Launched in 1959, the S3 power car is powered by an engine-driven compartment imported from Germany, while the locomotive's non-engine-driven compartment and other compartments are manufactured in Sri Lanka. The basic parts required for this are imported and most of the parts of the body are made of wood. Therefore, it has been possible to produce these trains at a lower cost and with a lighter weight. Originally painted red, the train sets were later painted green and yellow in the 1990s.
This train is a 4 compartment train as well as other power packs like S1, S2. It consisted of one power car (drive compartment with engine), two passenger compartments and one rear drive compartment (without engine). Passengers were able to travel in all four compartments.
The most special thing about this train is that it is the only power train used in the country to run a daily train from Peradeniya on the Kandyan Railway. Launched in the early 1960s, the Podimenike train was a two-to-one back-to-back train of this type. (Back to back is the way the two drive compartments with engines are attached to either end of the train). At that time these trains were running on hilly routes from Colombo to Nanu Oya without any problems. Thus, it can be considered that these have been running on the Kandyan route for about 10 years (until the use of W class locomotives on the Kandyan route).
In addition, these kits are widely used for office services in Colombo and suburbs. With the removal of the upcountry road, these were mostly used on the coastal road and on the Kelani Valley road after being converted to wide gauge. Train No. 612 is said to have been destroyed around 1976 by an accident.
Several of the remaining train sets were later deployed in Galle, Matara, Piladuwa, Aluthgama and Avissawella. Although the S3 power train, which was deteriorating over time, was taken out of service around 2000 according to departmental sources, some unofficial sources say that several sets, such as Nos. 605, 613, 616 and 617, ran from time to time until about 2006. Reports from The S3 is the longest running power train in the country, having been completely decommissioned in 2006. It is estimated to be approximately 45 years old. It is reported that some of these remaining compartments are currently decaying at the Ratmalana factory premises.
