Last year Hornby released their brand new tooling of the LNER P2. Now a few months later the steam generator fitted versions have arrived which is something I was very interested in checking out.
Rather than conventional steam generators, this new style atomiser from Hornby only requires water to create the steam effect which syncs up with both sound from the HM7000 decoder and the rotation of the wheels.
While some may see this as a gimmick, others are calling it a gamechanger but either way it shows that Hornby are innovating and pushing the boundaries to bring even more features to our models.
The rest of the P2 model isn't exactly bad either, in fact it's very impressive. Prince Of Wales in particular is a new build P2 still under construction so perfect for my modern day steam operated heritage layout. I have locomotives with smoke generators, but the smoke oil is cloying. The advance of using distilled water in place of smoke oil is a welcome change in my mind.

It's definitely handy that you can just use water in this model rather than needed to buy a special oil. I know that ESU has some oil based generators though that are supposedly much cleaner - more news on those soon I suspect 😉 I think the technology in general has come a long way in the last few years. I don't have a layout, and only ever as a kid had the track out from a set on the floor in a loop, but I'd love to build one. Until seeing your running session on here with what is essentially just a loop of track and an engine shed, I thought loop layouts were boring. How wrong was I! You've added so many interesting features into this heritage line layout that from a track plan perspective is actually "quite simple" that I've definitely redefined my definitely definition of an interesting layout! It also means I don't feel so held back by my own limitations where I "can only have a loop" which has been an excuse not to build something until now. Great work! 😄

There's definitely a lot you can do with a single track loop if you put your mind to it. You might want to check out my Modular Model Railway series where I documented the build of this layout from start to finish. Essentially though, the station has a passing loop where two trains can pass each other. There's some sidings that lead off from Platform 2 as well which allow for some shunting while a passenger trains runs continuously round the circuit. And then yes, the engine shed and coal dock siding allows spare locos to be held out of the way until they are needed. Keeping everything in the right place can be quite a challenge but that's all part of the fun in my experience. Thanks for watching 😃

Nice review as usual. One thing you do really well is the pacing of your videos. They're concise, easy to understand and to the point. No waffling or dead time. Keep up the good work!😀 I have a few questions about Hornby's steam generators which I'm hoping you or one of your viewers might know the answer to: 1) Can you use tap water or do you need to buy distilled water to stop it furrng up over time? 2) Can the steam generator be damaged if it's run without water? e.g. If the water is used up. 3) I'm assuming you need to drain any excess water when the model isn't in use. How easy is that to do? Can you suck it out with the pipette? N.B. In order to stop the bogie derailing try adding some weight to the front of the loco to improved the balance. Barry davies did that on his P2 which apparently sorted it. If it doesn't, another trick is to add a small washer under the spring on the bogie to restrict the amount of movement which can help prevent it bouncing off over points, etc. P.S. A couple of things that might be nice to add to your reviews are: i) How easy it is to access the mechanism for routine maintenance? ii) The quality of the mechanism. To be fair Hornby's mechanisms are usually some of the best IMO, but Bachmann aren't always great and it would be nice to see how some of the smaller manufactures compare.

Thanks! I do try to keep them moving along while still explaining things clearly - it's not always easy though and I do sometimes worry I've rushed things. 1. Hornby says you can use tap water. That said I'm in a hard water area and I have distilled water on hand anyway for live steam engines so I've been using that because I doubt it'll make things worse. 2. I don't think so. From my understanding it's basically an atomiser so it'll remain active but just won't have any water to work on (a bit like a guitar amp will still work even if you don't have a guitar plugged in, in just won't make any noise). I think if it was going to damage it in some way Hornby would have to make you aware some way or build in a cut-off a bit like the live steam locos had. 3. Yeah you can suck it out with the pipette or turn the model upside down (guess who found that out by accident!). To be honest I haven't really needed to do this as I find a full tank lasts about 30 minutes so usually I run it until dry anyway. As for the front pony, the first thing to try is adjusting the springing which is a 30 second job. For me that solved the issue but I'll definitely look into adding some weight if it returns. As for showing more of the mechanism, I'm always wary about dismantling a loco during the initial review - especially when some of these videos have quick turnarounds. I know Sam'sTrains does it so I sort of figure if anyone wants that info they can usually check out one of his videos to see what the situation is as he has a fairly consistent way of doing things. Those use a heating element though which is sort of what this new style of smoke generator is trying to get away from. Additionally a big advantage of this system is that you can just use water rather than needed a special solution to make it work. Thanks for watching 😃

