I suggest you take all the paint back to the gel coat/fibreglass.I had a Plus 2 Elan that had been painted in at least 6 colours and trying to remove a single layer always resulted in going through to other layers.Parts of that car appeared to have been levelled out with some sort of spray filler/putty which was extremely tough.Going through these layers revealed a multitude of bodge repairs to cover stress cracks etc.In my opinion the extra work will be beneficial to your Gilbern in the long term.I have stripped back 4 Lotus cars to gel coat and there are no short cuts.Just do it panel by panel as time permits.Good luck.

Thankyou. Yes I agree. Actually I think the thick grey layer under the paint is indeed some kind of high build putty used to level out the GRP moulding and it is that that has been the main problem on the roof - flaking off and cracking. Also the car has been painted at least twice. The roof is now clear (aside from my 'temporary' blue) but since Nitromors does such a good job of removal down to the naked GRP very likely I'll do the whole thing. But that wont be happening for quite a while yet. I need to test the mechanicals in action first.
