Classic Bike Guide: Almost unique - Velocette Thruxton Metisse

Anything with a Metisse frame is pretty much guaranteed to stop any classic enthusiast at least for a few moments inspection but when, or perhaps that should be if, you come across a Velocette engined Metisse, then take time out to have an even closer look than usual because it will be one of just six such genuine roadsters ever built. Whats more, it might be even rarer than that. Nigel C found one such treasure.

Lovely bike, I do like the Metisse, I raced a 350cc Aermacchi Metisse for a number of years, probably the best handling bike I ever rode.

A friend of mine had two rare Velos in Australia, a Matisse and an Indian Velo. I have no idea what happened to him or them but they were both pretty unique and romantic machines.

I wish someone would make the Velo again, a la India's Enfield Bullet factory. Speaking of the Indian Velo, I recall from a very distant past a Velo done in candy apple pinkish-red by Indian (or maybe a one-off job). You might think the color offputting, but it was gorgeous. The Indian Bullet is too slow (75 mph top speed?!) and really rather expensive for what you're getting. The Velocette would be choice.

What about a Vincent-Metisse? Ever done? I passed up a chance to build a Nor-Vin while working at Lovengreen's Cycle Salvage.. Tampa's NW side.... 1969-1970.... A nice Rapide engine in a crate.. And several Domiracer racer rollers to choose from ALL from Daytona AMA 200's... Rickman HAD to think about doing one.. We had a Ducati engined Rickman around the bay area... Raced at our Dade City AMA Sportsman races... We had a nice 250 Diana... From the same source... Memories! J.C.

re comments from mgkpvpjff below: He [?] is quite WRONG in saying all Velo's should be black.. the factory produced them in Cream, Green, Red and Thruxtons in Silver Blue.. Black is HIS preferred choice. What is wrong is the film quality.. given that it supports a magazine article.. the quality is VILE.. WF
