To be fair if the jet engine has been put correctly (ie. nothing obstructing the jet from intaking air) it could probably be competent enough to go into the double digits.

That isn't really the issue. If you want to use a gas turbine engine (of which a jet engine is one possible type) to power a boat, you don't just bolt it on and direct the thrust backwards. That's never going to overcome the drag of the hull, especially in this case with those big oil drums hanging off the side, producing even more drag. Real jet boats use a gas turbine engine with a free power turbine bolted to the back (instead of a jet acceleration nozzle) to convert the thrust into rotational mechanical power in a driveshaft, aka torque. Then use this mechanical power to drive a more conventional marine propulsion unit, either a propeller or a water jet. Usually with a step-down gearbox, because the RPM of the power turbine is way too high to drive the propeller. This is basically the same as a turboprop engine on an aircraft, the only difference being that you're driving a propeller optimised for water, rather than one optimised for air. Either way, this is a much more efficient way of utilising the power output of the engine. Plus with the power driving a propeller (or water jet), the boat will accelerate fast enough to get up "on the plane", which massively reduces the drag on the hull and allows it to accelerate further to even higher speeds.

You forgot the part in Oh Canada where James left his SUV and used the boat he was towing to get to the finish line across the lake. The boat was so slow and uncontrollable and within a short distance from the finish line after Clarkson and Hammond got there, it started to leak and sink and James went overboard in the freezing cold lake.

I don’t know why, but every time Richard complains about boating and then mentions that he’s from Birmingham. I don’t know why, but it always irritates me. I mean, I know he mentions that Birmingham in England if I recall, correctly is not very close to the sea as Jeremy pointed out in the boating episode, he did mention that it was full of canals. There’s also the fact that I don’t understand why actually if you really think about it neither Richard or James hate boating. Honestly going boating is a lot of fun. Now OK it may be that the two of them didn’t grow up in that kind of environment. maybe Jeremy did although I’m not sure.

OK dumb American question here. Why does Richard constantly say that he’s from Birmingham whenever dealing with water? I mean don’t know the geography of the British Isles that well. So I would assume it’s a town near the center of the isles but I’m not sure.
