Amen Don! Excellent advice! We are shooting our hobby in the foot with not only rediculous asking prices but, smart assed or belittling the next generation in our replies to posts and driving them away. What good is the hobby if the next generation is chased away, all of us old timers die off and the value goes down because we aren't being good stewards of the hobby! As far as the purchases, I lucked out with my latest '55 210 Del Ray purchase! Rollers were cheaper last year and were all over! When I finally pulled the trigger on building my second gasser at the beginning of 2022, the inventory dried up and the few out there doubled in price! I found a very fair deal but, I had to drive 2500 miles round trip to get it! The deciding factor was I had family in that state I got to spend time with, gas hadn't started climbing yet and it came with a complete and original 210 4 door sedan with a 6 cyl/3 on the tree! The price I paid was fair for the Del Ray alone! I am going to use the 4 door for learning to weld/page content and do body panel/cancer repair. Thanks for posting this and doing a great job in keeping these cars and our great hobby alive! Best wishes to you Don!

Hey Hubie! Yeah man its up to us to keep the cool old hobby alive and we need to help the young kids get into it! Most people are only concerned with there own capital gain! I see way to often a car bought at a fair price them turned right back around and put up.for sale for double the price! Most young kids would love to have a 57 Chevy but the prices run them off. He would could only remember back when we was young none of us had much money! It'll be interesting to see what the next 20 years brings for the classic cars! You did really good finding your 55 Delray! Thats a tough car to find and even harder to find it at a good price! Catch you next time 👍

@@donshotrodgarage1717 I fully agree Don! I wanted a Tri Five so bad as a kid that my Dad wanted to give me his '55 Hardtop. I told him I didn't want to take his car, that I would go buy my own. He helped me mow lawns that summer and we made $1300. I found a Bel Air Sedan for $1800, he loaned me the extra $500 and I had my first Tri Five at age 15. Hopefully, the next generations are just as excited about the hobby as we were! Saving the inventory we got and keeping the prices reachable for these kids will help! Now if we could just get autoshop back into them high schools........🤔

Hey Don , real good and truthful video . Still really like your idea for that 2 dr sedan . Look at it like it is therapy , not like your going to end up needing therapy .Very important to have encouraging people to speak to . How many people have you met that can tell you all about how to do whatever ... but what do they have to show for it . Talk is cheap ... maybe one day they will back up there words. Great to be able to speak to you again . Tomorrow I'll be the same age to the day , Lori's big brother was when passed away from covid . Had so many things he was looking forward to doing . Even Lori's oldest sister was looking forward to speaking to him about 4 wheel drive offroading with her truck in the mountains but ... never got the chance . When I read your reply I'll be on break in a major hospital where things are getting better and the province is opening up more . Again must stress the importance of a great team and getting by one day at a time . Keep positive , try to laugh , keep moving ,just like that '57 Nomad . What a great car but them again they all are . Have a great day Don ! Sure like that 2 door post '55 !

Interesting comments. When I started out on the tri fives there were still many cars in the junkyards You could even find them at gas stations sitting out back after being picked over for parts. . I used to go out in the woods to get parts from abandoned 55-57 Chevys. Now I see cars being dragged out of storage and out of places where they were dumped years ago. They even re-pop certain 55-57 Chevy bodies.It is still a very good hobby after 45 years for me.

A little work here an there an an some parts added to it an its on its way to being road worthy again. Yea, 500 would have been better but i would have still saved it from the junk yard for sure. The main thing is your living hour dreams. An that's all that matters. Keep on keeping on. Don what you said is true , think about what you can do yourself B4 buying a major project . the cost of the car and the cost of the parts to make the car what you want it to be when it is finished. they can eat up a bunch of money if you dont shop wisely . get your parts together before you start so the things you forgot dont slow you down much. i have a bunch of cool old projects and most of the major parts to build them. so i try to do something everyday even if its not a lot. take care man

In 1978 I bought five 55 chevies for 500.oo , I made 3 out of them , kept one and sold the rest . One guy bought one and tore it apart to redo it . Last month I bought it back. It still has 68,000 miles on it , three holes the size of a quarter and its a 2dr hdt. I sold it for 500 and after all these years of sitting in his garage I payed 2000.oo . Its blue and white with white interior. And comes with a 396 4spd and nine inch rear , same as I sold it . Im lucky but most guys pay too much for junk , get started and loose interest, then sell . I have one other one I've owned since 81, its a gasser , hdt . I payed 400. For it . Runs a 55 truck axle , 69 dz 302 with cross ram and 4 spd , being old has some advantages lol !

