Sam's experience was not a one off. He sent away for a replacement and it had the same issues as his original model, albeit not as bad. In addition, other reviewers have had problems with this product. Clearly, Hornby has an issue with quality control.

Excellent review here peter, I will definitely be considering one of these for my fleet as currently I don’t have any black 5s in my collection, only thing I need to do is decide on whether I will get an LMS or a BR one, it’s an overall excellent model packed with some excellent features, definitely one of the flickering firebox, got a few models already with that and it does look great when running, to be honest it does annoy me when people say it’s a gimmick even though old triang toys had them on their models but you never hear anyone say anything about them, the lamps have become a favourite feature for me though, even though they may be overscale I love them on my hornby turbomotive and especially on this model being able to change them that will be fantastic, you made two fantastic trains for the running session here peter, an overall excellent review and even though it’s quite late now I saw your recent community post, congrats on reaching 4K subs.

Agree. I have an old Hornby 8F (the top link version from years ago with a Ringfield motor) It has a glowing firebox and looks awesome.

I have the 20 year old super detailed loco driven model. Runs great, looks great, couples close, and bits don’t fall off…..no way I would pay 200 for this….

I've not had issues with bits falling off on mine. I runs great nooroblems there and I still think it looks great IMO

Hi Peter, great honest review of a great looking loco, I have an old made in England black 5 in my collection, to my knowledge it’s never been run, I’ve never had an issue with Hornby steam locomotives just the HST 21 pin models, I’d like a W1 hush hush model with glowing fire box and smoke generator one day, I will wait until they’re available, thanks for sharing.

Cheers Stormy, would be good if they did a W1 with firebox flicker and perhaps working head lights. Slight pity I guess they didn't do it before, but oh well. Will be interesting to see if they do working removable lamps on other models

There are quite a few issues with this model, brake shoes are incorrect,bogie wheel profile is an issue, the thickness of the profile of the tender sides, lamps very over scale and the cylinder relief valves are very over scale. Hornby claim this is the ultimate Black Five it’s far from this, why is there a space between the running plate and the underside of the boiler. Large gap between engine and tender the footplate details are incorrect. Not sure why so many KZbin reviews are not highlighting these issues. There is a massive amount of detailed information that has been published about the Black Five yet Hornby still makes basic mistakes. Don’t mean to be negative but this is very very basic stuff.

The brass fitting on the front of the cylinder cover is a spring-loaded pressure relief (or release) valve. It allows any trapped water to be forced out, if necessary, whenever the cylinder cocks are shut. The rear covers should have them fitted also, but it already looks a bit too busy in this area on the model. I must say that the valve gear looks much better than is normally presented, but I don't particularly like all the other bright-work, as this is a BLACK five, but the level of detail is very, very good. Can't wait to see whether the B.R. version will be a lot more black, or even dirty, as many of us remember them from the 1960s.

Nope, no sprung drive wheels on this model, thankfully. I remember a spring for the rear drive wheel broke on the older black five (one of 2 I had) and that wrote it off

Can the marker lamps be fitted with different configurations?

Configurations, do you mean changing the headcodes? As I said in the video, the lamps are removable and you can change the headcodes. I also demonstrate how the lamps are removed

@class47peter thank you Peter. What I was trying to understand is where does the light source come for the lamps? If you swapped them around for example to an express code configuration will they still work or is it only the factory positions that illuminate?

@@vcs00railway84 Oh right, the light source is coming from a circuit board under the running plate I believe from looking closely at the model. Though as for all lamps working, on some of the BR ones they showed royal train head codes on decoration samples, so would assume they are all lit lamps

If you call that tender close coupled, please check out some Roco German steam locomotives with tenders. Then you see real close coupled tenders

Its as close as I think we're probably going to get. Can't be too close as otherwise they won't go round the tight radius on sone layouts. Not everyobe can have gentle curves

@@class47peter the roco engines can run on R2 with extreem close tender. They have a spring mechanism between the engine and tender

The gap is far to large it has been adjustable on some models I really do think Hornby has missed a massive opportunity to produce a good engine. But yet again inaccurate details and not to the standard that Hornby have produced in the past.

A very good review but... At the highly inflated price, why should you/we over-look the inaccuracies...or even have to..?? I shall Not be wasting My Money! Another expense...the working lamps...Hideous is the word that represents them. In this day and age Hornby have NO excuse whatsoever for producing over-size and out of scale Anything!!

I agree I won’t be parting with any of my hard earned pennies until they sort out the glaring inaccuracy of the wheels being too close together