I have used vegetable glycerine (the product in a vape that makes clouds) in my hornby stowe model, it smokes well but leaves a lot of residue all over the model that is hard to clean off without using a cleaning agent that would probably end up damaging the paintwork over time, id honestly recommend disconnecting old smoke generators from yesteryear they are very messy and if not kept full can melt a locos body not to mention they need to be running nearly flat out to get any smoke from them

The idea is the same, but vapes use different oils, heating elements, and power supplies. They have a big built-in lithium-ion battery that can supply a lot of current. The forced airflow also helps. And it doesn't work constantly like in your loco. Well, at least for a few minutes, not even talking about 30 minutes on 5ml of oil, like Hornby smoke can. All in all I believe in this new technology. This is what we want. Mine P2 is in the post right now so I should see if I'm right in couple of days.

That is a nice model, as someone with breathing issues I’m not a fan of oil based smoke units. They smell odd and can cause issues in those with asthma/other respiratory issues (I have Cystic Fibrosis and am 9 years post double lung transplant). The use of water is a great way to offset those negative affects, even if it’s a non issue for most people.

Yes that's definitely a consideration! It's also better for the layouts too as the oil residue doesn't land all over the layout, instead the water vapour just stays in the air. Even if it's non-issue for most people air quality is still something I think we should all be thinking about in this hobby, especially with glue and paints being used frequently. a lovely video showing off the new generation P2's!, they really are great models. I think your hypothesis about the derailing being due to the loco being back heavy is spot on. I have both versions on 'Prince Of Wales' and the non-steam and sound one is far less fussy over point work etc. the non-steam and sound ones have a weight in the front instead of the hall sensor and steam generator and as such are not as back heavy. the steam and sound version is really great value too, especially if you run DCC but don't normally upgrade to sound. my personal choice for non-sound 21pin decoders is a zimo mn340, which on its own is £34. even if you look at more budget decoders, by the time you add on shipping your not far off the same price. so if your going for the model anyways you effectively get sound and steam for free! really looking forward to the black 5 after this, although on a much shorter loco I am slightly concerned about the weight sacrifice for the steam generator.

That's really interesting to hear about the two different versions - good know I wasn't entirely of the mark on that one then! I definitely agree about the price too - it can look high on first glance but actually when you see the different between the standard versions and the steam fitted ones, I'm actually amazed that Hornby have managed to make it for that price, considering what they've packed in. Yes I'm looking forward to the Black 5 too. I'm curious as to how that one will be filled up given that the front of the loco will supposedly have the removable LED headlamps too! Woah! That is such a cool engine with the stream and looks great pulling teak coaches. The steam adds so much realism to the layout making it feel more alive. After seeing this I might add a system like trs trains' water vapour system to my hornby terrier( Brighton) Very cool P2!

I love the new P2s. These are actually capable of much slower speeds. Both my example and the two examples reviewed by Sam's Trains were capable of moving so slow that they appear from a distance to not be moving at all.

Yeah I don't like doing a full strip down on brand new models generally just so I can show how it performs untampered out of the box. I know there are other channels that do though. Generally I agree though, I think the HM7000 system is a brilliant way for newcomers to get into DCC and the new steam generator is an added bonus on top. Great all round in my opinion. Great review. I’m still unsure of water being sprayed over the layout though. I had the same issue with the pony/front driver derailing on the standard Prince of Wales. Researched the fix; turns out slightly loosening the front screws of the base keeper plate solves the issue for good.

