Thank you very much for a great review. So you liked her?? Just a couple of points, all our yachts are bespoke for their owners. The owner of this boat is a very experienced sailor who has been sailing for around 60 years. He intends to do the Atlantic again in a few years and she was specced by him. Our usual engine is a Nanni which gives a little more room in the saloon, and there is usually a top access built it to access the diptstick. On this boat the owner wanted a Yanmar, with twin 160ah alternators (instead of a generator) so we were happy to fit that, so there is a side access panel wher ethe dipstick is. Likewise, the interior layout can be customised. The original layout has twin heads, one forward and one aft, this owner wanted the single heads and we're very pleased with how it works. You mentioned about the lack of a bathing platform. We have a fold-down platform on our R53, but for the R36, R37 ,R42 and R44 we usually fit gates in the guardrails that fold down to make a decent set of steps. An owner can have a rear-mounted ladder too, it's their choice, but in our experience many owners prefer the midships ladder because being in the centre of the boat there is less pitching movement when trying to board from the dinghy in rough weather also owners have a long space on deck to pile the contents of the dinghy onto; without having to board the boat and move bags around. This proves very handy if, like many of our owners do, you're sailing single handed. Thank you once again for a wonderful review, if you're ever in Falmouth, please look us up, we'd love to take you sailing or show you around our factory.

As an ex Rustler 42 owner, I enjoyed the video and agree totally with comments in it. There is so much more than appeared in the video, e.g. the massive but hidden storage; the safety of the small cockpit and the encapsulated keel; the small spaces down below and in the cockpit make it safe to sail in heavy weather as does the cutter rig (worst weather was off Cape Finistere in Force11). Down side is the small cockpit, not suitable for marina parties; long fin keel, really is best with a bow thruster; cost of maintenance as you would expect; teak deck is great for safety but needs maintenance+++. A Rustler 42 can be sailed single handed, but better 2 up. We also partook in local and long distance regattas where expecially in 50kts winds she out ran bigger but lighter racing cruisers. We sailed in both northern latitudes and in the height of summer in the Med. but neither the cold (central heating) nor the 40+temps (3x 12v fans) were a problem. If I were fit enough I would buy another one in a flash!

Thank you for those kind words, Peter. Yes, our cockpits are cosy, especially when compared to modern coastal cruising yachts, but we decided to make them safer for those sailing offshore. Every boat is a compromise in one way or another.

I have had the pleasure of sailing aboard a Rustler 42 many many times. St Barbara V (flagship of the Royal Artillery Yacht Club) has sailed the globe introducing our soldiers to the wonderful adventure that is offshore sailing for many years now. I remember when she was purchased and many thought that she was too flashy. Well built, well maintained and she is as good today as she was in the mid 1990s. My final fling in uniform was to be the first mate on board returning her from the Canaries back to Gosport having done a winter season in the Canaries to ensure that we could continue to offer sailing opportunities all year round. Superb review of a superb yacht.

@@stephenmeyer3284 I had my boat for over 20 years.. never an issue with the saildrive.. worked well. The biggest issue was the engine was further back in the stern. In the bow I had a 14 gallon water tank. I stopped using it to reduce hobbyhorsing in a sea because so much weight in a boat with only 8350 disp was concentrated in the bow & stern. If the engine had been forward (typical with a shaft drive). The weight would have been more centered in the boat. But, from a usability point of view.. never an issue with the saildrive connected to the 2GM Yanmar

The biggest complaint from those that don’t like the boat seems to be that it’s not a Eurocaravanboat for the med but surely that’s the the point ? It’s meant to be a long distance sailboat, not for motoring round the med from marina to marina . Aren’t there more than enough designs with acres of open space ikea interiors and 7’ 6” headroom that already fulfil that brief ? I hear people say on KZbin and in magazines that you can circumnavigate in more or less anything, and that’s probably true but would you want to ? Just looking at the form of a Rustler is a joy to the eye . I for one will never be able to afford one but hope enough people that can ensure that Rustler continue to build beautiful sailboats .

Thank you for the tour Nick, that is one hell of a lot of boat for $1M USD! I loved the limited teak on the exterior myself, while I love the LOOK the upkeep can be a PITA. GREAT engine access, as long as that particular cupboard is empty anyway. The weak point really seems to be fresh air into the saloon/cabin areas and I can see a few things I'd like to add for a long distance cruiser.

