Oh wow my brother and I build one back in 1999-2000 in wood shop at out our local high school and ours was red too with two white strips up the middle. What great memories you bring back

Hey Keith and Dad, thanks for these videos. My 12 and 13 year old sons were so inspired by your project they are considering selling their Seadoo to fund a hydroplane project! Watching your videos has convinced them that the fun is in the build, the pride of ownership and most importantly the memories you and your Dad will have together! Keep these vids coming as you continue to improve this little rocket!

That little boat is so cool,it looks like a blast to drive around that lake in. How fast and well it runs on just 15HP is very telling of it's good design. Much more fun than a jet ski I'm sure. Really nice job!

Thanks, It was built as my high school woodshop project senior year of high school. Built along with 14 other individual projects other people did in my class. On spring break I worked on it in the garage and brought it back to the shop. I finished the clear coating in the garage and it was rigged and painted at home. Very fun to cruise around lakes on!

I built a Glen L boat in high school in 1975. You did a great job with your boat. If you put a 25 hp on the boat it will really move fast. I love old vintage outboard motors.

That would be awesome I'd love to see it! We have had our '56 Fastwin for forever and it runs great. In its day it has pulled a slalom skier from a deep water start, pulled over a flipped catamaran (video on my channel), braved the 4 foot swells of lake winni, and is now on my boat. Great motors!

I built a hydroplane in my wood shop in high school in 1975. I think the plans were from Clark Boats. It took the spring semester and I took summer school to finish the build. Good job on your build. I think you learn a lot from building it yourself. My first project in wood class I built a water ski than the boat was the next build.

Thank you!! I'm sure there will be more videos to come of the TU-9. We are thinking of running a Merc 200 (20 horsepower). The fun most definitely is in the build and pride of owning a boat YOU built! See Clark Craft's website for many many different boat kits. The kit comes with pre-cut pieces. Can be built with handtools and clamps etc. My project I had to trace out full size plans and make each part as part of my high school woods project. See "How to build a Boat" video for build process

That's awesome, what a great project. A few tips, once you put a heavier motor on it, it might want to purpos (bounce). You can do 2 things, either add some stationary trim tabs or add some ballast weight up front, like jugs of water etc. Just enough to move the center of gravity forward where it was...good luck, great job!!!
@moviemakerkeith11 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The 15 goes well but we do have 70's black Merc 200, underrated 20 hp. That sure would make the boat move out! I'd be sure to make a video if/when that motor is on the boat.

Thanks, the exhaust does "air out" but thats not why I wear ear protection. I come from a family that has sensitive ears (tinnitus) and since the motor is close to the operator it causes my ears to ring much louder than they normally do after running the boat. I bought an SPL meter and plan to see how loud it is this year.

Cool boat. It's great when you have an idea and make it yourself. It's frustrating though when everyone is telling you it can't be done. I really hate that kind of negative energy, especially when you're trying to problem solve. But it all good when you finally prove them all wrong. All the loudmouthed critics suddenly become quiet. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. Anyone who creates something goes through that. Anyway, great job; and, although it may not be "perfect," it's yours (you created it); and the next one will be even better. Enjoy!! Thanks for sharing...

I have a mini most hydroplane that my dad built with a 6hp evinrude. It fits two people and is actually pretty darn fast. The thing handles waves like boat twice the size. It slides alot though because we only have two runers on the bottom but the sliding is actually really fun.

I measured it with the SPL meter and got 85 to 96 db at trolling speeds and 103 to 105 db at the drivers position at full speed. The motor is louder because the exhaust is airing out as it is jacked up higher and the cover is off

Cool build! All you need now is a 1950's Mercury Kiekhaefer 20H with the full race lower unit. Hal Kelly Jupiter with Mercury 20H
@moviemakerkeith13 жыл бұрын
@WhazzupPhil The boat's transom is a 21 inch high transom made for a "long shaft" engine. We converted the 15 to a longshaft and ran it without the jackplate in the first Speed Testing video. Barely pumped water on plane as it was creating a whirlpool around intake. Engine needs to be jacked up about a half inch more but the jackplate works in 1 inch increments at the moment. The jackplate lets me run any SS 18" motor and adjust height accordingly. Is a cleaver prop essentially a surfacing prop?
@moviemakerkeith13 жыл бұрын
@ScottAtwater1 The Fastwin 15 is a good reliable motor for that boat, but i'll agree its a Mercury kind of boat
@WhazzupPhil13 жыл бұрын
@MovieMakerKeith OK.Yes a cleaver is a surfacing prop, I'm sure you can buy one from Ron Hill who specializes in small race props. How high is the bullet to the sponsons ? What's your current top speed & what are you aiming for ?

