The Flyers win the Stanley Cup....the Flyers win the Stanley Cup...was etched into my then 5 year old brain and hasn't changed since! The following year.... singing We are the Champions on the bus to school... Is another that will forever be there as well. Thanks for posting this. Never seen the full live “real time” original NBC TV broadcast before. Tim Ryan was really good as a play play announcer. In a sense, I think this Flyers despite their Broad Street Bullies reputation was really the first championship hockey team that was a household name in America. So before the Miracle on Ice there was Bobby Hull and the Flyers that helped started the permanent growth in the US.

Miracle on ice or Gretzky did not made hockey popular In the USA! Stanley Cup rating was 4% Nielsen in 1980!Same 4% Nielsen Stanley Cup in 1997! Soviet League goal scoring leaders were in 1980 Shalimov 34 goals Drotzdetzky 31 Varnakov 30 Priodin 27 Lavrentjev 27 they did not played in 1980 olympics! Soviets versus young USA 10-3 3-4 in 1980 and goodwill games 1990 10-3 3-3 and Calgary olympics 7-5 Soviet win! No miracle because Soviets can score 6,8 goals against young USA 1980-1990! Canada have 650000 hockey players! USA have 550000 hockey players! Ovechkin's Russia have only 80000 hockey players! Canada and USA should have 15 guys who have scored over 800 goals like Ovechkin today!!

@@RaineriHakkarainen I don’t understand what the hell you taking about it but you are incorrect. The NHL I agree for a variety reasons will almost a guarantee never become the most popular sport in the USA. For a variety of reasons ie costs of buying equipment etc. With that said, you are wrong. Hockey in the US has come a long way. With franchises in every region of the country especially Tennessee, Florida and Texas which would been laughed at even in the mid 1980s. Not to mention every Stanley Cup Final Game either on one of the Big 4 national over the Air TV Network or a major Sports Network. That is my point.

If there had not been a WHA created in 1972, the Bruins would still have the players that defected to that league. McKenzie, Stanfield, Sanderson and the best money goalie in hockey, Gerry Cheever. On the other hand, the WHA's creation enabled the Flyers to get Bernie Parent back from Toronto. The Flyers ridiculously traded Bernie in 1971. Total lunacy. In all actuality, this series probably would not have even been played as the Flyers would have been eliminated earlier by the Rangers or even the Atlanta Flames. The Flyers won again the next year against Buffalo and have not won a Cup in almost 50 years since.

@@jwvvvv, expansion? Had it not been for the Expansion Draft in 1967, the BIG trade between Boston and Chicago would never have happened. Knowing they'd have lost Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield in that draft, the Hawks included them in that trade, with Phil Esposito. Chicago wanted Pit Martin (who they considered to be an upgrade on Esposito) and Gilles Marotte (a young physical d-man who skated well). They also got goalie Jack Norris.

@@joedeangelis2972 yeah, pretty sneaky by Barber: almost like a distraction from what was just missed. The call against Bobby can sort of be justified because it was a scoring chance: but that only makes sense if the call against Crisp had been made, because we all know Orr could have made a move on goal. And it just crushed the Bruins to lose THE Best player on the ice for the last 2 minutes. Seeing Orr in the box, devastated at being taken off the ice, just compounds the drama of the moment. Bad call, ruined a possible overtime game, maybe a game 7, maybe another cup for a generational talent like Orr. But, at the time, the Flyers were the new, tough, bully boys on the block, and that really appealed to my 11 year old self, haha. Started playing tougher myself. Oh, the 70’s!

They even had the audacity to shove NHL President Clarence Campbell out of the way, so that CLARKE and PARENT could grab the CUP without a formal presentation. This is precisely the reason, why the vast majority of civilized hockey fans, hated and despised both the BRUINS and FLYERS back in the 1970's.
