Do You Clap on the "WRONG" Beat? Take the 6-Level Clap Test

Some new students will tell me they have terrible rhythm so I usually give them this quick test to see where they're at. How do you score on the Clap Test? :)

Yeah, I was really surprised that there would be a level after 4, which is what I did too. I get that the point is more like "would you be able to clap like this?", but I would never naturally clap like that to any song haha, unless I'm trying to do some "clever" percussion with just claps.

My brain instantly knew that it calls for clapping on the & but hands immediately started to clap in 1234 pattern. I think it's because here in central Europe (Czechia) traditional music goes this way and accent always falls right to the beats. I'm trying to break this habit but it's long distance run because it seems it's hardwired deep inside :-)

Yeah Level 4 is the best way to do it and I did that first in this "test" but then because it's not actually a performance, I went to Level 5 and just started screwing around.

One key principle to remember when clapping to a song is to listen to the drummer if there is one. Where ever the drummer hits the snare drum, that's where you should clap.

I'm a professional drummer and imo level 2 is the most appropriate because the song suggests a march, level 4 is good too but gives it a much more sort of folky feel, though that might be more appropriate given how the guitar was played and that is a black gospel song 5 is bad and basically just a new inappropriate part being added to the song rather than an accompaniment

I was Level 5. But instead of thinking of it as offbeats (&s) you can just think of it as clapping on the 2 and 4, you're just interpreting the pulse as twice as fast. Dope.

What helped me the most to switch from clapping on 1 and 3 to 2 and 4 was to stomp on 1 and 3. Its not that my body didnt feel the 1 and 3 but it needed some motion. Also just listing to the kick (stomp) and snare (clap) of the drummer helps to ingrain what clapping actually should do.

I would argue that level 2 is a lot more appropriate for this song than level 3. To me, level 2 vs level 4 in the context of this particular song is kind of debatable. Both work quite well in this song, and it kind of depends on which rhythmic feel you are after. Offbeat claps don't always work, and aren't always appropriate for the style. In this case, maybe. But I have also heard folk music where clapping on the beat is more appropriate. It is true that clapping on the beat is easier than clapping on the offbeats. But this is also about "musical judgement" - knowing the style. And this is one of those examples that IMO can be interpreted in two different ways. If it's a jazzier interpretation, you clap on the offbeats. And if it's more of a "march", then you clap on the beats. Level 6 is choosing the one that's most appropriate for the song. A thing that confused me about the instruction to "clap to the song" was that I naturally interpret it as just clapping in tempo. If it was "accompany the song by clapping your hands", then I would obviously come up with a more interesting pattern.

Yes!!! I find it really annoying that he insists that there is one "correct way to clap". Of course level 0 is plain wrong, but all the rest is a matter of taste and each one could be more appropriate for certain circumstances.

1 & 3 is preferable for some genres like bluegrass and old timey music, but for this song, I was clapping on the &s for most of it, except I switched to "on the beats" for one line-"Oh, Lord, I want to be in that number"-and then switched back so that it accentuated how the "&" clapping falls between the words. Level 5, baby! And I was raised in a Pentecostal church playing piano, so your theory is correct haha

I've been in band all my school years and was first chair flute every year, but I noticed that I couldn't clap to songs at church or girl scout camp like others and I would totally lose the beat and would clap when they weren't. It was embarrassing and I barely ever clap in public. I'm 62 now. So I took your test and it was absolutely weird! I started at level 1 on all 4 beats, then I froze at level 0 for a bit. Suddenly it popped in my head to clap on the off beats, 2 and 4, so I ended with level 3. Very weird!

I was surprised to find so many comments thinking that Lv 5 was "over clapping" or whatever you wanna call it. Lv 5 was what I went to right away as it felt the most right. After finding that, I naturally wanted to embellish it in a variety of ways. So I agree with his assessment. Lv 5 sounds best amongst the basic patterns. You might not feel it yourself, but that doesn't make it wrong.

Because over all these years I realize there's a difference between clapping on all the counts (1234) and just on the back beat (2,4). It's a feel thing and those who can do it seem to just get rhythms faster.

@The-Art-of-Guitar is difference to being able to do clap a certain way and how you naturally clap. I clap naturally 1,2,3,4 which in theory is a good way to stay in time since thats how a metromome ticks. The Most common reason to clap is to count beats and stay in time and it is a hand equivelent of tapping your leg to the beat whilst playing. instantly you give a 1,2,3,4 count in showing thats how you 'should' clap to it since thats how you count to stay in time with the music. Also if you look at levels 4 and 5 you are still tapping your leg in a 1,2,3,4 count showing that thats how you are countting. I think you ahould have made the point of the video more clear from the start and let people know that the test is not to test counting but creativity of rhythms since they are both very different things and ot was not clear what the reason for clapping is other than its a clapping test. As a grade 8 bass player i find its more important to learn to count first rather than to play interesting ryhthms as that comes after. This test has been of know use to me. It tells me im 'level 2' but i can play primus stuff that features slaps, pops, and left hand ghost notes by whacking you left hand on the fretboard without hammering on(tommy the cat - bass solo) this technique uses mutiple hand for the rhythm and is very drum like. Yet you say im 'level 2'. I practice tool songs on bass lots and yet my rhythm is according to you inferior to someone who claps on the off beats.

You can have any of theese "go to" claps ( 1+3, 2+4, all counts, or on "&" ) and be able to replicate all of them easily.

I always clap along with the snare drum (I'm a guitarist, not a drummer btw), and since this tune didn't have drums, i had to imagine a beat to it, therefore I ended up at level 3. found myself doing straight 16ths with an emphasis on the &s. a helpful way to think of claps is as the hi-hat... which is literally a clapping cymbal. hold the pattern and add a little flair without degenerating the song structure and you will light up that campfire like fireworks in a zoo.

I absolutely agree with the 6th step, because that's accenting where you would probably accent if you were doing 16ths on a snare. Some people are saying it's overplaying, but I'm going to go the other way and say that just straight upbeat accents, with no variation, would actually be underplaying to this. And also, you did say that the step is kind of 'going extra', so kind of like a bonus round. I'd encourage drummers to, instead of clapping, play this as 16ths with both hands, and you'll see the accents he's talking about, and how they do service to the song.

Haven’t picked up an instrument in a while but I clapped a 2 just because it was the easiest and “safe” clap no one would ever blast you for, but could have don’t all the way up to the 5. Not a drummer so my “and” beats are always the hardest though.

It’s interesting. I was clapping along at what you call a level 5 with some of the embellishments. But when I try to go back to clap on the 2/4 without anything in between it felt forced and I had to actively pay more attention. But clapping on the 2/4 and just embellishing in between felt way more natural than anything, including the 1/3 and 2/4. I’m not sure why.

I heard jazz musicians learn to tap their feet on the 2 & 4 though, I think this is more for keeping up with faster tempos. In general, I think you’ve almost got to dance to the music in order to key in to the “wavelength”. Seems kinda Freudian if you ask me. 😂

I can always *hear* when I’m clapping on 1 & 3 but I can never *feel* it, like 2 & 4 just doesn’t come naturally to me, but hearing 1 & 3 being clapped drives me *insane* when I’m at concerts, like I cannot stand it. Morgan Freeman is clapping along (as are the rest of the troops), but he's clapping on the upbeat, and he's embellishing, and by embellish, I mean he's hitting the E & A on some bars, clapping. I just clapped at Level 3 because that's what works best in a public setting, but I've always been the one playing the drums on the desk at school so my limits to clapping and tapping on a beat are basically nonexistent
