Clapping On Beat - Are Claps On 1 And 3 THE WORST?

Here's what you've all been waiting for: a black professional female musician's opinion on the annoyance of hearing people clap on beats 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4. But my thoughts on the matter might actually surprise you.

Finally some sanity on this topic. The argument usually boils down to what people think is "cool", not necessarily what is "correct" (fitting) for a given song/style. & I'd bet that if you asked many of those who parrot the "friends don't let friends clap on 1 & 3" mantra, they couldn't explain why. ...BUUUUT...as you point out @ 2:54, nothing is worse than clappers who are truly off/between beats. 😆

When we have cousins that clap on 1&3 and they’re not quite off, but not exactly on 🧐 we say they clap or dance to the “back” beat 😅 and we’re not gonna talk about ppl clapping and dancing to the words and not the beats 😂 great video

Sure, there’s nothing wrong with clapping on 1 & 3, and if an audience or congregation can do it and stay on beat, great. The problem is that audiences clapping on 1 & 3 tend to drag, which slows that song overall. In contrast, clapping on 2 & 4 swings that beat, which for some reason among non-musicians in the audience, does not have the same tendency to drag. This is why some musicians who find an audience clapping on 1&3 and dragging the beat, will “flip” the audience by inserting an odd measure, like a 3/4 or 5/4, to get the audience on 2 & 4. So, sure, feel free to clap on 1 & 3, but mind you don’t drag. Watch the drummer or the choir director and make sure you’re not a fraction of a beat behind 😊