In my experience the water doesn't really land on the layout at all. Because it's vapour it tends to go into the air more and just become part of the humidity of the room. If any does land on the layout, it's just a small amount that it doesn't really make a difference - certainly less so than oil based units. That's interesting with the keeper plate. My issues seem to have disappeared now but if they resurface I'll give that one a try. Thanks for watching 😃

Love your layout and great photography. Just got hold of my P2 last week. It's fabulous. The steam generator is no gimmick, a real step forward, the sound impressive.. The front pony also derails and has forced me to fine tune several bits of track but still a few issues. Must be because of less weight in that area. A heads up: the power consumption is huge. My NCE Power Cab just barely runs it, especially when trying to simultaneously run my two 9F's with bluetooth decoders. So instead I use a 4 amp Hornby PSU and an Apple iPad which solves the problem nicely. I switch back to the Power Cab when using my 8 pin decoders without bluetooth. A slight nuisance but there you go. Tends to grind a bit on my 18" radius curves. To be expected I guess with 8 driving wheels. Despite the issues a great model.

That's interesting that it's drawing so much power - I can't say I've thought to look with mine but next time I have it running I'll check it out. I can’t get away from how much the loco waggles when running. When you had the camera pointing at the wheels at least one of them was clearly eccentric. Also, the coupling rods didn’t remain straight while it was running. Is the tender coupling adjustable? I’m fortunate to have space for gradual curves and I close the gap up to a prototypical spacing - I’m not convinced these new connectors are an improvement in this regard. I’d definitely go for the steam generator though.

The loco only waggles on the rolling road - in the 5 years I've been making these videos I've only ever had one loco that didn't move about in that fashion. Meanwhile on the layout it looks fairly stable to me. The wheels have a certain amount of spring and movement to them to allow for the long wheelbase, which is why it's appearing as eccentric. Again when it's running on the layout you can see it's fine. The coupling rods have a similar amount of play to them too for the same reason. As for the tender connection, I don't think it can be adjusted but the gap is smaller than previous Hornby locos due to the fact that the connection is sprung allowing it to open up on tight curves. This seems to be the way the industry is going as both Dapol and Bachmann (among others) have already implemented this style of connection on their tender locos too. Thanks for watching 😃

Whilst it is not 100% realistic - how could it be without burning coal (!) - surely it is better to have a steam loco with ..um..err, 'steam' than no steam at all? To me it looks much better than the oil-based steam generator (which has ruined many a loco in my experience!) and the sync with the cylinder action looks great imho. I can't wait to get one - when I've saved up!

@@stevecaunt7191 I suppose because it's seen as surplus to what the wider hobby usually requires. Most locos aren't sound fitted or steam generators or working fans. I'm not against any of these features but I do recognise that for most people, myself included, probably only one or two locos might have them included. Thinking about firebox LEDs, those were originally seen as a gimmick but are now included on most new models. Perhaps if we get to a point where every steam loco is sound fitted with a steam generator in the same way it'll become more commonplace - but I think we're a way off that yet.

Another great review. I'm still waiting for my pre-order to arrive. (Slow postage to Australia, and I paid for express!!) Anyway, this I feel is a real gamechanger to the hobby. This new variant of smoke unit has some advantages. - Don't have to worry about a heating element needing to warm up or damage your plastics bodies, so you can technically run it dry. - Is safe for those who have breathing issues. - Save costs on buying smoke oils. and WAY more easier to obtain. - an actual puffing effect without the complex need of a fan or other component to simulate the effect that can fail over time. Now the downside - The Smoke probably doesn't linger as long as oil base one. - The need to buy 100% purified water (But a 2+ litre bottle is going to last a long time, and still cheaper than smoke oil.) - You can't use scents to enhance the experience. (As far as I know), so no coal smell. - Water I guess is not as safe as smoke oils when it comes to accidental spills on delicate electronics... so I'll be interested about side effects like rust and such. There's probably more pros and cons, but these are the ones I can think off the top of my head.

