It always amazes me that when these boats flip, the throttle man rarely cuts the throttle. Qatar was still hard on throttle when it was clear they were gonna flip. Victory cut the throttles and it stopped the boat from flipping. I really don't understand it, and I am an offshore racing fan and know alot about it.

Wow all these views of this are incredible. Glad everyone was ok tho. Question to those that might know, was the 2 coming so close and taking the air down force or side draft off the other a probable aide to this wreck? Nascar and NHRA are the obvious comparisons with the air down forces and drafts so interested to see or find out if something occurred causing the 2 to go up?
@PayNoTaxes0GetNoVote3 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing it was the extra air off the front of the lead boat that caused it to go over. If second boat was back a bit further, there wouldn't have been so much air.
@JetFire97 ай бұрын
Yeah, you see nothing but sky and you keep the throttle on full. Real smart.
@carmelpule69548 жыл бұрын
The reason for this crash was because Qatar approached the leading boat much too close and when it was midway along the leading boat it came into a zone of the higher pressure air being thrown out from under the leading boat. These boats, travelling at that speed ram air under their hulls and they are marginally stable. That sudden change of conditions meeting a zone of slightly higher pressurised from the bows while its own could not escape as the hulls were too close, caused the incident. Once the angle of attack/ incidence became greater , the boat lifted. The leading boat did not suffer, because her conditions basically remained the same. I wonder if as an emergency a small drag parachute tied to the transom would have saved the day and for normal control a tailplane and a rudder at the back would add another control system if ever the boat becomes airborne, as with rudders and throttle alone one cannot meet control in all conditions or states these fast boats may get into. I feel the pilots should be given a detailed course in the aerodynamics showing the states when these boats are travelling alone, near one boat and when sandwiched between two boats.

Good points. Amazing how the trailing boat was affected by air or climbing the rooster tail of the leading boats. Then the incident with the leaders, all related. I think an adjustable front wing like unlimited hydro use to dump the air that's going under the tunnel and force it over the top of the boats would work on this hull design. It sure does on unlimited. Most of the time anyways. Lol

Watch the video of the 8000hp Spirit of Qatar on its 244mph run at Lake Of The Ozarks USA in 2014. This is a "shootout" where the boats can get up to 40mph before they reach the starting buoys. On the first run Qatar's chutes deployed at just over 100mph and they only ran 210. Their last run of the day they were at 150mph and the bows started to rise. Throttleman John Tomlinson(he and Steve Curtis are the two best Stick men in Offshore racing) cut the throttles bringing the bows back down to the water. Driver Sheikh Hassan al-Thani kept the boat on track and radar clocked them at 244mph. I have to congratulate Tomlinson for likely saving the boat and to say that they most likely would have broken 250 if the wind had not caused the forks to rise up. Well done JT and Sheikh Hassan!!

Why would they not have a wing that pops out at over certain angles Thus allowing it's nose to be flown or trimmed down and stabilized ? (as soon as its auto activated the steering wheel just needs to be pushed forward as in like a plane! the only time the wheel can be moved forward is when the system is activated all other times its locked and the wing retracted ) It would cost stuff all to incorporate and save lives and no doubt more important to them Money !!

+Wombat situation room My thoughts exactly. Sort of like the roof flaps in NASCAR that deploy when they get airborne.
@PaddleDogC57 жыл бұрын
it all happens in a nano second. NASCAR wings work after the crash. You're all trimmed out for maximum speed on the edge doing 100 or way more. Then something unsettles the boat like air or water and bingo you over. It's a fine line even in calm water. It's greed that gets you in trouble. The other boat is creeping away slightly you have to ask yourself do I trim more or let him go and be safer. Other boat has more power and is trimmed in a bit more so you compensate by getting more of your boat out of the water and you're gone.

I thought the same thing..a gyro for an rc plane is like $30..it will make the plane super stable even on windy days. Just a matter of having the proper wing and and programmable software and sensors that can read angle as well as rate of angle change...nobody on the planet is faster than a. computer...try ridding a 200 hp motorcycle with traction control...lay it over in a corner and pin the throttle...the computer is fast enough to let it slide a little...just to let ya know you are close to the edge...and than catch it..and do it again....anything to make boat racing safer is a good thing.

The WHOLE point of being a catamaran/air entrapment hull design is to get OUT of the water. On cars you NEED ground contact to go fast, on boats the opposite, REDUCE the friction. By your logic, race planes should stay on the ground to avoid crashing.
