@marinedalek
@marinedalek 3 жыл бұрын
The sparks appear to come from the front of the cab, which suggests that something (a dropper?) was hanging down from the contact wire just to the right of the frame and shorted against the bodywork of the unit. Assuming it was a dropper, it would then have caught on the pantograph as it passed underneath causing it to bounce as seen. 350s only have one pantograph, and that was well out of the way when the initial short occurred.
@marchemsley1210
@marchemsley1210 3 жыл бұрын
It turns out the explosion and sparks you see at the front was a relay box that is to the right of the track as we see it, when the short happened it literally blew the box.

Most electric trains have a battery on board to power essential systems in case of emergency, and to for lowering and raising the pantograph when being stored, although if it's just being stabled overnight the pantograph normally just stays raised because it's easier.

Apart from 3rd rail is banned and incredibly inferior to OH
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin 3 жыл бұрын
@@wharris302 Like most things, it is a case of horses for courses. HV overhead is certainly the most efficient energy-wise for long distance electrification, but in terms of infrastructure, costs, 3rd. rail can beat it easily with minimal disruption, resistance to damage and if boring tunnels, they can be made considerably smaller and thus cheaper. The ban on 3rd rail was arbitrary and nonsensical. A few stretches of in-fill 3rd rail would eliminate a large portion of diesel working. Also, if 3rd rail was used through the confines of Bath (the Hitachi Javelin bi-mode seems to work well) then the full electrification to Brstol TM might have been achieved without upsetting the old farts of Bath.
@extrude22
@extrude22 3 жыл бұрын
@@MervynPartin I'm not sure if the tunnel boring point still stands since all new rail tunnels must have an evacuation walkway for emergencies. This means that any tunnel with a walkway is already large enough for overhead lines.

@@MervynPartin Third Rail is not safe. Also in-fill third rail has been show to be more expensive than OLE.
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin Жыл бұрын
@@A-Trainspotter-From-Berkshire I would like to mention part of an article by Ian Walmsley, formerly of Porterbrook the train leasing company and now a contributor to Modern Railways:- "When adjusted for the size of each network the overhead system accounted for 0.23 Fatalities and Weighted Injuries (FWI) per thousand track kilometres, and third rail 0.47". Nearly all the incidents were due to trespass and of course the likelihood of death with 25kV is practically guaranteed. So, while on paper, 3rd. rail would seem more dangerous, I have no sympathy for trespassers seeking Darwin Awards. As for cost, the overhead electrification of the Great Western has almost killed off hopes for the rest of the country. Plus with 3rd rail, there is no need to replace any bridges, or increase the height of tunnels.

TheDrsEnviro200 lmao again how these British rail fans put their personal preferences over actual benefit of the railwwlays when it comes to speed, safty and overall efficiency overhead wire is be all and end all of electrification and there's just not debating that. the mere fact that you say 3rd rail is better proofs that you have no idea how 3rd rail works 1st of all 3rd rail is connot withstand speeds past 100mph or 160 kph whilst overhead has no limit to how fast trains can go this why all high speed networks have are operated by AC overhead wire. 2nd 3rd rail is extremely dangerous you can talk all day about a broken pantograth how ever their countless videos of trains on fire because of a complication with the shoe and in my opinion a train on fire with people inside is far more dangerous than a broken piece of metal on top of a train. there's also the fact that with 3rd rail you can die just by falling onto the train track whilst unless you jump from a bridge a land balls first onto a overhead wire there no you will die from falling of a platform with overhead wire. 3rd as time goes by and trains get faster 3rd rail will become a thing of the past due to 3rd rail not being able to withstand speeds above 160 kmph it has been discussed as to wether the whole south should be converted to overhead wire. and last but not least overhead wire is just far more aesthetically pleasing.
