Thank you for doing this. I am retired from driving. I kept my CDL because I bought a Restoring project. A 71 SeaGrave Fire Pumper. I had a Leak in one of my Tanks. From the stuff you teach, I could tell there was something wrong. Limped Fire Rig to my shop. Showed them right were problem was. And told them do repairs, plus full DOT inspection, of Air brake system. This is in part thanks to listening to great instructors like you. So I knew what to look for in Air brake system. I wanted the Fire Rig to let Kids enjoy. Get in cab. It has the opposite type of release for AirBrakes. You pull out nob, for DRIVING. Yes it's not what I'm use too.

In your video you never explain the purpose of a air dryer I have a problem with a safety valve that is attached to an air dryer that sound like a machine gun before it purges The system is on a freightliner chassis and it as 20000 miles on the chassis and air system the governor ,safety valve ,filter dryer filter is new. The purge valve also is new. They problem is the system can not reach a 125 435 PSI at 12:00 rpm so it continues to release air with safety valve the purge system can not work. The purge system will work once you let off of the throttle and go back to 700 rpm the system worked great once you accelerate the system has begin to load the air tanks it does it again the same problem allowing air not to build to a 130 PSI.
@smartdrivetest4 жыл бұрын
Here is the video for the air dryer my friend; kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3PMXmmbisibZtk The safety valves on the system are located on the air tanks. I believe you're talking about the purge valve on the air dryer. I would guess that you either have a problem with the purge valve on the air dryer, or something is wrong with the governor. @@redneckcanuckdieseltech or the dryer has been bypassed. On trash trucks with the high air usage the cartridge ought to be replaced on an annual. Were I'm working now I spent days cleaning tanks and lines replacing valves because the system was full of desiccant bb's. It took a year before the problems went completely away. And they still don't service them until they fail.

Great presentation for the fundamentals. I am using air brake system on a 40 foot diesel pusher class a motorhome. I'm reviewing information for the brake system to help me understand how they work and how to troubleshoot should I have problems. On my last trip out, I noticed the primary system pressure drop off while traveling but build itself back up. Not sure why because I think it should stay at cutout pressure unless I use the brakes which would use some of the air and then build back right away. ???? Any comments or suggestions for me ????????

Smart Drive Test I've always wanted to operate, but slowly pulled towards working on stuff instead. As far as the course--I think you could consider it pre-apprentice. The course is called Motive Power Advance Repair. It's an even mix of automotive and heavy / truck and coach. I'll be ready to hire in either trade and have a good handle on the systems on the equipment and in the garage. I can't wait to be working but I know there's still lots to learn!

Can you explain how the system operates on the road. I’m interested as I don’t quite understand. When I release the accelerator pedal the air breaks engage. What is happening during this stage? Is it correct in saying that with air brakes, the compressed air is keeping the breaks off until you disengage the accelerator? How does this work? Or am I completely wrong and the accelerator pedal has nothing to do with anything?
@smartdrivetest Жыл бұрын
Have a look at this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHfMamhtfMarprc The brake pedal controls the "service brakes" on the vehicle. If you take your foot off the accelerator and the "Jake brake" (auxiliary braking system) is on, the jake brake will activate. Hi I was wondering what the difference between the relay valve and the quick release valve is? My book says they both do the same function..reduce lag time and dissipate air from the break chambers faster.. I’m a bit confused on there difference if they functions are the same ? Thanks
@smartdrivetest3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that can be a bit confusing. Often a quick release valve is part of a relay valve. 2 different valves in one housing. "Quick release" valve, quickly releases air from the system after a service or parking brake application. A relay valve reduces the distance air has to travel to make a service brake application. Consider this e-book for more detailed explanations: www.smartdrivetest.com/airbrakes-cdl-rv/air-brakes-explained-simply All the best, Cheers Rick

Ao if the safety valve ever makes the machine gun sound does that always mean to take it to a mechanic? Or only if it consistently does it? I'm about to go to cdl school and would like to know
@Greatestfratus Жыл бұрын
Here's my work. Semi truck questions: What are the 6 main components for air brakes. 1 Air compressor 2 brake lines 3 brake pedal 4brake foundartions 5 ****the governor***** 6 air tanks What is the purpose of the governor? The governor is what allows the compressed air to be put in and out of the brake system from the engine’s air compressor. (The governor controls the compressor) How are the air tanks the first air brake fail safe? They are the first fail safe because they are what holds the compressed air if there was ever a problem with the air brake line system. They can hold up to 12 to 11 full brake stops. (The air tanks are the fail safe for the engine’s air compressor.) What is the purpose of a drain valve? The purpose of the drain value is to drain any moisture that has made its way into the air brake tanks from moisture build up caused by temperature changes. It’s important to drain your air brake air tanks EVERY DAY, DAILY, so that you can prevent future air brake problems from occurring.(do don’t want them to freeze up) What is the sound of the safety valve? ( at 150 psi) It sounds like a “machine gun.” When it does that there is a good chance there is a problem with the governor rather than the air compressor. Remember the governor is the gate/switch valve which allows more air to come into their system or to prevent more air from coming into the system. The air compressor is working the entire time the engine is on, which produces 800 psi of compressed air. The max psi air pressure in the brake system is 109-135 psi. Thank you for this help.
