Nice video. Clan Line going at a good lick with a very heavy train, and no dead diesel. I think the 1920s wooden bodied Pullman coaches tip the scales at getting on for 40 tons, a lot heavier than the BR built coaches making up the numbers at either end.
@hilsthetrainlady46833 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony. Yes, I’m sure those coaches weigh a massive amount. They have mosaic floors in the loos, beautiful marquetry panelling, sturdy furniture….. Not to mention the kitchen coach.

I particularly enjoyed your shot featuring Petersfield. I passed that once so many times and looked out for the remains of the Midhurst bay at the same time. By the was, I am surprised that W S Gilbert did not employ the name Godalming as an expression in the opera, 'Ruddigore', instead of 'Basingstoke'. I must use it myself...far better than saying 'Effingham Junction', which always amused me as a schoolboy.
@hilsthetrainlady46833 жыл бұрын
Thank you, John. It was really good to see a signal box. There’s aren’t many left now, and this one looks to be doomed, to make way for crossing upgrade. I think Effingham (Junction) is the butt of many jokes….. 😊 Hilary

Nice sequences. Someone's being a bit cheeky down the ramp at Brookwood. I filmed at Weybridge and Old Basing. An exemplary run given a very heavy train (530 tons) and no diesel 'insurance' in the height of the leaf fall season on the 'Portsmouth Direct', which is notorious for problems in autumn. The crew were, however, most worried about the short stretch into Tulse Hill, which is steep and on a very sharp curve, with the risk of being held at the junction and having to re-start. All went without a hitch. It's fascinating to think that some of the coaches are nearly 100 years old and still in main line service!
@hilsthetrainlady46833 жыл бұрын
The rail cleaning train had gone down the route beforehand, which no doubt helped. Brookwood has a pretty tall safety gate at the end of the platform; the tripod I have now easily tops it, and some bridges which I can’t even see over 😊 We did think of doing Weybridge, but feared she’d be on the slow, so chose Godalming instead.

Fabulous footage as always Hilary. She wasn't going very fast at Petersfield was she? Wonder if the barriers weren't lowered in time?
@hilsthetrainlady46833 жыл бұрын
