For a little bit of reference as to why the Pendo failed: It was stabled overnight in Carlisle, the OHLE was isolated but the Pendo was still powered up. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue as the Pendo will trip when the battery drops below a certain voltage. Unfortunately, there was an issue with this set which meant it didn't trip and the batteries went flat. Once recovered to Longsight it got hooked up to a battery charger and after a few hours, it was all up and running again, and the issue with the tripping was fixed. It's fairly rare when a Pendo needs to be rescued as most issues don't stop the train from running. And for those wondering, yes, the coupler and coupler hatch are a right pain... Even with a fully charged air supply!

@@steveburn8125 I think 53, 8 car Pendolinos were built in the uk, at Washwood Heath, however some of these were lengthened to 9 or 11 car trains and re-numbered to class 390/1 instead of class 390. However I also think the remaining Pendolinos that were built for the fleet were made in Italy.

After working for 10 years in the S&T dept at Carlisle i have walked down Platform 1 many times. The track is looking no better than it did when i left in 1981!

@Allan Pape My grandfather worked in the old 12b upperby steam loco sheds from 1960 to 1990. He was also a steam loco fireman, train guard, and worked on the platforms with his signal lamp and flags, he loved his job and that's why I love steam trains, favourite is the flying Scotsman and the A4 mallard, got a lot of his old pics and even his old british rail id card and 12b pin badge for his jacket, and I still have his old blue jacket that he wore whe shoveling coal into the fire as well ❤.

Just love seeing videos filmed in carlisle as my grandfather used to work in the old 12b upperby steam loco sheds from 1960-1990. He loved his job, he was also an active man in the steam loco cabs as well as he was a fireman and also served as a signalman on the plaftorms in the station with his flags and lamps, and was also a train guard, he has led me to love the old steam beasts and just seeing this one pass by while the avanti was being rescued was amazing, ive also still got my grandfathers old blue trainyard jacket and his old 12b badge that he wore on his jacket and his british rail id, he lived up near the racecourse along the public footpath with my grandmother and my mother and uncle around 1989 and when he worked on the maryport line and finished his shift he would stop at the second bridge and then walk up a set of train engineer steps that came out in to the farmers field and he would walk up it that led him on to the public path to his house, if you carry on walking any further you reach durdar road and the racecourse which would be to the right. He passed on the 26th of september 2022, but just watching this brings back a lot of happy memories. Thank you for filming this, and ive always wanted to be a train driver or conductor my self but due to having epilepsy im unable to, but it hasnt stopped me from still learning and i have learnt alot about trains over the years just by doing research on google, and also playing Train Sim World 3 on Xbox, my favourite steam loco is the flying Scotsman, just seeing her clock up every second of speed makes me so happy and joyful and happy and I can remember as well when I went to the national railway museum as a kid and saw those huge steam beasts, hey they may look small on a photo but once you stand next to one your gonna be the small one 😂❤

Good to hear that story; the human side is just as interesting and it's great that you have a passion for the railway. Your condition doesn't necessarily stop you from doing some jobs - the railway family is still quite large!😀

Would have been perfectly do-able as well , mainline steam Loco's have air brake , just use the 57 as barrier waggon for the Delner coupling

Great footage. For trivia, 57 years ago, as class 47, D1901, Lady Penelope hauled the last train out of Cheltenham Spa St James in 1966, four years after Royal Scot was withdrawn.

@@forresg500 Only about 550 tons so quite easy for a 57 , would think it could haul nearly 4 times this weight , our Class 60's at IMM have hauled near 4'000 tons with one engine

It's absolutely crazy there are 3 different generations of trains in this video. And its the "old guard" yet again bailing the new one out. As an Austrian buff guy once said, "Old, not Obsolete". Seems to be the case for the 37s and 57s which never seem to be obsolete in their function on the mainline!

Old guard? Those 57s were rebuilt with new engines and everything 20 years ago, other than the bodyshell its practically the same age as the train it's hauling.

@@TheCatOfWarCSGO a lot of the components used in the 57s werent new, the engines were reconditioned - not new built, and the traction motors and alternators were recovered from 56s. the only new thing in them was the cab furnishing

@@Trainman10715 They look like Class 47 bogies and wheel sets , can you hang 56 traction motors on them ? Agree with you though it ain't a new loco , had look round Class 57 in Brush works whilst in construction quite a lot is reused , went their to rob fuel rack and rocker gear of Class 60 for one of our IMM 60's

The fold-down coupling on the diesel is clever. I'm not so sure about the extendable drawbar on the electric - it looked like it wouldn't lock into position!

They were remanufactured from Class 47's so may well have a similar engine as they replaced the original with a EMD 12-645

It's a Dellner coupling. Integrated air and electrical lines so all connections are completely automatic.

