Hey man, thanks for these videos. I'm learning to drive, I feel like I'm getting there but unsure at times of what I should do. I just found this video tonight and already you've given me so many great tips. Walking behind the car so other motorists can see you, checking that your headrest is right oh and that idea of putting to neutral as your point of reference, that's great! Sometimes I struggle with the gears and get a bit panicked when it won't go in. This is going to be very helpful. Cheers mate.

I love this instructor, he's much like mine. Thorough, Patient and reassuring. Anyone saying she's dopey or thick when she's clearly nervous and a new driver(I take it you didn't bother reading the description?)is guaranteed to be one of those typical idiots who think they own the road and know it all, frequently drive too fast, overtaking to save 3 seconds not correctly using their clutch and revving round corners. No one is impressed by the way.... The type all proper, sensible drivers hate. Well done Claire and thank you Bob for this

Advice for learners...RESEARCH driving instructors before booking. Get reviews BEFORE booking. A bad tempered or aggressive instructor is worse than useless. This guy is brilliant.
@clientcentredlearning5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say. You are absolutely right about research though, ask some questions about the important stuff. Will they shout, use bad language or behaviour, what are the rules of engagement. ask to see a copy of any terms and conditions and ask questions about stuff you are unsure of. My terms and conditions state the following: I will be courteous, polite, tidy and punctual. I will behave in a professional and ethical manner at all times. My training car will be well maintained, clean and tidy (weather permitting). My car is fitted with dual-controls and is fully insured for driving tuition purposes. I will not smoke in the training car at anytime, nor will I use your lesson time for any other form of business, personal or otherwise without your expressed permission. They also state: In an emergency situation it is important you follow my instructions and allow me to take control of the steering wheel if necessary to avoid an incident. I may also need to make use of the dual controls (i.e. brake and or clutch pedals) and thus override your use of them. As soon as it is safe to do so I will advise you of why my actions were necessary and help you to calm down if required. Any subsequent discussion will focus on what can be learnt rather than who was to blame. I will do my best to deliver any instructions or take any actions (even in an emergency) in a calm and measured manner so as not to alarm you or make you feel uncomfortable or disheartened in any way. I will definitely not shout at you or make any sarcastic or derogatory remarks. You can be assured I will not use improper language or suggestive behaviour and/or physical contact. You should look for similar, or ask questions to determine you will receive the same or similar. Hope that helps

@@clientcentredlearning Your students are lucky to have you....and I am lucky to have found my lovely new instructor. I researched ''Best driving instructors{my city} and got a very good one that I am happy with. The aggressive one was just ghastly, and a confidence sapper. He also got involved {started} a road rage incident while he himself was driving me to a quiet spot on first lesson...I thought it would come to blows. He also said it didn't matter exceeding the speed limit {say 25 in a 20 zone} if other drivers were ''behind'' as there aren't police around due to funding cuts {!}.. My new instructor is strict about keeping to limits, as there are there for safety. Good Driving Instructors seem to be as rare as hen's teeth, and the good ones all have waiting lists...my advice to new students is wait to get on their list. and if your current instructor makes you feel unhappy, change instructors...do not keep paying for substandard or bad tempered tuition.

I was like Claire for a lot of lessons, it took me just over a year to pass due to me having no confidence at all. I always thought im never going to do it and I'll never pass but I did! I passed just over 2 weeks ago :) I also struggled with driving and setting the gas, finding the bite etc because I have a joint disorder which really affects my knees, back, wrists... Well, everything! But my knees are the worst. Now im getting used to my own car, hated it at first because I thought I couldn't control it but I'm slowly getting used to it and realising what my car can and can't do now. Slowly gaining confidence too :) I never thought I'd pass and its instructors like Bob that are a credit to society. My female instructor was exactly like Bob and we got on brilliantly. She’s super cute! I’m currently learning to drive and this was me during my first lesson. Confidence grows each week, I’m happy that I’ve decided to start learning!

My first driving lessons went like : - learning how to steel - drive on rural streets for 20 minutes incl. gears, steeling, (backwards) parking, stopping, driving 60mph etc - drive into a city, passing two schools when school was out and all the kids were running on the street - drive through the city for about 40 minutes with high traffic I never sat behind the drivers seat before this lesson, so I was quiet overwhelmed by this situation. I still dont know when to change gears or how to stop at a traffic light and I didn't had the chance to take care of passengers because I was too busy figuring out how to actually drive the car. In the end I broke the car a little because I wasn't able to change gears in a roundabout and bombed into the curbstone. I wish I had an instructor like Bob.