It's definitely a great feature to have for those that want it. Hornby have said you can run this with tap water - although I'm still choosing to use distilled as I have it in store for my live steam locos. As for rust and electronics, the steam generator is right at the front pretty well isolated from the rest of the motor and circuitry. Not saying it couldn't happen but I think you'd have to try pretty hard. I would imagine Hornby would have thought about this while designing the generator. Thanks for watching 😃

​@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I've actually install these types of units into some G-scale locos for experimentation. Despite having roughly a 6ml capacity. Mine only last for about 7 mins before refill. (Not sure how Hornby makes their's last for 30mins) For my testing units, I have used Tap water, with so far no effects so far. But when I get this Hornby model I will be using the Distilled water only.

Update from my last post. So Hornby have apparently "Cancelled" my order, even though I paid back in February. They didn't tell my hobby shop about the "cancellation" until today when I rang them to find out what was going on. They've also apparently discontinued this model for international orders, due to some kind of faults. But I've not seen any bad reviews of this locomotive so far. Now I'm on a waiting list for the variant R30350SS that is due for Autumn release. So they/Hornby still have my money. Overall, I'm not happy that I waited 2 years to order one. And now have to wait another 6 months again. My Complaints is in no Direction to "That Model Railway Guy" I'm just warning people about the possible disappointment if they also ordered one of these lovely locomotives TMRG, You are really lucky to get one of these when you can. @@exveefan Something doesn't quite add up here... you say Hornby still have your money but you ordered it from a hobby shop. It's the shop who has your money and not Hornby so why don't they give you your refund? Similarly when ordering with Hornby direct they don't take the money until the model arrives - that's pretty standard for all UK retailers too although I don't know how it's done overseas. I know in the past that some retailers haven't been given the amount of stock they've asked for but usually they're aware of that shortage beforehand. And I've not heard any other reports of this model not being shipped overseas either... I'd have thought if that were the case it would have been mentioned on the various forums out there. I don't want to throw your hobby shop under the bus but to me it feels like someone hasn't told you the entire truth.

My hobby shop owner was also annoyed by this news. I heavily thought about a refund, but I still want to get one of these Water based Smoke unit locos, so they are pushing me to get the R30350SS instead since it's the same loco and somehow more easier on the supplier to do than just give me back my money for now. So I don't really have much choice other than to wait even longer. Anyway, I'm just frustrated.

Great video. 👍 I have the same derailing issue with the front pony which is ultra loose. How did you tighten the spring?

Hiya, there's screw holding the front pony on. Loosen that and take the whole pony off and you should see two metal tabs that are point slightly upwards. Bend those further upwards to increase the pressure pushing the front pony down into the rails. Be careful when reassembling the front pony not to bend or twist those tabs. Also if you have a steam fitted version, make sure it's empty first otherwise you'll spill water everywhere when you turn it upside down to release the screw... guess how I found that out! Great video! It actually convinced me to buy one of these locos and I just got it today, I do have a question, did your locos steam generator intermittently stop producing steam then start again a few seconds later? Mine seems to be doing that, though I haven’t fully run it in as of typing.

Awesome, hope you're enjoying it! When that's happened with mine it's usually because there's a drop of water sitting on the atomiser. Once it clears the steam effect comes back. Make sure you're using the open chimney rather than the double one to minimise the droplets and just keep an eye on it - if it ever builds up too much I just use the pipette to suck it up but I've only ever had to do that once or twice. It's interesting to see that smoke isn't super popular with UK models. Almost everything that comes out here in the US has smoke standard. I will say the distilled water vapor looks 10x better than the wispy effect of traditional oils.