Prices will come down during extreme inflation, high energy costs, because it causes poverty. Last time we had a staged energy shock like this, an acquaintance was offering us his numbers matching 70 Hemi Cuda stick car for $3800, and ended up selling it to a stranger for $5500, in 1980. Gold price spiked and we were selling our high school class rings for more than we paid for them early in the school year. Cars don't mean shit when energy becomes exceedingly expensive, there is poverty. When energy is cheap, there is prosperity. That's all there is to this modern economy. It's all based on cheap oil, and fiat printed currency backed by nothing, lent out at low rates but compounded interest, to the masses. I'm already seeing project cars being sold on Ebay for low prices now. You may think tri-5 cars are all the rage now, in 20 years nobody is even going to be allowed to drive them without a very expensive emissions permit, or even start them in the driveway, if at all. the political forces in power now, want the internal combustion engine outlawed altogether, and banned. these old cars are going to become garage and yard art.

@@donshotrodgarage1717hey Don, I'm 28 and working on a 55 Chevy belair 2 door hardtop I paid for 27k after taxes previous owner paid 31k after taxes about a year ago, he showed me the bill of sale, but I hadnt watched your video and I feel like I got burnt on the price, had a 10 footer paint job, but it's rusted under the carpet and just about everywhere, had some rot in the driver and passenger side which I cut out and have been trying to grind out the rest of the rust down to bare metal from the floors and doors myself but don't know how to spot weld, dime sized holes throughout, the trims all look chrome but have dings here and there, found an 8 inch square cut in the trunk area which I imagine was rot, and por15 althroughout the bottom of the car the only thing it has going for it is a fresh rebuilt 350 V8 with Edelbrock aluminum intake, Holley 4 barrel carburetor, HEI distributor, aluminum radiator, recent Chrome brake master and booster for the front power disc brakes, and power steering, Turbo 350 automatic transmission and rams horn exhaust manifolds with dual flow masters, has all the windows, and it was a local car, doors were not shutting properly but I got that fixed, driver door still not aligned and as I was trying to fix that the rust around the bolt broke the screw....not sure if i got terribly or slightly burnt on this car. Maybe you would have the answer, just been feeling down in the dumps with my first classic car 😔 10:44 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIGXd4qFacxmd6Msi=Ml5coYHFM_qKXByy this is my car, guy bought it from them paid 31 a year ago sold it to me for 27 and wouldn't budge any lower a month ago I can do most of the work on it except welding and upholstery. What are your thoughts?

@adimart2214 I watched the video of your 55 Chevy. I would say that was a fair price for the car. It's very very tough to find a rustfree 55 chevy anywhere. And when you do they'll ask 25k for the car all tore apart! Get you a 110 mig welder and start practicing welds on old spare metal. Be very careful to pull your car to far apart while you're working on it Your car will always be worth what you paid for it as long as you don't tear it all apart! Don't be bummed out about it That's a nice looking 55 chevy! Have a good one Buddy 👍

Really great advice Don, I've had the same love for old Chevy's since I was a kid. I have such good memories of going to look for Chevy projects with my dad when he was alive, sure miss him and being on the hunt for these cars. Take care friend, thanks for the great video 👍

Hey Buddy! Yeah man that is awesome! I don't know if a dad truly knows how much that affect us growing up! I know for sure I loved the time I spent with my dad when I was young! He's been gone for 20 years now and it still seems like just yesterday we was hunting cars! Catch you next time 👍

Yes good advice. Used to be back in the day if a car got in a wreck and the frame got bent. It was considered totalled. My 55 wagon cost me $150. and I bought a 4 door at the same estate auction for $130 and fixed the wagon. Not really a finished vehicle. However it runs drives and stops. has enough wiring to start it and charge the battery. I was offered 65 one hundred dollar bills for it. Told the guy I bought it cheep enough that I can afford to keep it. I think I could easily sell it for Ten Thousand. Plenty of ready willing and able buyers for any tri five 2 door. My 8 year old Grandson tells anyone who ask about it. That 55 is mine I am gonna fix it up someday. Now we also have a 55 Ford 2 dr Ranch Wagon. Hardly ever does anyone ever ask about buying it.

