We were obsessed with Obsession! This song came out of nowhere and despite the silliiness of the video-- it represented the cheesiest of Hollywood as though the singers were aspiring actors - - we were thrilled anyway because fortunately this was made during the height of MTV and all we cared about was a visual to go with the song. It was a huge hit and has become a cult classic representing the 80s

I always thought of this as a song that transcended its genre. Yes, it's a great example of new wave synthpop, but you could re-record this as a rock song, disco song, punk song, whatever, and it would still be a great tune. It's just a fantastic melody and set of hooks. The album version of this song is about a minute longer and has a blistering guitar solo.

There was so much variety of club-friendly music in the 80s [synth-techno (like this song), post-punk industrial (Front 242 and the like), danceable rock & roll (like INXS, Simple Minds, etc), pop (Madonna, etc), and the synth-fused 80's incarnation of R&B ('new' Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, etc). Gen Xer music! lol. New wave/post-punk, some say "watered down" punk rock music you can dance to with futuristic sounding synthesizers, heavy bass guitars, catchy drum beats, etc. Lex and Brad got the vibe of new wave and meaning of the song right. Lot of new wave/post-punk songs are like this. We didn't really noticed, just something to danced and groove to it. lol. Kind of nonchalant. We were kids (me) , teens or young adults when this song was huge (mid '80s). Other songs/videos from this group yall will are "I Engineer", "Let Him Go", "Room to Move". Other groups like them were Human League (yall have reacted to "Don't You Want Me?" already while back), Thompson Twins, ABC, Ace of Base, Berlin (not their poppy slow soft rock Top Gun song, though). Biggest thing I've noticed about how music has changed since the 80's is very few people actually dance to it anymore .....sure,some do a kind of gymnastics with aerial moves and stuff, but it's not party dancing. Try walking into a club or party at someones' house with this playing and not feeling the groove and starting to move to it. People listen to music now. We enjoyed it by feeling and dancing.

@@shannonbennett987 I remember how shocking it was to hear "Erotic City" by Prince on the radio, because clearly he was saying *that word*. I was like, "Wow, so I guess anything goes nowadays." Of course the word on the lyric sheet was "funk", but come on! WE KNEW.

During the heyday of the music video age, there were some original, entertaining, and obscenely expensive productions. and then there were a number of them that made you go, huh? yeah, this one falls under the latter. But hey, when working with a limited budget, some videos looked like college projects.

Right? There don't seem to be many duets or mixed-gender bands on the radio anymore.

This song is about a stalker who seems to get more obsessed as the song progresses. At first, it appears he has a serious crush on the girl, but he later becomes more dangerous and intent on "capturing" her.
