Striking 80's atmosphere. The amount of teenagers bashing, cabbing or photographing the 40 action is quite incredible. You won't see teenagers bashing or cabbing a Turbostar or Pendolino in such masses now (and all air conditioned stock and tight H&S regulations make this impossible even when they wanted)

oh happy days, nice friendly drivers letting the young uns in the cab, no worries about H&S, and a nice bit of thrash from a venerable 40!

Oh for a time machiene! I live in Hawarden and when i was a kid you could hear a 40 leaving Shotton! And watch it almost all the way to Chester! Then you had em climbing the bank to Hawarden station! Christ they used to struggle! I remember 029 on a railtour about 83 load 11! It was hellfire! Took my kids to see 145 but was dissapointed cos the 67 came back up the gradiant!

Brilliant vid, brings back the memories of the 80's bashing these beasts! Nice to see there's still quality action from that period, many thanks and keep up the good work.

Reminds me of cabbing 40121 at Preston, it had come from Blackpool and was giving way to an electric. The driver sat me in the drivers seat and started giving me instructions, before I knew it, 121 was uncoupled and rolling down platform 3 to the signal. Then the driver said "I better take it from here". I take it 121 was heading to SP for refuelling as she thrashed away up the UF line ironically running ahead of the train it had just come off.

The clip of 40012 leaving man picc light engine after the Skegness (it’s on here) is me on the power handle! Only time I’ve been told to sit in the chair like you was 55009 in 1985. I drove it for about 3 miles on a passenger train on the NYMR, I’d just turned 15!

I was on the morning run with this, but baled at Shotton to have 40044 from Carlisle to Leeds. In the wee small hours of the following morning 40057 worked the Bristol - Glasgow sleepers (load 15) from Preston to Carlisle over the S&C. It wasn't fast, but the NOISE! There were a good few bashers on the train that night, I remember.

Classic Nostalgic Footage from the Early 1980s if I'm right ❤️Definetly remember the Parker Coats with the faux fur hood used to wear one or two of these when I was a Schoolboy ,39 years ago now at 49 ,Feeling nostalgic watching this ❤️❤️❤️❤️🎥Miss those days when Blue Diesel locomotion power ruled the rails .❤️❤️❤️❤️ Nowadays since Privatisation in the Early 1990s to today's Generation of trains ,They don't have the same feel as the classic carriages you could look out from when on a rail journey ,Health and safety BS has seen to that ,Even envy those young lads getting to see the inside of the Class 40 to taking notes from the Driver when Employees looked smart with their BR Hats ,Nowadays it's all H&S nonsense to HI Vis vests ,Take me back to these early times when Thrash was king whatever Class locos operated in the 1970s to the early 1980s .

5:30 Those were the days: real characters, real trains! 🚂👍

I didnt know "Morrissey" from The Smiths worked on the railway and doing a great pose @ 5.31. I'm surprised how good the whistling sound is at Chester, WBQ and Man Vic for the technology of the day. I started videoing 40's in 1981 and always found when I got close to them the whistling would make the auto sound gain turn the volume of it down :(
