Same with the 319s, it depends where you sit in the motor coach, if you sit in the middle which is above the transformer then like you say it will be quite hard to hear the motors which are each end of the coach. :)

Hey thanks for commenting! The best place to record the motor sounds is indeed under the pantograph.

I love these Motor Sounds and the pendos which sound like Boeing 747s

Thanks! Yeah the old Thameslink livery is getting worn but the 319/3s are being repainted as we speak.

went on one of these units for the first time on saturday, they sound great when on AC, but I hated the interiors lol
@class31315 жыл бұрын
Yup I know but the transformers are what make that buzz in the middle of the coach!

right~ they also got the GEC motors.....thesemotor sounds are great

thankfully london northwestern railway and northern still have 319s. the /0s, /2s and /4s are with london northwestern railway while the /3s are with northern. however, northern's 319/3s will be replaced by the 323s from west midlands railway. london northwestern railway's class 319s will be replaced by the 730s

Awesome upload, sounds like our 318s, and a bit like our 320s but they buzz so loudly it's actually quite hard to hear the motors!

This sounds exactly like MTR's MLR trains, except without the humming sound at the beginning

Search up class 317, it sounds more like them

you know these units look great in the new FCC and Southern livery, but FCC really need to get on with replacing that shoddy old blue and grey, it just looks shoddy. oh yeah and you are correct, they do sound great.
@pacer14208616 жыл бұрын
where is the best place to sit to hear the motors properley? I tried my best on 321s but all you really hear is the pantograph buzz, I like to hear both!
@ChrisRichmond14 жыл бұрын
@Ayman170Turbostar Thats the thing though, they don't! the 313s and 315s have a different gearing so they sound like they accellerate quickly and also have a slight different tone. The 317s, 318s and 321s have a different chopper chopping at 50hz which can get quite annoyingly loud. The 319 chopper hums alot faster, producing the distinct sound. However, I think the gearing is the same as the 317s, 318s and 321s.
@soundseeker6316 жыл бұрын
Are you sure about that? I thought it was only the pantograph car that housed the traction motors, as per the 321s and 317s.
@class31316 жыл бұрын
Nah, 319s were built by BREL in York with 4 GEC G315BZ motors per motor coach.
@thetrainsrock12 жыл бұрын
yes they sound like the 315s aswell and thats because they all have the same traction motors
@class31316 жыл бұрын
Right under the pantograph. You know you're under it as the celling is lower and there is a bit that comes down between the seats.

What is it that makes the continous whine/hum sound as the train is pulling away? You can hear the low hum of the transformer and the accelarating whine of the traction motors...so its not that. I thought it might be something to do with the rectifiers or something but it does it both when on third rail and when on OHL. Anyone know??
@class31314 жыл бұрын
@Ayman170Turbostar I agree with 317s, 318s, 321s, 320s, 455 and 456s but nothing like the rest

IS it build by Metro Cammell before 1980? Because the sound really like Hong Kong's MLR Train!
@the_cortelyou_boi4 жыл бұрын
No.... its made by BREL

I am really not sure mate, I don't think so, specially about the gearing as the max speed of the 319 is 100mph
@pacer14208616 жыл бұрын
I rather like 319's motors, but I will say I still prefer 465's ;)

@class313 Also they sound exactly the same as the Royal Mail class 325s

@resigamer17 they have the same traction motors IIRC
@class31314 жыл бұрын
@resigamer17 That's what I do too, St Albans to St Pancras is a nice run for them! I've recorded one 319 at 105mph at Radlett!

@EWS37109 As have I (and continue to do so!) I love the units, comfortable, make this great sound and just have character behind them in my opinion
@class31312 жыл бұрын
@thetrainsrock what? No they don't. 315s have different GEC motors.

Same traction gears like the unrefurbished A60/62 Metropolitan Line trains?
@Doomsday206016 жыл бұрын
These might be a mid 80s disaster but I like them and their traction motors. Put these motors on a slam door and that'll do fine. Oh wait, you can't because they've bloody well gone. 5*/5*

These mothers do fly i took one from Luton to London and we quickly reached 100mph that must be doing that speed at 5:00 to 5:22 and the motor coach was shaking and vibrating as though it could leave the track any second quite riviting if you ask me.

@class31316 жыл бұрын
It only happens on the OHL. When the 319 goes onto the DC lines this doesn't happen so I guess its the transformers.

It is the transformer that makes the hum when on AC. In DC mode the motors just take the straight line voltage. The transformer on a 317 hums even more loudly thatn a 319.
@4vepvik7818 жыл бұрын
+Edward Pearce rubbish!!,,the traction motors are dc units and when under 25kv pantograph ac current ,have that current rectified to 750v dc..The motors whine is generic whether under 750v dc 3rd rail or 25kv ac overhead pantograph.INNIT!!!?? .The motors run 750vdc at all times.
@EM-yk1dw8 жыл бұрын
+4vep vik Sorry Vik and thanks for correcting my comment. That is what I meant, the motors just take 750v dc on either AC or DC, on AC the transformer steps it down from 25kv ac and the rectifier converts it to dc, am I correct? What I would like to know is what the whine is as the unit takes power from a stand? Is that the chopper control/resistances?
@4vepvik7818 жыл бұрын
All pre thyristor ac/brushless traction motors were whiney.A generic english electric design.probably the step down gear from the traction motor to the driven axle.Not 100% certain but it is from the traction motors.If You look at old slam door clips of electric multiple units.You'll hear that motor melody
@EM-yk1dw8 жыл бұрын