There's two big factors to that really, the first being that everyone always moans about the price of new models so manufacturers tend to focus more on improving the general look/performance of models rather than trying out news things like this. Second, there's still quite a large portion of people who only run DC analog who have no interest in things like sound and steam. That's starting to change though. A few years ago it felt like hardly anyone had DCC sound whereas now it's a lot more accessible. Thanks for watching 😃

This is a fantastic model! While it is a little out of my price range, I can totally see why it is so pricey, and for the most part, it does indeed look like you get what you pay for! On the crawl, I think lowering he CVS would help, as remembering back to Sam’sTrains review on the DC model, this is one of the most impressive crawlers I’ve ever seen, which is particularly impressive given that this is an express engine, and this model still has a good maximum speed as well! The TXS decoder is great as well, and the smoke is far better than the traditional ones with the smoke fluid, not to mention how much cleaner it is! Overall this gets a huge thumbs up from me, and I’m going to have a very hard time convincing myself not to get the P2, Flying Scotsman and Black Five with the smoke units! Thanks for another great review 😃 (although I should really be annoyed with you for making me want to blow almost £1000 on these new steam fitted Hornby locos, just kidding 🤣🤣). A very nice model, I only have the DCC ready version though I believe it is still fitted with the synchronising wheel ready for the steam generator. As for the derailing, yes this did happen to me as well they can be a bit temperamental in that respect.

Yes the sensor is there on the wheel but I don't think it's possible to retro-fit the steam generator into a P2 where it wasn't fitted from the factory... and as far as I know Hornby don't have any plans to release the unit separately either. It is a long, rigid loco so I can kind of understand the derailing in someways, I was just surprised that the P2 was so sensitive to any tiny bump in the track where other locos just sailed through. Great review! Love this idea from Hornby, brings us closer to our American cousins in terms of 'play value'. Yes, it's gimmicky, but it is still a great feature. Also, FYI, the tender on Prince of Wales matches the tender on Tornado, which has a larger water capacity for mainline excursion running. So it's an accurate detail variation compared to the other P2s.

Yes certainly with the H0 market (both in America and the European continent) models tend to be much more expensive but with a lot more features like this. Yea its not an etched plate as mentioned in my review, Hornby tend to just have a brass plate and then tampo printed in black. The A4/A3 are quite old tooling now unfortunately they never retooled the bogies for these to include NEM pockets. The item you call a steam pump, is I believe a Turbo generator assembly. Its a gimmick but adds another dimension to the model, its a feature which makes it seem more real... Excellent review as always.

That's definitely interesting about the NEM pockets on the A4/A3 pony trucks. I've got one of the newer Dublo A4s and that does have a removable section on the front that can be replaced for a coupling so maybe we might see that come across to the standard range of A4/A3s in the future too. Around 110cm long. Basically I knew I wanted to run 3 coach trains so I made them long enough to fit 3 coaches plus a decent sized loco. I've cheated slightly with platform 2 as it curves with the loop to get a bit of extra length. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks for the informative video. I have just bought the P2 (with sound and steam) and I am looking forward to trying it out. I did try a brief test, with minimal water, and failed to get any steam but I assume that might be because I did not fill the tank up quite enough. I was also wondering if there is a sure fire way of making sure the loco has no moisture in it before packing it away. Anyway I look forward to experimenting 🙂 Thanks again, Andrew.

I wouldn't panic if it hasn't produced any steam yet as it takes a little time for the wick to soak up the water. If you didn't completely fill it up then that's most likely what has happened. If you need to pack it away again you can just suck the water out of the reservoir using the pipette. The wick will still be damp but not enough to cause any spillage. Great review and video :) I like the steam generator idea, we have seen them in the past so it is good see a new generation. Whether I would buy one though, I don't know. I don't like the Hornby decoders or sound, so I would need to change the chip. Would that stop the generator from working, I don't know. There are only 4 (as far as I am aware) connection between the loco and tender (2 for power and 2 for the motor), so I am not sure how info between the chip and generator are done. The main question is: Do you prefer the Steam Generator or Live Steam? I know my answer :) Great as always :)

I think currently it probably only works with the Hornby HM7000 decoders as the sound profile is most likely working in tandem with the steam generator and hall sensor. But give it a while, I imagine one of the DCC Sound companies will figure out a way to reverse engineer it and get it working with their Zimo or ESU decoders too. It's hard to choose but the Steam Generator does have some advantages over Live Steam. It's easy to use, you can run it with your other locos... but you don't get the novelty that you do with Live Steam. Thanks for watching 😃

