Im totally new to sewing and have a leather vest that i want patches on from charity rides. This would definitely help me to do it myself instead of paying someone to do it and save me money

Oh my gosh. This is an eye opener. I had been sewing patched for a little bit on leather vests and not been going well. I took a leather sewing class some time ago and it said to sew the largest stitch because if not it will ruin the leather. No pinning at all either use leather glue (not easy to find here) or double sided tape (yeah that doesn't work), glue stick (nope doesn't work either). So, wrestle with the patches to stay where they are and then stitch them and later stitches come out. The idea of invisible thread oh my gosh why didn't I think of that. I use it on my blind hemming machine and others. This video will be a game changer for me and have some vests coming later. ❤❤

I wish all your leather sewing to go well. Let me know if you ever need help. There isn't much I haven't sewn over the last 50 years 😉

Beginner question: Is the back stitch in the beginning necessary or would the patch stay on if you only backstitched once after overlapping in the corner where you started in the beginning?

Better safe than patch less lol...

I'm still pretty new to sewing -- but I have a fiance that is looking at me to sew on a whole vest full of patches lol! I have leather needles but they're 90/14; that's what my machine recommends (I have a Janome MC6650) -- Do I need to get the 100/16 needles in your video to go with the nylon invisible thread? Thank you for this! Very informative!
@clare-rowley10 ай бұрын
Yes, your Janome can use all sizes of needles 😁 this is challenging, but you can do it!

Hey there - have you ever sewed a PVC patch onto a thicker piece of leather, like a guitar strap or purse? Can that be done with a machine like yours?
@clare-rowley Жыл бұрын
I have accomplished things unimaginable with a domestic sewing machine - in order to achieve what you're speaking of will require a sewing machine with a needle up and down button and an electronic foot control. Choosing the correct needle will be your biggest challenge. I suggest you join my school and reach out to me there with a photo of the ingredients that you're using so I can assist you better.

Hi! thanks for your video, I was wondering how to sew a patch into leather by hand, with enough force and patience would I be able to sew it without having a sewing machine? thanks for your time!
@clare-rowley Жыл бұрын
Get a kit of hand needles for upholstery. It's possible but painful. You'll need a thimble for your finger to push the needle through.

What settings should I have on my machine while sewing the patch on? Meaning the LED screen settings.
@clare-rowley3 ай бұрын
@@shilosenquiz3241 I showed the different techniques if you're going to use a straight stitches just a straight stitch. And if you're using a free motion foot then there's no need to worry about any of your other settings.

Are you using a bobbin with the monofillamnet as well? Looks like only one need thread is there

Did you put invisible thread in bobbin?
@clare-rowley10 ай бұрын
No. You can match your bobbin thread to the fabric. I did, however, use the Nylon Lingerie thread in the bobbin.www.creativefeet.com/products/nylon-thread

Love your machine- shocked - but understand the price. Need to free motion stitch a bunch of leather patches on leather. have a Pfaff 1245- but don't see that working. Are there more economical alternatives to the Baby lock to accomplish this? Great videos!
@clare-rowley Жыл бұрын
You can do this with your Pfaff for sure!

You wouldn't believe me I bought 3 pieces of leather at hobby lobby. I cut out the vest pieces. I use a hammer and 6 penny nail to pilot the holes with both pieces together. Then I thread a tapestry needle with leather lace overlap the back & side panel knot the thread then Sew. I always did work.outside the box Lol. I made lots of vests for my own personal use. I hand paint mine with the designs I like to customize. Line up the holes and it will align the pieces and I got a vest. I seal my thread inside with E-6000. This is making an old school vest.

If the leather needle cuts the material, will it also cut the edge stitching of the patch if one choose to saw through it?
@clare-rowley4 ай бұрын
Yes. However, if the item isn't stretchy it will be difficult for tearing to occur.

So we recently took my vest paid 200$ and she sewed all of my pockets closed ? There’s a way to not sew pockets closed correct?
@clare-rowley Жыл бұрын
Yes. You open the seams as I showed in this video. And hand sew the lining after the patches are attached.

I know the stitch length suggested for leather vests is 3.5 but what would the width be?
@clare-rowley10 ай бұрын
I used a straight stitch, so there wasn't a width. If you want to sew your own patch, then you'll want to use a zigzag stitch and a 3.5mm width.
