He used heat vision to detach the shuttle from the plane and to turn shards of falling glass into sand, bc I think that's actually where we get glass from. Superheated sand. Anyway, he used ice breath to put out a fire in the tunnels that, if it had reached the end, would have leveled half of Metropolis due to some kind of power plant or oil refinery being at the end of them.