Love your reviews. The best out there. As for the Rusler. Ventilation seems weak. Also, engine access. Do you really need to move that furniture to check the oil? With the drawers full, I'd guess you just hope the oil is fine. Also, looks like you also better hope the raw water impeller never needs replacing, though access looked so bad I'm guessing the side panels come off too. I've been on several and I love the design, execution is second to done and even though having been built for twenty years, design seems older than that.
@Rustler-Yachts
@Rustler-Yachts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, Ventilation we have dorades on deck, hatches and if an owner wants more we can add it. We're flexible and we build boats to our owners' needs. You mention dipsick access which is a good point! We usually fit a Nanni diesel as standard, this has a dipstick forward, on the top, so we usually fit an inspection hatch just above it; lift the cushion, lift the hatch and there it is. On this boat, however, the owner wanted a common-rail Yanmar engine, with twin 160ah alternators (instead of a generator) so we were happy to fit that. Yanmar Engines have their dipstick on the starboard of the engine, so there is an access panel on the side of the engine box to give quick and easy access - easier than the Nanni in some respects. Two push-button latches and it opens.

Quite the rave review. TY Nike. I am impressed by your intensity of Love the Boat! In many ways, that is the best recommendation for the boat. It does show your appreciation for what works. One of the things I picked up is that the quality of workmanship means a lot in a boat to the owner. I think the way to say it is this. You pay for it once. You enjoy it as long as you use it. And if you are sailing around the world. You are in the boat a lot. Thus your use pleasure will be high. As far as I am concerned the rolling of a monohull is not acceptable any longer. I love the sideways stability of the catamaran design.

I like a trawler style main deck with a large cockpit a large sorange salon in front of the cockpit and is the cockpit and a forward shifted from center line terline helm position with reverse sloping windows. "Golden oak" interior - NO thanks! That is straight out of the 80's! That may be an owner choice, but I can't imagine doing an oak interior in that color of finish 19 years ago, much less 2022. UGH. SO many better wood and finish options. It's very pretty with a proper sheer and a proportional coach roof and ports. Seems like if you wanted a design from the 80's, you could save a lot of money by buying used. As you pointed, out the lack of space aft for the sake of a certain look doesn't seem like a very good compromise these days. Excellent job as always and I love your attention to detail!
@Rustler-Yachts
@Rustler-Yachts 2 жыл бұрын
We can work with whatever interior wood an owner chooses, that was crown-cut European oak and was the owner's choice. This owner has spent a lot on personalising his boat; more than many others. Carbon rig , Y-boom, state of the art charging and power management system that was developed with Yanmar, Mastervolt and us, she has a completely custom layout and is equipped for transatlantic cruising. This has increased her price considerably. As for lack of aft space, we prefer a seaworthy hull shapes that maintains an equal waterline shape as she heals. We don't require twin rudders and wave slap won't keep you up all night. Of course the pay off is less volume in the aft quarters, but you get a more better behaved more comfortable sailing yacht because of it.

I give you a million fiat dollars and you give me that boat!? I could not sleep at night when considering my good fortune. I also could not sleep due to the heat/humidity as a result of poor ventilation. That said, I’ll take it! And thanks for the QUALITY of your review.

Nick, I also looked over the Rustler at the boat show along with the Moody and HR. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the build. Every bit of woodwork was perfection. However I thought the cockpit was cramped and didn’t like the traveler in the middle of it. Down below whilst traditional was a bit dark. They do build a deck salon model which I would love to look around. Currently own a Southerly 42 rst, would I swap? No, but I would love to have the joinery and finishes that Rustler provide.

Thanks Tony. Just to address your concerns. We keep the cockpits on the snug side to make them safer offshore; you're never far from a handhold or somewhere to brace and, if you were unfortunate to slip or fall, you cannot fall a great distance. As for the mainsheet. The cockpit has proved the most popular position over the 20+ years we've been building the R42 but it's not the only option. We are currently building an R42 with the mainsheet on the coachroof, clear of the cockpit - her owners want to cruise the Pacific and needs a bimini. You are also correct in that we build a raised saloon yacht, the R44.

Beautiful yacht. I do have one question, and this may be in the weeds but, are the water tanks molded into the side of the hull? My experience with my current boat is that using the inside of the hull itself as part of the tank aggravates a hull’s tendency to blister.
@Rustler-Yachts

Sorry, we've only just see this. In a word no, we use internal tanks that are separate, but secured to the hull.

