It's a funny thing, so called "spotters" have been at the butt end of more than few ridiculing comments over many years but the films they shot are an ever increasingly important historical record of a time that's fast working its way towards being gone from living memory. I'm sure that a great many of us are grateful to you and others like you!

Often it's the mundane bits that turn out to be the most rare. For example there is a class 123 DMU at New Mills at the start of the video, with its distinctive rasping engine noise. They were all withdrawn in 83/84 without anybody taking much notice and none were preserved, so I doubt there is any more video of them on KZbin, at least with sound. Class 40 footage isn't that rare as their last years were meticulously recorded.

Some great footage from the Blue era.... 40057 crossing with D200 is time perfect, very lucky indeed.....I started haulage bashing in 1979 although I had been a spotter for several years previous and traveled the country visiting depots and photographed virtually every class from 01-56 but had a preference to EE built locomotives (55,37 & 40) and have all but 12 class 40s in my photo collection...... I also had 118 for haulage and this really brings back many good memories, thanks for sharing this wonderful selection, top man !!!! 👍🏼🏴🙏🙏🙏😎

Top locomotive I remember them as a kid at guidebridge yard near Ashton-under-lyne it was a storage yard for coal wagons/locomotives class 40s 76s 25s 37s were always on there but the 40s always stood out due to there distinctive whistling engines I was about 8 when i first got into railways so that was 1979-80 to me a 40 is a prototype class 37 with an extra wheel different engine! I love this video especially the shots of Manchester Victoria I live close by to it but now it looks unrecognisable they spoilt it in the late 90s building that arena above the station? I watch this video quite often 10/10 for sound quality and picture quality.😎

Fridays were always the best as all the light engines made their way back to Guide Bridge .It’s all a shadow of its former self the lonely metal stantions for the catenary wires of the woodhead line tell a sorry tale even now 50 years later it still makes me sad .Still that’s progress ?

Found my discs of this footage the other day, so am really pleased. My son, when a lot younger, used to love the scene with 40152 from 1:52 to 2:52 especially with the young lads hanging out of the windows and whooping at the camera. I'm guessing the bloke who jumps in and out of the cab had urgent need of a wazz at the station 🤣

This engine has always been a favourite of mine. Our house used to back onto the St Pancras mainline , between Cricklewood and Hendon and as a child i remember running along the adjacent alley trying to out run coal trains. Excuse my ignorance but can someone tell me why there are another set of wheels forward of the triple set of wheels. In contrast to a class 37 for example. As you can tell i know very little about trains.

@@benconway9010 Power to weight ratio...they weighed 133 tonnes for only 2,000 bhp.
@andrewoverton51703 жыл бұрын
But you need to bear in mind the norm when they were introduced, in the 1950s. What seemed underpowered in later years was not so at that time when you consider the all-in weight of a large steam loco, plus tender, and the power they were putting out (less linearly, in hammer blows, so prone to slipping). You also need to consider the need in that era for a heavy locomotive weight to provide sufficient brake force for unfitted freight trains, something which more powerful but lighter diesels ended up being poorly suited to work, hence the wasteful need for brake tenders.
@nottudyug2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewoverton5170 BUT....probably why the class 37s had possibly the ideal power/weight ratio and ultimately lasted a lot longer on the network. Another awesome machine. Both the 37s & 40s were my favourite locos for different reasons.
