I've been tent-camping for 45 years and bought the Clam Pavilion a few years ago and love it. I spray-waterproofed the roof and seam-sealed the entire tent before using. Three of us and my dog camped with it four days and it rained/misted for 72 hours straight. Except for sleeping, we were in the Clam most of that time, cooking, eating, drinking, and napping. Didn't leak a drop. Inside was a large picnic table, 3 large coolers, dog bed, propane stove and oven, 3 lawn chairs, 6 large tote boxes, and space to lay down. Yes, the storage bag should be a little bigger and I wish it broke down shorter than seven feet long, but on that trip the Clam made the difference between going home and staying for a wonderful time!

We have had our Clam for 4 years and we love it. This summer was the first time I had any leaking and it was very little. I will use seam sealer to seal some of the seams. We used to have trouble putting it back in the bag but with time you get better at it. I love sitting in my clam during a light rain storm. Yes, wind can cause problems and my husband has made a pole to put up in the center for when it gets real windy. We have a camper but when we go camping we spend most of our time in the Clam. I have my coffee maker, my tv, a fan, a table chairs, just like home. When the sun starts to beat in, you just put down the flap where the sun is coming in and you can open the windows on the flaps as well. I would not camp without my Clam!

Rain protection: even the best tents need to have the seams sealed. There are commercial preparations for this, or you can just use clear Silicone caulk, and work it into the seams with your fingers. Dripping ceiling: most of the drippage is caused by condensation. No really too much you can do about that. It is just kind of raining inside. Heat: we are in Texas. It gets hot! The first thing we do after setting up the clam is to run a heavy gauge 50’ extension cord, direct from the power pole to the clam. Then we set up a couple of box fans. We can sit in it at Texas temps, in relative comfort. We also use it to power our coffee maker, and the string of lights and occasionally the electric skillet. Collapsing: if the sides are all down, and the windows are all closed, we have never had a collapse. Just the air pressure inside keeps the top up. In 20 mph winds, gusting to 40 mph. The two times we had the sides rolled up and had a collapse, it as a small matter for me (72 years old) to empty the top and pop it back up. No damage done. Our clam always goes onto the truck last, and comes off first. I honestly can’t see us camping without it!
@MWDAdventures6 жыл бұрын
Marney Mason some good tips for the heat. The water we had was rain not condensation. I have been in many tents and have had condensation. New shelter shouldn’t have to be seam sealed but never the less it would help for sure. Thanks for sharing.

@@MWDAdventures Most tents do not have factory seam sealing, even expensive ones. Ultimately is is almost always the end users responsibility. Tent companies site the amount of space/time that would be required to set up each tent, seal it up, and then let it dry. Better to save the customer some money and allow them to do it themselves. Sounds like a simple tarp would take care of the rain intrusion issue, and likely minimize a lot of the thermal gain. Granted, a rainfly sounds like it should be a factory option.

Just bought this in clam April 2022, for a backyard gazebo. We got it with the optional tarp floor that attaches with velcro all around. In the past week we have had 3 rainstorms, the inside remained dry. It is set up under a giant Manitoba Linden tree which provides shade over the tent roof as well as some rain protection. I noticed that Amazon and Way-fair sell the optional rain fly for this clam roof. I may buy the rain fly at some point. I staked the tent down from the roof using the clips where the rain fly would attach to the roof. Not sure if this will be better then staking to the pull-out in the walls, so far we have not had a big wind. This clam screen gazebo will remain set up from May until the end of October to provide shelter from the bugs, wind and rain. I have the tarp floor then indoor/outdoor carpet in the middle, a glider love seat with cushions, lawn chairs, a stand up bar table, dog bed and end tables in there. We use it for coffee, relaxing.. etc.. I call it camping urban style. Last year we used our late 1980s camping screen tent with storm flaps, it was great for sun and bugs..not waterproof anymore. The new clam is a major upgrade.