In the promotion of a blue water sailboat, the interior should not turn into a promotion of kettles, capsule coffee machines and carpentry. The interior volume, storage areas and functional features need to be honestly displayed.

hi Nick what was the black steel bar above the engine? was it part of the lever that you pulled?
@Rustler-Yachts
@Rustler-Yachts 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pippa, Well spotted! The black steel structure over the engine serves a couple of purposes. It's not a bar as such, it's a box beam, and its primary function is as ducting to remove hot air coming from the twin alternators at the front of the engine, while allowing cooler air to enter. But, rather than just fit ducting, we did it our Rustler way and turned the ducting into a support beam to hold the engine box securely in place, while still making it fully removable to aid access when required.
@pippashaw8224
@pippashaw8224 2 жыл бұрын
Rustler Yachts Ltd Thankyou for replying. So do you have a management system for the two alternators to maximise charging?
@Rustler-Yachts
@Rustler-Yachts 2 жыл бұрын
@@pippashaw8224 Yes, Yanmar and Mastervolt worked with our engineers to put in place an integrated charging system that is monitored, regulated and temperature controlled. This yacht has a bank of lithium-ion batteries and the state of their charge/rate discharge, etc is accessible from the dedicated Mastervolt display or on either of the multifunction displays. We usually fit a Nanni diesel, but the owner of this yacht requested a common rail Yanmar engine with twin alternators (something Yanmar hadn't done on this size of engine before) - the owners didn't want a diesel generator or solar, so has opted for the twin alternators and a Watt&Sea hydro generator. This also increased the size of the engine box, and that leads back to the ducting you noticed. If he wants to run the washing machine or needs 240V, he runs the engine and everything is powered from the inverter. We will be covering the full installation in more detail in the future on our website/newsletter.

Quality of workmanship is terrific. But, where is the solar and batteries, radar, & depth sonar? Aft & forward spaces looked congested. I don't like the canoe stern. And where is the second hull, you know, like the 1370 Hull #2 that is being built for you? Yeah, Nick, you've spoiled me with your new Ruby Rose II! Am I forgiven for this review of the Rustler 42? :¬) Webhead USA

Thank you for your kind words. This boat dosen't have (or need) solar (which isn't great for atlantic crossings) her owner has lithium-ion batteries charged by two 160ah alternators (custom fitted by Yanmar) and a Watt&sea hydro generator, Shehas an electric autopilot and a Hydrovane self-steering. She has two multi-function displays (one at the helm the second at the chart table) that link to the mastervolt charging system, radar instruments etc. She also has a raked transom, not a canoe stern.

I went aboard the Rustler 42 and I think a 44 in a previous Southampton Boat show and I was disappointed. Not by the quality but I guess say he interiors are bespoke I didn’t like the way the two boats were laid out. This one is very much a classic layout. These boats owe some of their features to the Rival and Bowman yachts as those companies eventually became part of Rustler. As a Rival owner I love them but if I was to trade up I would find a lovely Chuck Paine designed Bowman 40 or 45 for a fraction of the cost. This is a lot of money for any boat and even if I had that money to spend on a yacht I don’t think the Rustler would be for me. Just my opinion though so don’t hate me…. Andy UK

It's slighly unfair to look at the price of this yacht. Her owner has spent a lot personalising her. She is the first Rustler 42 to sport a carbon rig and Y-boom, she also has a one-off charging and power managment system; developed with Yanmar, Mastervolt and us, she also has a completely custom layout and is equipped for transatlantic cruising. This has all increased her price considerably.

@@Rustler-Yachts No need to be defensive, to be fair I was not looking at the price per se. It is a lot of money, to me anyway, I did not say it was over priced or wasn’t good value, new yachts of any make are out of my league. The interior layout of this one was far more my style than the ones I went aboard at the boat show a few years ago but I get they are bespoke so each to their own.

@@AndyUK-Corrival Thank you for coming to see us. Sorry if our comment came across as defensive. It wasn't our intention at all. We just wanted to explain to anyone reading the comments that this owner had spent A LOT on extras, and that affects the bottom line. As an aside, the owner of this boat owned a Rival 34 previously and we get many people who fall for the feel of heavier displacement yachts, like Rival, and really don't want anything else. As you're aware for a time we built the Bowman 42, but eventually the R42 succeeded her - owners wanted more volume and better performance, while still giving them the benefits of a proper ocean capable cruiser.

You could get a very beautiful cat for $1,000,000 USD. Huge room inside, on deck in a cat and stability that doesn’t till everything onto the floor. It just looks old (lovely for a classical sailboat but this is 2022 rather than 1942). Not a compliment from my point of view. Cat for less than this would have 3 or 4 bedrooms, with ensuite and lots of room in all the bedrooms. Nick, you were born too late for your taste!