The springing on the front pony is very weak from the factory - takes all of 30 seconds to unscrew it and push the little copper tabs up though which makes a world of difference. But yeah, as a long loco with a rigid wheelbase it's going to be more prone to derailments on our train set style curves and points. I guess I was just surprised at how sensitive it was in comparison to other Hornby models - thinking the 9F, A3/A4s and the W1 Hush Hush here. Thanks for watching 😃

I'm surprised it took Hornby this long to add smoke. It's been a standard feature in American O gauge trains for decades and is somewhat common on HO gauge American trains as well, of course those use glycol and a heating element for their smoke so the fluid is a bit messy and the generator can melt plastic parts. This water vapor steam system likely won't be melting anything, although I'd be worried about water causing parts to corrode or short.

Hornby have done smoke fitted models in the past using the oil based method but this water vapour technique is definitely a step up from that given how it can sync up with the sound and wheel rotation. The amount of water actually emitted is very little so I'd be surprised if it caused anything to erode... maybe if you were running it 24/7 with the steam on. Thanks for watching 😃

I know it's been said several times before, but it seems Hornby MAY have turned a corner. Hornby at its best is hard to beat. This loco looks great and performs very well. Your review was superior infortainment. I have an original "Railways" (not the Railroad) version. As you say, this re-tooled model is a far better loco. This is honestly the first fair price I've seen from hornby in a couple years. But I really wonder what the benefit of using a glorified humidifier is over just a normal smoke fluid? Especially because smoke fluid usually doesn't sink as much or as fast as the mist. Maybe it's getting rid of the heating element? I also wonder if the water buildup could do any damage to scenery items, any moreso than the smoke fluid. It also bothers me a bit how obvious the audio cuts are in the sounds. The repeating chuffing noises are a bit grating. A good loco overall but I don't think this would be for me!

The benefit is that you can use water rather than needing special smoke oil fluid. The water is definitely cleaner than oil in my experience too, it leaves barely any residue - I imagine most of it just stays in the air as the particles are so small. As for the sound, you get what you pay for and that's why the Hornby TXS decoders are cheaper in comparison to Zimo or ESU. That said, when the real P2 is finally running they may well redo the recording with the actual loco which everyone could update to via the app. Thanks for watching 🤩

Even if its a gimmick, I dont know why anyone would dislike it, its such a cool Gimmick! Ive been excitedly waiting for these models to drop since they were first announced. That said im really not a fan of that plastic part of the valve gear. Watching the valve gear is one of my favourite parts of the models so that bit just ruins it for me. I do however have one question, does the HM7000 decoder work with normal controllers? (Or cheap ones like my Hornby Select) Or is it its own system? Id hate to have to change all of my existing setup to the HM system if its not cross compatible.

I can certainly see why some wouldn't like it, in the same way that sound or DCC isn't for everyone either. I think that valve gear piece would be to complicated to make working, so it would be static regardless of the material it was made out of. I just felt that, were it metal like the rest of the linkage, it would stand out less and you wouldn't notice it was static. The way it is at the moment it looks a little cheap for an otherwise premium model. Thanks for watching 😃

@@speleokeir @_Zekken Sorry I somehow managed to miss the bit about decoder compatibility - long day, lots of comments! HM7000 decoders should work fine with all DCC Controllers and of course as a stand alone system using the Hornby transformer and bluetooth control. The problem arises when you try to run an HM7000 decoder on DC analog control - which I don't recommend for DCC fitted locos anyway. But in the case of these decoders THAT's when they're most like to go pop! But I've been running all my HM7000 decoders on standard DCC and it's absolutely fine. Hope that helps 👍

This is like one of those highly detailed models you see somebody do for an exhibition as a “ look what I have done” piece. It an interesting eye catching thing to see and a show off piece for a layout, but I don’t think the average modeller would use the steam function more than a few times. As a matter of interest how big is the whole steam gen unit? When I think about the smoke box flicker that I have on a couple of locos, it got used once to see it works then never used again, this would probably be the same. At least with this you won’t have the oily residue of the old smoke system.