Dang, the main reason I am looking at one of these is rain protection. I swear this year I have not been able to go camping (I have a car set up, as do my two favorite camping buddies) without spending a couple of hours a day in the car waiting for the rain to stop. Spent two days in the Bighorns last week that included a 3 hour rain storm as well as an early night because the rain started around 8:30 PM and I just gave up and went to bed. Would love to have a shelter that 3-4 of us could hang out in till the rain passed, instead of each of us holed up in our car. I think I'm going to check out the shelter you mentioned having before you bought this one! Only thing is, I would also like something I can easily set up on my own, because I also camp solo. Would be nice to have it close to the door of my car that I get out of, for dressing etc. The search continues! Thank you for your honest review. You saved me some money for sure because this fails at the primary reason I want to buy one. Edit: I see some have waterproofed it themselves. At this price point, I don't want to have to fix the darned thing before I can use it. They're currently running about $400 give or take and essentially do 1 of the 3 things I am looking for. Nah.

One additional point. The straps on the sidewall hubs... DON’T tie ropes to them! Use them simply for pulling out the sidewalks to pop up the tent. For tie outs, use ropes secured to small carabiners, and clipped into the rings. That way, you can clip and unclip them to roll the sidewalls up and down. It makes the process much easier than trying to untie and retire the rope, or thread the whole rope through the hole in the sidewall. The Clam is every good thing anyone has ever said about it. Nay sayers just haven’t learned to use it correctly yet!

I have an old Cabela’s 6’x6’ Screen hub tent. I have used it for years in the yard mainly, not camping. The things you point out are true. But the odd thing is, I still use it and have to re-engineer it as I can’t find another screen tent or camp tent I’d spend money on to do what I want it to. Yeah, reflect heat(no trees here), mostly. I have to put an old reflective canopy cover over my hub tent to block heat. I don’t know why the tent makers can’t make a tent with an aluminized fabric roof! The beach tents have it, but they are small for actual camping. I take it down if threat of rain. If wind kicks up, need strong stakes, hubs tied down, but it simply will collapse if enough wind and storming, start tearing fabric, hubs are weaker. Yeah, so best it’s not up in a storm. I had to buy aluminum poles for the front door, to stabilize. Mine has no floor, and I like it, less to fold up! But a removable floor is great! I want to buy another tent but not until the main tent makers have heat reflective fabric, removable floors, and easy up features.

Thanks for your review. We were considering this model, but we will look elsewhere. For the price, there is simply no reason why they could not include a reflective rain fly for both rain and sun protection. Too many shelters become hothouses in the sun because of thin translucent tent materials.

We have had a Clam Escape for severs years and love it. Our side panels are separate. In watching your video I noticed yours didn’t seem to be of the same quality as ours. We have very little water in heavy rains and then it’s because of the panels not being sewn to the top. Your fabric seemed much thinner. We don’t have pin holes at the seams. Our top has never collapsed and it’s been in some pretty heavy storms. We did have one side blow in but we didn’t have the tie downs on that side so it was our fault. It does seem warm inside because the mesh is so thick we can’t get a breeze. We don’t really use ours as a bug shelter but we use it to store our stuff in while camping. When we close ours and have it on the ground we roll it and all the fabric rolls around it. This makes it much easier to get the the bag. I wonder if the sides were tied up or secured down if yours would have been easier to get in the bag. It is so much easier than any other canopy we have had to put in a bag. It is a little big, we often call it a dead body. I am wondering if the quality has went down. I watched this video because I like ours so much I was thinking of getting one with sides attached. Thanks for the video. I think I’ll keep our current one.

They work fine. You are getting a big shelter/tent. You can’t do a half assed purchase and then complain about what you have on hand when you literally want to use it for all situations. If you would of bought the rain fly AND bathtub style floor for this unit then I believe that you would of been more impressed with it total capabilities. You bought the base unit item in it’s most low dollar configuration. A bug screen shelter for cocktails and dinner. For a tent, you have learned that both a floor and rain fly are necessary. The side panels should be kept rolled up as much as possible for cross ventilation. Now you know. And lastly, no tent is cool in direct sun. This is exactly why even RV’s have air conditioning! For the cost vs actual size of its foot print, this company provides a very effective product line.

I just purchased a pavilion after camping with a borrowed 140x140 Clam with three panels. I was extremely impressed with the ease of set up and the added privacy of the panels. I have been using a Coleman 12X10 screen shelter but it is heavy and difficult to set up albeit it's roof is waterproof and it has a decent solar blocking roof. I solo camp half the time and the privacy is nice as sometimes when you are next to a large group of people it can feel like you have a lot of eyes on you. I plan on using a UV waterproofing tent spray for the roof and reflectix panels if need be. I appreciate your insight into the product.

