching on as citizens in the British governed States were oppressed and treated as third class citizens.

He says there is no hierarchy of Irishness. Yes there is. Those who fought for the Republic and those who served the empire. The ric were a colonial paramilitary police force, involved in evictions, opposed the Young Irelanders, Fenians and Land League. Beat Irish people of the streets of Dublin in 1913. Eyes and ears of British in Ireland.

I do pay my respects to the men and woman who lost their lives in 1916. As an Irish man I am proud of the document produced in fires of struggle. However whats done is done whats won is won and whats lost is lost. When the volunteers marched into the GPO etc. with respect the vision was for a better future for the children of Ireland. An Ireland equal an Ireland free of struggle, and I do think an Ireland free of baggage. Use the proclamation its all there, everything we need going forward in the next 100 years. Remember the sparks that lite the flame, remember ALL the lives lost. But most of all this is a lasting legacy to their ideals which are more relevant today than ever for the future of this country and for our children. This is what is important today and is what was most important to them.

Just for informational purposes, the British citizens of my generation and I am 19, love the USA 4th July independence day, I know a guy who posted a Union jack football with a slogan "Happy Independence day" they loved the celebration and partied and celebrated with the Americans. I look at the 4th of July and I say to myself, please god can Ireland/Eire one United Eire consisting of 32 counties can actually celebrate a day of Independence celebration together.

Using Bruton's line of thinking we should remember the people who liberated the Irish nation and if it hadn't been for their sacrifice he wouldn't have the freedoms he has today, perhaps. When all the occupied countries celebrate regaining their freedom and nationhood at the end of WW2, they don't pay honour to the people who took away their freedom and independence nor do they as Bruton suggests honour the collaborators and Quislings, France does not remember those who served Vichy France or the French people who aided the occupation. Bruton shows that he'd sell out his own people for cheap and very quickly if offered a few crumbs, history repeats itself.

Nice to see Byrne cut McDonald off, lets not be hearing any painful truths. Listening to some off the waffle going on here because the aims of those who died in 1916 are still waiting to be fulfilled. When America celebrates the 4th of July or other nations celebrate independence or a huge national event they don't worry more about how their oppressors are remembered. When the Democratic Republic of Congo celebrates its independence they don't worry about the hand cutting murdering ex Belgian overlords.

How should you commemorate 1916? Hang you heads in shame at all the needless death and destruction. And while you're at it pat yourselves on the back for permanently dividing the island. Nothing was achieved in 1916 that would not have been achieved with a little patience and regard for other views.
@stallthedigger25992 жыл бұрын
What divided the island was when the British planted a bunch of the most bigoted people the planet has ever seen up North , unsurprisingly the founders of the KKK were also Ulster Scots. You can't say permanently divided because the demographics in the North are only going one way and that's towards a Nationalist majority very soon which must worry a loyal subject to the Queen of England like yourself. Also violence was the only option in 1916 because the Home Rule bill was rejected 3 times in the British Parliament. Same thing during the troubles when the Protestant majority refused to give Catholics equal rights so they were forced to compromise through violence."Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable" JFK
@asanulsterman10252 жыл бұрын
@@stallthedigger2599 LMAO So you are saying that the KKK were descendants of the Ulster-Scots, who were descendants of the Scots, who were descendants of the Irish (Dalriada) are the most bigoted people on the planet. I agree, the Irish are very bigoted as your little rant demonstrates. And you justify violence if 'people' don't get what they want. Well all I can say to that is what goes around comes around. If your republican dream of a united ireland ever did come true the inevitable violence of the Ulster resistance movement would be fully justified by your own silly justification. Your day will not come, it has been and gone, time to wake up and smell the roses. In the words of Sean Lemass [4th Taoiseach (1959-1966)].. "There will always be a Northern Ireland"
