Wow, I am amazed at the bottom comment. To me, he is very very good and has a right to show what he can do, after many many years of work and practice. I find this video really inspiring and it makes me want to keep going to reach those heights. This is only a glimpse of the insane things professors can do on a clarinet (and not just Bob Spring). Without his "showing off", I would've given up the clarinet by now, thinking that I can't break limits. I'm grateful that he was willing to risk being called arrogant just to inspire a few serious clarinetists; I've never seen any other pro clarinetist do this.

OMG....two stands. That is brilliant. Oh, and the finger and tongue technique is pretty good too. Thanks to Dr. Spring, I've been using this warm-up for several weeks and never felt more powerful with my saxophone altissimo and articulation!

I am not familiar with all of the geat clarinetists but you (Robert Spring) are the nearest thing I have seen to my favourite clarientist, Robert Marcellus, in person. It has been really great for me to see and hear such good playing in detail. If I could add anythig it would be to play as hard and mechanically accurate as physically possible, sets of four semitbreves on low Bb, without losing any of the musicality of the tone, then eight minims, and sixteen crochets adding denisty down to E1.

Yeah, this guy really knows what he's talking about. I like how he give credit to his fingers doing the work. It's because of the fingers that everything really fall into place. Great tone, spectacular articulation, wonderful playing. I would like to know what he knows about clearer single-triple tonguing and flawless circular breathing...

@moncor3 I've seen him perform many times. He is as impressive artistically as he is technically. It's odd to me that some will criticize ones musicality based upon a warm-up routine.

I'm not happy. I bought the Baermann complete method op.63 Third Division Edited by Gustave Langenus published by Carl Fischer based on this video and I can't find anything of what Robert is referring to. For example there are no arpeggios on page 14 only interrupted scales :( Please could someone tell me what book he is referring to. Thanks.

This is 8 years too late, but it's not the Baermann edited by Langenus book... it's just the Langenus method book.

I saw this video many years ago and agree that it is a good warm-up routine for someone who 'already' has virtuosic technical mastery of the clarinet. Mastery of scales etc. is undoubtedly the route to technical mastery of any instrument but, what it fails to acknowledge, is that a good technique is a 'means to an end'. Playing 'musically', with real artistry, requires something more than a solid technique. A sound technique allows a 'musician' (rather than an instrumentalist) to more easily 'express' a composers intentions. Technique should be at the service of the music, not the other way round. It is no use being able to play fast tongued passages if, for example, you have no concept of how to shape a phrase or how to bring out the different tonal characteristics of your instrument and fail to capture and convey the intended character of a piece.

Some of this is pretty impressive technically, but on the other hand... meh. For me there's nothing worse than a musician who thinks talent is who can play the fastest/loudest/lowest/highest, but disregards what music is about. This video just gives me the impression that you are one of these soulless show-offs. Some people may like it, but in the end, this is among the most boring musical abilities to have. Have fun!