We have always tried using just EZup's and those are difficult to setup with just a single person. Started looking at these and and was thinking these were perfect. But we get thunderstorms, and heat. And if it gets too hot to sit in when the outside temps are 80 we wouldn't enjoy this. Wish they would have two doors or maybe different size screens. If they had the ability to have larger screens for those hot times, and then the no see-em mesh for the cooler temps (since that is when the bugs are out anyways), and then the rain flaps for the rainy times, that would be perfect.

I have had the same issue with every single dining tent and gazebo we have ever used or have been in. The issue being, no breeze through no seeum mesh, its always what I have experienced, rain penetrates, its resistant, not rain proof, no tent is, so you need to spray the tent twice a year with silicone, bugs, well, I have never been in any shelter that is bug proof, no such thing, and finally, heat penetration from the sun, well, I have never seen a shelter designed to be sun proof either. How many of us have been awakened by the morning sun in our tents at 7am? I think your expectations did not meet the reality of camping.. I have been camping for well over 40 years, and anyone who thanked you for sharing this also has zero experience in my view. Thanks for taking the time to post, but to be honest, camping is about roughing it a little, and not like sitting at home in your living room. With all due respect I dont think people with no real experience should be posting hate vids about products, its just not fair to the manufacturers in my humble opinion. :-)
@MWDAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Axeman Fishing wasn’t meant as a hate video just sharing some thoughts for the glampers with high expectations. I have been using a cheap 12x12 dicks sporting goods with no bug net for ten years. It’s Grey lined underside reflects heat on the hottest days. Sprayed it for complete waterproofing. We can play cards and not get wet. We are cooler too without the no-sems poor ventilation issues. Most of the times I sleep in a hammock with a tarp or occasionally are pop up camper. No air, no water, no potty so I have a few years roughing it. The point of buying this clam was to have a place for the kids to use as a changing room. Water proof for a added guest to sleep in and reduce mosquitoes a bit. That said this had to many negatives at the time to recommend to some one that wanted all the bells and whistles of this model. Since this video they have fixed all the issues that I had mentioned so someone is paying attention to the KZbin videos. How else does a company know how there product is holding up in the field without feed back. They now sell a floor for this model and a rain fly so some one is listen. Also since this video I have purchased a gazelle tent which is the same style hub tent but with a floor and rain fly.

can you anchor it in the wind and leave it up?

I wouldn't expect anything less on a "baking hot day". Plus, I'm not getting how rain was dripping on you while playing cards if the holes where on the sides of the tent.

Great video. I want a floor in it to keep bugs out. I swear...a cheap tent looks better and better after these clam reviews. It might take a bit longer to set up a tent but over the long haul it might be easier. lol I keep looking at these clam shelters because of easy up and down, but your review pretty much shut the door on a clam. Thanks again

i just got it and i was going to put a tarp on it for rain but when you said that the center collapsed needing a support thing then that broke the deal for me. that's way too much. did you end up buying something else? now i don't know what to get.🤔

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I was planning to buy a clam, love it's portability, but I hate everything else. I don't think I'd buy one now even if they were to cut the price in half ! Thank you so much once again !

Has anyone found anything better than the clam with a rain fly? Open to recommendations, but I think it will be hard to beat.

Is it possible to throw a tarp over the top to help with the heat?
@MWDAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could put a tarp over the top.

We use it strictly as a place to store our bikes and things we want to keep dry and it works for us. I hope you didn’t ship it back wet 😬

Why not use the seam glue on it to prevent leakage? What about a large nylon tarp for a rain fly over the top? They do have reflective material on tarps that should help. It sounds like it may need a tarp for the floor. Not a big deal to add for a added shelter if you need one.

Pilgrim Carolee they have now come out with a rainfly.

I had added this to my "shopping list" on Amazon. I'm not going to get one. I also need rain and heat protection. I'll choose something else.

What did you go with after you returned this? I'm looking for a screen shelter with rain proof top as well. Wondering if you found one you like!

gazelle branded. I have had it with a dozen rain storms and no issues.

@@MWDAdventures glad to hear it. I was looking at those too. Did you consider the Eureka Northern Breeze at all? It appears to have everything but I'm hesitant bc of that price...

Some big cons there. My friend just bought the small size and returned it because it leaked from rain even with the covers on the outside.

I think you're supposed to remove the side panels before packing it up. That may be why you had so much trouble fitting back into the bag.
