Classic Buses of the UK-Southend Transport 1999

A film now from the collection of a now departed friend. Having seen my videos taken since 1985 he was inspired to go out and buy his own video camera and get filming. I have been digitising them and converting the Video8 tapes to MP4. This upload shows some of the variety of buses in use at Southend Bus Station in April 1999. Wow, some old stuff kicking around near the end of the century in that town. It could almost pass for 1989 . I was wondering if we'd get to see the pod and still had it's 510 motor no less.

i hate these new lampposts back then they actually had pretty decent ones and it sort of mixes well with the whole concept of the video and the buses

Best years ever working for Southend Transport - even on a grey dreary day with dirty buses the memories came flooding back - Great camaraderie between all the drivers and other staff. Thanks for posting.

Classic. Loved Southend. Leyland Engine Fleetlines still going in 1999 wow!. I remember the mass influx of Leyland Nationals too earlier on. Coincidently,Southend had connections with Cardiff as they loaned Cardiff some Leyland PD3s for a time in the 70s. In turn Cardiff loaned Southend some Olympians in the 80s and ended up with some Cardiff Nationals in the early 90s! Great video mate. Thanks

1999 was, in a way, the best year ever, I think some or a lot of those buses are fortunately still around, preserved at fields.

The NC bodied fleetline with their low height body looked a neat and tidy bus ,I drove Olympians for LT on the 237 for a while not bad .

I drove some of those ex Riverside Olympians after their LT use, they were not as nice as the LT specified ones. I found the brakes to a bit 'all or nothing' which made for interesting driving!!!

The last ones in Sydney were in 1986! Only a few remained for expresses by then out of an original 200 delivered 1970 -1972.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Arriva Southend retired the Fleet lines (which were still in the old Southend Transport livery) in early 2000.