This method of teaching seems crazy. What would you have liked to have done on your first lesson?
@HazardNP8 жыл бұрын
I've noticed i progress ridiculously quick compared to most youtube videos, going for my 6th lesson (probably only about 4th hour of driving due to going to quiet conditions as a passenger etc) and i'm doing dual carriageways, three point turns and medium roundabouts.. But doing that on your first lesson is crazy.. The instructor should definetely set goals with you so you know what to expect and can prepare for at home. If he sprung it on me i definetely would of been panicky, but ive done hours of research etc so confidence is high and key!

Watching this is so unbelievably refreshing. Sir, how I wish all instructors had your patience, humour and kindness. Even just the seat adjustments part way through, I'd have been scolded for not getting it right first time. There was no 'trying ways out'. I often drove for several hours in pain because I felt uncomfortable in the 'right' position as guided by my instructors. They got so stressed and angry at me stalling which caused me to break down in tears but he remains so calm here and thus Claire manages to not lose her cool like I did. But the "you don't have to apologise" was like a shot in the heart. I felt obligated to apologise for everything I said or did wrong. I got huffed and tutted at constantly. If, like Claire, I said 'I didn't know' what to be cautious of when changing seats, I'd have been told the answer in a patronising manner and scolded for not knowing. Everything was always my fault, I could never put a foot right and didn't get a single piece of praise. I've had two instructors and they were both the same. But they came highly recommended, 5* reviews and friend referrals. I really don't know what to do now. I'm desperate to pass quickly so I can get a job. I feel like I can't trust instructors anymore as both were just a waste of time and money and have left me really traumatised, with no confidence and fearful to drive. If anyone has any tips on how to move on from this or how to distinguish the wheat from the chaff I'd be really grateful? Thank you. Really doesn't help that I live in the middle of nowhere and there are hardly any instructors here. Also those work books, neither of my instructors had anything like that. So now I have no materials to look back on or any logs of what I did. I'd love some work books. I read the description too and I really empathise with Claire's sister. I spent a lot of money and two years on two different instructors who didn't even let me attempt a test. Just days before my test with my 2nd instructor she cancelled my test and told me that I shouldn't be driving due to my confidence and nerves, also to come back after I've sought out medical help (not even joking) and try auto. I wish there was an instructor like Bob near me. (P.s. he has the same accent as my dad so I think that's why I find him especially comforting)

Zoe Hey, your instructors sound awful, I’d recommend going on google and looking at all the instructors in your area as well as the reviews, if your parents drive maybe you could practice with them before getting a new instructor to help with anything your unsure of? As for the workbooks, I don’t use them either, but what I do is straight after my lesson I write down anything I struggled with onto my phone to mention at the start of my next lesson as well as anything new or useful I learned during that lesson as a reminder for next time. Good luck!

Hes got the patience of a saint. What a lovely guy! I've just had my second lesson and my instructor recommended I watch LCD on KZbin. Very informative. It didn't take me long to learn how to get into gear and change gear but my steering is terrible! 😂

+twitter: Harrystileshq Thank you for your kind words. When the time comes to choose an instructor, do some serious research. Ask friends for recommendations, but don't just take it on face value, ask them why they recommend them so you can be sure you find someone who can meet your needs. You are about to spend a lot of money. People will happily just pick an instructor from an advert and spend a ton of money (perhaps over £1000) without researching properly. Yet they will research for days or even weeks before buying a £300 tablet or ipad.  thousands of people every year sign up with an instructor who doesn't identify and meet their needs and then put up with poor service because the money is already paid up front. Nothing wrong with paying up front as it gains you a discount, but be sure you will receive what you want and need (you are the customer here) Ask yourself the questions before starting your research;  What do I want and/or need from an instructor? How do I want to be treated? (hardly anyone considers this or asks the question of the service provider) What level of customer service can I expect? How will we measure my progress? How will the learning environment be? (for example following a mistake, will we discuss what can be learned or will we apportion blame) Look for codes of conduct, testimonials etc. Ask if it would be possible to speak with former or current pupils. Find out if the instructor adapt the lessons to suit you or will you be subjected to a one size fits all approach. The only person in the world who truly knows what is best for you is you. I hope that helps.