I think it depends on how you plan on using the loco. If you're only going to use it once then you're probably just better off getting the standard version. for me though, everytime I've run this loco so far I've had the steam generator on. Same with the firebox led and similar functions on other locos too - I make use of them where appropriate and I imagine there are other modellers that do too. The generator isn't massive, it basically sits in the smokebox and over the first set of driving wheels - that includes the reservoir for the water too. Thanks for watching 😃

I experienced the same derailing issue with this model. None of my other models experience the same issue. Sadly, after just a couple of weeks of use, the loco stopped working in reverse and I decided to return it to the retailer for a refund.

Find it a little unusual that only now smoke is becoming a big thing in the UK, as here in the states smoking locos have been around for a long time. In my own sphere with 3 rail O, pretty well a given that most steamers have a smoke unit, even if it's a more basic puffer style. Absolute kings are MTH, their fan driven ones can run you out of the room, and paired with coal-scented smoke fluid it both looks and smells the part.

We have had smoke for a while - I've got a small tank engine from the 60s which has a rudimentary smoke unit in it. I remember when I was a kid Hornby had a few locos in their catalogue which had smoke units and people have been fitting after market generators into their locos for years - I even did it myself in a video a while back. I suspect that people here weren't keen on needing to use oil so now that it's based around water, and syncs up to the sound and wheel rotation it's a lot more attractive which is why it's suddenly gaining more attention. I can remember similar ones over here when I was a kiddo, usually just threw some light oil in them and they were pretty smelly. Things have certainly come a long way since then! Syncronized puffs with the wheels and sounds, even special effects like whistle steam, working cylinder drains that work in time with the motion, water scoop wash, and blowdown valves. Can be completely scentless too if you use non-scented fluid. Kinda wonder about water-based units, as in my experience with live steam models you don't get any vapor from the stack at all if the ambient temperature is too hot, and in certain lighting conditions the vapor can be hard to see.

Gimmick or not the steam generator is great. By the way Hornby in Triang/Hornby days had synchrosmoke which was designed to match the motion. Certainly not a digital option back then of course. As to price ? About par for the course for what I’m used to paying for European N gauge sound fitted locos. Not cheap but then how much would it cost to have a sound decoder and steam generator professionally retrofitted to an analog loco ?? 🤔

As for price - well it would be at lest £100 to add a sound decoder and then you'd need to find someone who could do the steam too. Yes you're right, some people do see such things as a gimmick. It's the same with the ability to give inertia to a model, it's seen as a gimmick. To me the whole point of modelling is to actually model the real thing i.e. to make it as realistic as possible, that is the whole point. For a model I don't see why inertia is even an option, it should be required by the very fact that it is a model. I mean, what is the point in having a model that moves like a toy? I don't see why ALL models have not had big flywheels, bigger than motor, right from the start. Just as it's appearance is expected to model that of the real thing, so should its movement. It shouldn't be an option, just like it's not an option with its appearance. Steam is of course more difficult to model, but to see any attempt to model it as a gimmick rather than a necessity I find extraordinary. Have a Google for TRS Trains.

I think it's about being respectful of how each individual wants to enjoy their personal hobby. In the same way that it's frustrating when some people complain this is gimmick and shouldn't be made, those of us who do like this feature should be mindful that it's not for everyone and isn't compulsory. It goes both ways. You can say that for any feature, inertia, flywheels, etc to be honest - different things matter to different people and we're all entitled to enjoy our hobbies as we see fit. Having got this last week, I can no longer run a steam train without this effect, it just looks wrong if they dont smoke and so am going to have all my trains converted to a steam effect by TRS trains who install a similar system, its expensive but I have to do it, TRS is actually better as you get steam from the cylinders as well. But my flying Scotsman conversion he is working on now will make it more expensive than my car.

