My father used to work in a photographic shop in London in the early 50's. German cameras, Leica and Rollei, were popular and in restricted supply. High prices for German cameras would be paid by London studios and well off amateur photographers. As a young man my father would often get the boat train to Paris, buy a camera to order and bring it back for the customer. There used to be a doccument that had to be signed by a phographic dealer to certify the camera was british owned and being taken overseas, not an import. Of course the shop would fill out these forms for my father to take for return to show at customs. My father also had to put a roll of film though the camera so it was a "used camera", the packaging would also be disposed of. Back then he "owned" a truly amazing camera collection.

Thanks for that story, Richard. It rather backs up Nigel's question about whether people could go abroad, buy cameras and bring them back.

Thank you for a fascinating insight into a bygone age. My late father talked about the micro cord and the Reid stating they were both great cameras.

I think the most collectible British camera of those showed and mentioned, will be the Kennedy Instruments Monobar model type U Camera.

Rather eccentric some of them. Interesting. Mabe you can do one on English lens manufacturers. Not many and rather expensive, but interesting. To me the best box cameras I have used is the zeiss box tengors. In different size formats. Great video.

I found this less than helpful. In my opinion, THESE are not 'classic ' cameras of any sort. I also have a collection of cameras from 1917 to the present and the Brownie Bakelite is the only representative in my collection