Great comment man! I love it I bought it cheap enough to keep it! Im like you ive always had to fix them up! Never had the cash to buy a nice one! Plus i just like to fix uo the cars most people walk by! That is strange you don't get much interest in the 55 ford wagon! Catch you next time 👍 Take care of that 8 year old hes living the dream👍

Excellent advice! As you stated, prices for parts, paint, and labor have become astronomical (personal skill sets are a major plus). Owning and driving a classic is wonderful experience, but a guy must carefully count the cost and the car's future market potential before he wades out too deep in Restoration River!

Hey Roger! Yeah man everything a car needs from start to finish is exspensive! It's a really cool hobby to get into you just need to be careful! If its done right you can always say you built that car and that is something to really be proud of! Have a good one Buddy 👍

Good advice Don. I wish you could buy tri-fives as reasonable as you could in the 60s and 70s. I’d be a millionaire if I had stocked up back then and stored them to sell now. You have saved some fine tri fives. I know you won’t give up on this 55 Belair.

Yeah you definitely have to have some kind of skill and tools to make it happen. I had a little more skill doing my second 55. I was 20 years old when I did my first one. Now I'm 66 now and I've learned a thing or two and have a few more tools.

Tell Don tell it! What ever the car or truck is, get it road worthy and driving. If you Candice it it will help you stay motivated. You can fix the body up and upholstery but get it so you can take it for a drive. Not driving well it gets junk stacked on it so high you will forget there is a car under the crap.If you don't know how to pull a transmission get on you tube and learn. Good stuff Don. I don't think your 55 is junk . Sand it and primered people will be knocking on your door wanting to hand you cash. Hang in there Don

Thanks for the tips Don! There are some points where I can't take it and now you're giving us realistic points of view when it comes to classic project cars. I'm just fanatical about that 55 sedan sitting at your work. I don't consider it a piece of junk. I know it took you a 1000 dollars to get it but I know there are 67 68 fastback Mustangs in slightly better condition than your 55 right here that are going for 10,000 dollars !!!! So, no, I don't think you overpaid for that 55! I see it as a diamond in the rough that its excellent for a budget minded good running 55 gasser! I know most people won't look at it that way because they're not that dedicated as you and I are about these tri-5s. Thanks again for the tips in this video, I can only be a spectator enthusiast about these cars for now. Its still my dream to have a car just like the one sitting at your work👍🏁 See you at your next video!

Hey Raymond! Im glad you like the video! I agree I see some cars for sale and think of what it would take to get them running and driving plus the purchase price! It's insane to think about and can be overwhelming! Research and study the market around where you live, no where else! You will find the car yoir looking for at a reasonable price! I'm happy with the 55 Chevy and it is exactly what i was looking for! At the end of the day my biggest interest in the younger generation they are our future! Catch you next time 👍

don i have a 265 that i'm putting in a '60 vette{building stock 2bbl motor}./ one problem i 'm running into is the cam shaft.melling #ccs_1 .it is not available. it has a groove cut in it on the rear bearing lobe.can't find one any where. summitt and jegs say they can get it but i talked t melling directly and they said they have none nor do they plan on building any. other info i have found is that you are supposed to use a 57 rear cam bearing instead of the org 55 cambearing. is it possible to use another sb cam and have a machine shop cut agroove in it . if so how do you the proper location and size of groove. i building with very limited budget. greatly appreciate your help or opinon??????
@donshotrodgarage1717
@donshotrodgarage1717 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Janet! What year is your 265 engine? 1955 and 1956 265 engines have a slot in the rear cam journal! Any machine shop can machine the groove into the rear cam bearing lope! You cannot use the 57 rear cam bearing without modifying your block on the back cam bearing housing!! Easiest thing to do is buy a camshaft and have your local machine shop machine the groove on the back cam bearing lope! Do you have the cam shaft out of your engine? Catch you next time 👍Let me know if you need more info on this.
