"You're only as good as your drummer". One of the last great rock bands when they had Topper Headon on the drum throne. I saw them live with and without him.....there was no comparison and Jonesy knew it. Then Joe fired Jonesy (which was like firing Jimmy Page from Zeppelin for God's sake) it was all over. Such a loss. But we still have this MAGNIFICENCE.

@@princeofcupspoc9073 True! I heard that as well. Sadly Joe passed to soon. I also heard that this reunion of the Clash was so close to happening, they wanted to get back out on the road, and when Joe did pass, they strongly considered a sort-of- tribute show, or tour with Tim Armstrong on vocals. Of course he’s no Strummer, but what a great choice for a tribute to Joe. IMO, Armstrong would have been the only choice!

The Clash played at the Capital Theatre Sydney in 1982 . The had 7 consecutive nights of concerts where the concerts were touted as the Magnificent Seven . I recall to this day as I was 17 that they were incredible to say the least. I bought "Sandinista" as a 3 record vinyl for 18.99 at "Sam The Record Man" on Young St. in Toronto when it was released, (going rate for a reg LP being 7.99 at the time). Here we are 40 years later (Sam's is gone) and it's still in my regular rotation and I could say it would be my ONE choice for that "deserted island" only record I could have, because of the pure and genuine innovative goodness packed into it. The Clash, and Joe Strummer primarily, really had his finger on the pulse and his good ear to the ground at this point in time, and this record spelled out what was coming down the pike (and influenced it to a certain degree) , as well as exposed people to genres of music they might not encounter in their local scene. "London Calling" was nominated as best recording of the decade in the 80's, but for me personally, Sandinista is it. I was fortunate to live through this time, but we didn't have the access to all the great video footage instantly available like we do now, and there in, is the gold in the treasure chest.

This is just beyond belief, the power and intensity is incredible! Love how this is very different to the album version too. By punk standards I suppose I would be classified as a yuppie or a pop music dork-but one thing I know for sure The Clash are fucking awesome and I totally get why legions of fans consider them the best ever. They are easily the most influential band of their era. This song right here is one of my favorite songs of all time-and this version is pretty killer.I don't think you can categorize The Clash as punk rock- I think their style is so unique and original that they are in that rare position of being a group that is not defineable. That is a very rare and prestigious honor.

I agree, but Tommy Gun, Complete Control and a few others were defiantly punk songs. Just a lot better than most!

Given that this classic was one of the very first songs to bring rap out of NYC and show it to the world I could not agree with you more.

im reading alot of these comments ya'll have, and usually when something gets this much praise - it tends to get out-of-hand, over- the- top, it becomes unreal- but this is a rare situation, this time all the praise im reading - is true! its not unreal, The Clash- the only band you cant 'over-do-it' with your comments, its opposite you cant praise them enough : )

Man! we waited all week for this show to air. It was so exciting to see them live. Back in the days before MTV and KZbin. God Bless Tom Snyder! (yellow smokers teeth 'n all).

I effing LOVE this..even better than the studio version. Mick's guitar is awesome, and Joe's intensity? It's like he's from some alternate reality - the greatest frontman ever. They had it all - talent, passion, originality, looks and style.

I recommend Sandinista! (This whole thing of "it would make a great single, or even *double* album"... bollocks. It is what it is, and that's a beautifully sprawling tapestry of Delights - great songs, great dubs, great general bits and pieces. Good times. And it's not like they ever tried to sell it as a Triple Album in the wanky old overblown Prog sense... it just is what it is. And what it is is damn fine).

Saw them Live in Paris in 1980. I was 15 by then. I had what we called a Walkman at that time and I will always remember that LONDON CALLING played both sides in a row will dry empty the batteries. So I had two sets of batteries always with me. And SANDINISTA remains one of the greatest ROCK Symphony of all times. Mind You :-) Tks Joe !