This is quite common place In Ireland with 071 class locos and 201s rescuing dart trains and the commuter 29000 and intercity 22000 rail cars

Doors that don't won't open and what looks to be miss aligned couplers I was questioning whether the 57 could couple up at all!

Hated being recovered as a driver, you had to have full brakes on as the loco rams you, and remain on the brakes as he does a pull test, only after which point you can release brakes and get out. Looks like some issue here probably with the signalling through the coupler. Missed my brakes once and the loco just pushed me back a few feet before re-applying the brakes.

You are right, some faults can migrate to the assisting loco, you just hope the train crew know what they are doing.

No, it's just easier to recover a service by hauling it somewhere where it can get properly looked at. Coming from somebody who's worked on them, Pendolinos are incredibly reliable.

I dont know where the numbers can be found, but with anything mecahnical I would want to look at levlised cost of ownership and avlaiabilty before making this kind of a statement

@@WindyJAMiller Right. There's a huge selection bias in seeing one video of the thing breaking down and complaining about it, while ignoring the however-many-hundred times it worked properly. Yes, it's awkward to get the Dellner coupler out, but it's only needed on rare occasions, so the front end is optimized for aerodynamics on the vast majority of days when it's working properly. The pinned comment explains that there was an unusual fault condition, which led to the Pendolino's battery running flat. That meant they had no compressed air to extend the Dellner, which is why you see them connect up an air line from the 57. In other words, it took so long because multiple things went wrong, in an unusual way.

I've had this before with a truck bogged down and whilst waiting for a tow out we sorted out the towing bracket. Surely they could have saved some time if the Avanti had been prepared before the Thunderbird was lined up?

Time may not have been an issue, depends what diagram had been agreed for the removal of the rake and the arrival of the 57. I suppose it's indicative of the reliability of the Pendolino that there weren't staff that familiar with opening the, obviously very stiff, cover. That they needed an external air supply to push the Delner out probably indicates that the unit has been sat down for a fair while too.

Are the apparent differences in coupler/drawbar height bewteen the Class 57 and the Pendolino the result of their relative ages, or origins, or measurement units (Imperial vs Metric), or purposes (general freight vs dedicated passenger train-sets)?

Not really any of the above. The only reason the Pendolino can be coupled to anything else is so that they can be towed when they break down or if the overhead power has to be turned off. Because of that, the front end is designed primarily with aerodynamics in mind -- they're optimized for the 99% of the time they're running on their own, rather than the 1% of the time that they need to be coupled to something.

@@beeble2003 until 2012 there was london-holyhead services operated by 390s with them being dragged by 57s between crewe and Holyhead, so the couplers got used a lot more than just for moving them in emergency, although even when they were used frequently the coupler hatches on the 390s seemed to be pretty unreliable often just being left open

Does the train pipe couple through the Dellner coupling ? does Pendolino have normal 5 bar brake pipe ?

All the air and electrical connections go through the Dellner, yes. I don't know about the brake system on the Pendolino, but I imagine it's standard, or you'd need separately configured rescue locomotives for every class.

@@beeble2003 I was (retired ) freight so its all 5 bar Bp for me , but know from my BR days with bsi rescue coupler (class 15x/ 140's ) It was basically train wire no pipe , so all our loco could supply through bsi coupling was main res . Just curious as we use to supply Class 67's to haul class 91sets when they were diverted by non electrified routes (they use 5 bar pipe) ,but now we have class 800's EMU sets . I have no idea of the brake systems on these fixed set EMU's/DMU's all I know is the older one's had no 5 bar Bp and I'm pretty sure the 185's connect electrically for the brakes (daughter drives them )

at 3:28, I bet the HST driver was saying a few hail mary's, that the diesel was assisting him!, and NOT the steam loco, which looks like he may have about to have done so, seeing the layout of the tracks.

I bet if Royal Scot could talk it'd say, "Newfangled nonsense. Back in my day, we'd either bring our trains home on one cylinder if we had to or face the cutter's torch. When these cheap thing breakdown they just wail for a fitter."

There *was* a clip on tail light, on the back of the Pendolina. Seen it clear as day as it pulled away. Only option they had as the panto was down and the train was without power. The rescue loco didn't appear to be supplying ETS to the failed unit.

Don't think so. 57307 was originaly 47225. According to the Class 47 website, it was delivered new to Cardiff Canton and stayed there until moving to Tinsley in 1987. By that time, I'm pretty sure all the Knottingley MGR trains were Class 56-hauled, and 47225 was allocated to a Speedlink pool and painted in Railfreight Distribution livery, when those things became things.

@@pajotero4219 No, they were completely renumbered into consecutive ranges 57001-12, 57301-16 and 57601-5. They were rebuilt from whatever 47s were available and in good condition. Looks like a random mix of 47/0s, /3s and /8s, plus a single /7.

I've just realised that this Thunderbirds appellation is real ! Never initially noticed the name on the side. Are Hiram K Hackenbacker, Geoff, Gordon, Virgil, Parker all represented as well, or is it just LPCW ?