£300 is a fine price for a DCC sound loco, the problem is the standard ones costing £252 for a non-sound, non-dcc loco!

All my 2-rail DC is currently stored awaiting my retirement in a couple of years time. I doubt I’ll ever be able to afford DCC, but that won’t stop me enjoying the hobby.

Yes, the steam effect only works with the sound on so you can either turn the sound off completely or there is a function to turn the steam off while the sound is on too. The only thing you can't do (to my knowledge) is have the sound off and the steam on. Thanks for watching 😃

The TXS sounds decoders are the next iteration of the TTS decoders so naturally they're going to sound similar. There's a reason they cost significantly less than sound decoders from Zimo or ESU. Thanks for watching 😃

A newcomer here. Can someone tell me why the valve gear? on the "Prince of wales" is plastic, but on the "Earl Marischal" seems to be metal. Are they the same basic model? I could and probably am getting it all wrong, but I can't find an answer. Be kind, please!

Hi there, so essentially the P2's had lots of variations between them with no two locos being entirely the same. As a result the valve gear is different on different locomotives: Earl Marischal had Walschaerts valve gear while the new build Prince Of Wales will have the Lentz poppet valve gear that was a feature of the original Cock Of The North. Basically two different designs of valve gear that look very different. For the models I'm guessing that Hornby are able to replicate the Walschaerts valve gear in metal but for whatever reason not the poppet version for Prince Of Wales. Bear in mind as well that this isn't the only difference between the two models - especially as Prince Of Wales has used modern technology to refine and improve the design, which I believe Hornby have incorporated in their model too. Is it just me, but when on the rolling road, those con rods didn't look straight. Almost as if they're out of line, especially between driving axles 2 & 4. It looks like they are pivoting at the connecting bolt on axle 3..

The driving wheels have some side to side play to allow the loco to navigate the tight train set curves we have on our layouts. The con rods have some slop to allow for this movement but as you can see it doesn't effect the running of the loco. Thanks for watching 😃

Honestly if you're on a limited budget then you're unlikely to be looking at the latest, most fancy, new release with all the bells and whistles. There are plenty of other models out there that are more wallet friendly. But at the end of the day, you have to accept that if you want all the extra features then you have to pay for that. Gutted as I bought the "new" POW last year and probably paid around £230 for it without the sound and smoke generator. I wonder if Hornby will offer the parts to fit yourself for the difference ? 🤔

I doubt it as from what Hornby have said it's not just as simple as plugging in the generator, there's a lot of other stuff that goes into it that would make retrofitting it very tricky. They did announce these steam versions back in 2022 though so they've been known about for a while. There's also a Black 5 and a Flying Scotsman both with steam coming later this year too if either of those take your fancy. Thanks for watching 😃

I've got a few Hornby locos with this connection now and haven't had any problems. I've also had models from other manufacturers that use the same style of connection for much longer and none of those have had any issues either. Obviously it's not designed for repeated use but generally it seems much more convenient than the previous system. Thanks for watching 👍

In the UK at least, real sized locomotives are referred to as steam engines not smoke engines because they create steam. If you have smoke coming out of the chimney instead of steam then either you have a problem or you need to have a word with your Fireman! Thanks for watching 😃

Am I the only one who thinks the smoke looks wrong? It’s filled with condensed water droplets which look ridiculous at this scale and the steam drops way too easily, as if it’s not really being forced out very hard. Plus, it looks like pure water (obviously) which is certainly not what was coming out of the stack IRL. I actually think the more modern oil generators look more realistic.

It's down to personal preference but I think most people are pretty impressed by it. The water droplets are only really visible when I was shining a backlight on it for the camera - when running on the layout it basically looks like steam. Some people may prefer the oil based units but I think for a lot of people the difference is probably negligible and the advantage of being able to use water is a lot more convenient. It's not acentric (or non-conentric), it's just because it's on the rolling road. You see this with a lot of models. When it's running on the layout you can see the wheels are absolutely fine. Thanks for watching 👍
