Presentation of the Air Brake Test on a 2011 IC Conventional Style School Bus (Pre-Trip Inspection), using the acronym "SALSSP", in Richmond Hill, Georgia.
S: Safe Start
A: Air Leak Test (static and applied service brake)
L: Low Air Pressure Warning Test
S: Spring Brake
S: Service Brake
P: Parking Brake
The air brake is applied, when the yellow diamond button is pulled. It is released when the same button is pushed.
** At approximately 120 psi, the airdryer pops. It sends bursts of air back to governor to stop the compressor from pumping air. **
** The wheels of the vehicle must be chocked to perform the air brake test. **

congrat .. a good rules . Always be early to the yard get your pre-trip done. keep a good clean bus, stay out of the driver room, leave 30 min early to your route even if they don't pay you, stay away from any drivers who are very negative that goes for the office staff aswell , keep out of dispatch hair, learn as much fast and as you can . Talk with teachers, principles, n staff.. your students and parents is your work so keep a clean safe surroundin, let them know you follow all rules and you would like them too do so as well. be kind wise happy professional person .. let it be seein and sit back and watch your job roll by so fast next thing you know 20 years have passed without you not even knowin it . i alreay have my cdl, have been trying to get my airbrake endorsement. failed first time because lady at MV failed to tell me that i will be taking the WHOLE test as if i was a newbie.. Sure i know a bus, BUT 14 years ago we did not learn under the hood/ brakes. etc.. failed the second time because nobody at the job could help out with training since they are all old school too. lol. so tomorrow i try again.. One thing i noticed in a few of these videos is your first step is to turn bus off, then back to accesory. In the NJ commercial book they just turn the bus off, apply the brake ... everything else is the same.. I'm thinking of doing it like the book says but i'm sure my brain will remember these videos and put it in accessory. lol thanks for all your videos, they are very clear!

Thanks for viewing and for the positive comments, Jean Fetzer. Even though the same basic principles apply to any air brake test, certain details may vary from state to state as you pointed out. Every new driver (or old-timer test for air brakes) must be aware that in many cases, the trainee is expected to automatically perform the air brake test at the end of his / her pre-trip. In Georgia, the examiner is required by the Department of Driver Services (DMV) to keep a poker face and refrain from prompting the trainee in any way. Well intended video but I see some discrepancies, Never apply air to your Service Brake when the Park/Spring Brake is applied. Slow down when fanning off your brakes and let the needle keep up with your foot. Stop for a moment when the Low Air Pressure Warning Light and Buzzer sounds (around 60psi) and tell the instructor at exactly what pressure it happened. Continue, fanning your brakes, and again, stop when your Park/Spring Brakes apply. (approx. 40-20psi) Tell the Inspector at what pressure it happened. Restart the vehicle and build air/ (governor cutout is 120-125psi) Always do your Park Brake Test then do your Service Brake Test, Always !! Never ever apply your Park/Spring Brake when the vehicle is moving.

Even in Georgia where I live and work, the state changes certain PSI numbers and details in procedures from time to time. Andre1 Thank you for watching, Andre. You are not allowed to use any kind of notes, while being tested for your CDL. A good way to memorize and remember is to use acronyms. You can use some that already exist or make up your own, as long as they help you being successful. Also, keep in mind that all the parts that you need to mention and describe will be right there in front of you.

Absolutely. The examiner will. You must remember every step, demonstrate each of them and explain as you go through the entire procedure. Any omission or misstep will make you fail the air brake test. This is why I recommend to practice as often as possible, to increase you confidence level and reduce the amount of pressure you will be under when you get tested. The more you practice, the better it will be.

The video clearly states that the initial drop must be no more than 15 psi and that the additional loss of air must be no more than 3 psi.