I've only recently begun watching railway videos but it's become apparent very quickly that Avanti has a dreadful reputation with regards to lack of reliability. I'm glad that I don't have to rely upon the UK rail network on a daily basis and I have pity for those that do. Of course, things can only get worse as local and national government morons carry on with their policies of getting cars off the road, there is no way that the country's rail, metro and bus services could cope if suddenly, every car owner decided "I can no longer afford to drive to and from work, the car's going to have to go." There just wouldn't be enough capacity, and it would force politicians to admit that their pie in the sky policies are totally unworkable with what public transport exists at present.

Between 2001 & 2008 I used Virgin West Coast a lot, it was great, yes occasionally we had problems but I could normally rely on getting into the office on time & home that evening. What I’m hearing now is nothing like it was.

@@shaddow1867 exactly I think there will be a tiny faze we’re the amount of failures on pendilinos will increase but that’s just wear and tear cause like you said they’ve done 250 million miles but after that they will be running smooth and efficiently the only reason they didn’t fail as much with virgin was cause of how much newer they were but also partially that virgin took better care of them than a anti

All these advanced locos being pulled by an older loco stil uses for these grand old gals I was brought up just at the end of steam so I loved the locomotive not these long worms you can't beat the sound of a class 52 full throttle

I remember when the 47s were on regular front line inter City services, they were way less reliable at 20 than the pendolinos are at 20, breaking down way more often, the only reason the thunderbird seems more reliable is, they're basically a new engine on old frames/body completely refurbed, rarely used and never on high speed high loaded and intense services and when they were, they had less availability than the pendolino, so not such a great engine as you think. And the 47s were made by Brush Traction.

@@Scots_Diesel - You beat me to it on every point. Nostalgia is a lovely thing, but the 47s were indeed very unreliable locos. Worth remembering that the 47s were retired from the Wherry Lines due to constant breakdowns and replaced with 37 short consists; 37s are older than 47s! (usually by 5-8 years). Some of the 57s have a rebuid date of 2004/5, making their engines and running gear newer than the Pendolinos 😄

No passengers on board and lady Penelope has the coupling because it is a thunderbird locative which we’re all fitted with this coupling so they could carry out these rescues of pendalinos.

No. Manouevres like this require constant live communication with the signalman. No movements whatsoever are made without approval. The signals are all but redundent in these cases. Especially on such a complex platform as that; with two junctions within 10' of eachother at the end of the platform. The entire 'area' (all of the track that will be used for the positioning, coupling and drawing off manouevres) is protected, and free of any other traffic. Live contact with the signalman is required to change points at each stage.

He would have had authority from the signalman to pass the signal at danger. In the old days would have been a dopsad or a call from the SPT. Guessing it's all done via GSM-R now.

Signal was displaying a single yellow with an ‘M’ in the Theatre box. You see it change to red and the ‘M’ disappear as the loco passes into section.

No air in the air system on the Pendolino. If it still had air supply, you would only need to push a button. So you have to "fight it" to get it open. Same with the retracting coupler. You see they connect an air hose from the locomotive to get it to move forward and engage for coupling.

I just love the irony. Correct me if im wrong but a Pendolino (maybe BR Class 390?) that was built between 2001 - 2004 gets rescued by a Class 57 (which to my knowledge is a modernized Class 47 from 1960) while a Steam loco is happily chugging along on a different track :) Does anyone else feel like we might be moving in the wrong direction here ?? :)

No, we're not moving in the wrong direction. Nobody builds brand-new locomotives just for rescue duty, so the rescue locomotive will inevitably be older than the thing it rescues. Neither the 57 nor the Royal Scot is capable of running at 125mph even once, let alone for several hours a day, every day.

Modern😂 the pendolinos have been running over 20 years on the front line between London and Glasgow that's longer than the kettles, and the pendolinos have less failure rates at over 20 years old than the 86/7's etc did when they reached a similar age and milage

And the class new class 800s are built in the UK with Japanese technology, all the rest are European or Canadian, some built here some not, but certainly no Chinese rubbish as you call it, If the build quality is poor on an ice 8xx class loco it's the BRITISH workforce that caused it.

while what you say is true for actual modern junk, the pendolinos arent one of those, theyre not modern anymore and their build quality is top notch, hence their continued good reliability (when being looked after properly), under virgin the pendolinos were among the most reliable rolling stock on the network. what you said about built quality applies very well to the more recent hitachi trains though

Those 'Thunderbird' class 57's were created specifically as rescue engines for the Pendolino fleet, retro-fitted with matching couplings to aid the rescue 'mission'. So actually they were intended for this purpose.

So many are required for the WCML contract to rescue the 390's etc. A new contract will go to tender and whoever wins it(LSL or ROG for example) will provide the required 6 class 57/3's for it. In the meantime DRS continue. HTH.