Dude, your the man, we just can't figure out why the lamer video is 30 times more popular then the real 30 times better boat here now its been further engineered? I appreciate this video better. Good lesson in social Engineering too/:)
@jamiehankins225112 жыл бұрын
Not much. But it will run leaner so you will have to reset the carb a little richer :) My father, Fred Hankins, set a few world records in the late 50's and early 60's with those old OMC outboards. I think one of them was like 62 mph with an old v-4 50hp Johnson. He has an old black and white photo of it. Next time I go visit him Ill get that picture and scan it so you can see the record and boat / motor he used.

Looks good. When you're done with fine tuning you're engine you want to use. Look for a jackplate and a cleaver prop.. You can get a lot more speed with it.

great job man, I have a 1958 cadillac constelletor 14 ft has 30 hp johnson sea horse I was wondering what the hose is for on your water inlet ?
@moviemakerkeith9 жыл бұрын
The stock inlets on the motor didn't pick up enough water so the motor would heat up a bit too much. The hose scoops up plenty of water so it guarantees the motor will cool well. The additional drag takes off a few MPH from the top end speed but it works well.
@moviemakerkeith12 жыл бұрын
I'll keep that in mind when I take the boat out this year. I like to tweak the boat using different props and jack and trim setting so I'll have to try that out too. How much louder did it make the motor?

I love the concept. But if it were me, I would've moved the seat up about a foot, and put the gas tank behind it. This would've helped you to plane off better, and also got the tank behind you incase of an emergency. If you hit a log, and the gas tank ruptures, guess where the gas is going to go? lol. Still, for a high schooler, and his dad, in a garage. Freakin awesome!

@moviemakerkeith10 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes actually! My Dad and I just recently upgraded the motor to a 1971 Mercury "200" 20 hp. It needs a higher pitch prop to go faster as I don't want to over rev it, but a 19 foot Eliminator Daytona clocked me doing 30 with more throttle to go. Keep your eyes peeled for videos soon!
@jamiehankins225112 жыл бұрын
Just came across this video. Being an old man lol I cut my teeth on those old engines. There is one more thing you can do to it to squeeze a little more speed out of it. The "breather" should be taken off. It was originally designed to be a tuned air intake and sound box. But, it was found out a long time ago, it actually killed performance of the motor. Take it off and adjust the carb again and you will see a marked improvemen. Just some input from an old skool marine mechanic.

I would say you need a mercury 25ss with the quicksilver 1 to 1 racing lower unit with the right prop you could go say 65 mph.
@WhazzupPhil13 жыл бұрын
Have you tried removing the jackplate & raising the motor more ? All the weight's is at the back & the jackplate is moving the CG back even further. Since you have a LWP you could start by putting the gearcase bullet level with the sponsons & work your way up. And a cleaver prop would better for top speed.

Nahh maybe 100. Suprisingly these boats are faily easy to build. We have a mini Most monoplane. My dad bought the materials, made the boat and took it out in the same day! And the primer was still tacky hhaaahah. This is a very nice looking boat though.
@moviemakerkeith10 жыл бұрын
snowboardingking8 Thanks! I believe I estimated it was around 400 hours to build. These Clark Craft boats come in kits with all the pieces pre cut which would speed up the build process dramatically. I had to trace out and make each piece which took alot longer as part of the challenge of the project for my class. With the kit, it would go together pretty fast. The Mini Most was one of the hydros I considered building I like that one too

Only shortcoming I see is no leg room. Very cramped. Why couldn't legs be given space forward under the hood so to speak?
@moviemakerkeith7 жыл бұрын
Joseph Hinton at the center of thr boat in front of the steering wheel is a bulkhead similar to the transom for framing and strength. Under the hatch cover is where the gas tank is on the other side of the bulkhead. It wouldn't fit if the tank was moved forward as well as the bulkhead. I'm a relatively small guy though so if I use a pad to sit on and sit with my back against the transom I can stretch my legs out full. If I use my removable seat then my legs are bent a little bit but still comfortable. Thanks for your interest!
